It feels like this could be Argentina's year, and expect bjg win today. They've not played many European teams on this long unbeaten run... just Italy and Estonia. Will they collapse again like the France game in 2018 and Germany in 2010?

Both of these countries will be used to the heat, but I was watching the games yesterday, which all kicked off later, and by the 65-70th minute the players were looking tired. It can be a factor.

Tenacious tackling by Saud Abdulhamid as he pressures Papu Gomez by the corner flag. In the end he has to give away a corner and that prompts a huge roar from the Argentina fans.

Lionel Messi sends the ball in but the defence clears.

Saudi Arabia aren't going to make it easy and that is what the manager will have said to them. They are going to put their tackles in.

Abdulelah Al Malki and Lautaro Martinez both slide in for a 50-50. Al Malki gets a talking to from the referee for his part in that but it was just a coming together.

    Two huge cheers.

One from the Argentine fans in expectation as Lionel Messi steadies himself 10 yards out from goal and then one from the Saudi fans as goalkeeper Mohammed Al Owais beats his effort away.

It is a great save. I was shouting goal.

He just didn't get enough bend on it, but that will give the goalkeeper confidence.

That is a brilliant save, it was a really well worked move by Argentina.

  9. GREAT SAVE!published at 2 mins

    Argentina 0-0 Saudi Arabia

Just over a minute on the clock and Lionel Messi has a huge chance!

He should score really as Angel di Maria's cross from the right is closed down but the ball spills out to Messi, whose first-time shot is low but well saved by the goalkeeper. Great save.

Argentina have four players aged 34+ in their starting line up - the first team in World Cup history to do so. Will that experience be key?

Several of the teams nowhere near the standard of a World Cup. Iran and Qatar looked like semi pro teams. Expect Argentina to hammer Saudi Arabia whilst several European sides sit at home and would’ve made the tourney so much better. FIFA’s decision to increase to 48 teams for next tourney but only add 3 Europeans will make it worse

Saudi Arabia won't want to go two or three down early because it could become a rout and and become six or seven.

The teams are out and what a noise!

An incredible sound. Both anthems sung with real gusto.

Have to say I don't get the hype around Argentina at this tournament. Messi is clearly the GOAT, granted, but the squad outside of him is pretty thin and has nowhere near the depth of Brazil, France, England etc.

  16. 'Argentina's defence would concern me as the tournament progresses'published at 09:56 Greenwich Mean Time 22 November 2022

My concern for Argentina, as we get into the business end, would be the defensive end. Their stats are excellent, it is something like two goals conceded in the last 15 games.

Aston Villa's Emi Martinez and Tottenham's Cristian Romero came into the side together last June and they've really improved the backline.

I wonder about Nicolas Otamendi at this stage of his career. I am sure he'll pick up a suspension at some stage and Lisandro Martínez of Manchester United will get to play at some stage.

I don't think there will be a sports scientist in the Argentina camp who can tell Lionel Messi about what to do. He'll know what his body needs.

It is a special game for him, a special World Cup for him and he'll feel he can lift with the team he's got around him.

  19. 'Argentina are now Messi's number one priority'published at 09:55 Greenwich Mean Time 22 November 2022

    Tim Vickery

Over the last four years, from the time that Messi started to fall out from Barcelona, Argentina has been his number one priority. I don't think it ever really had been before.

That goes back to legacy and winning the World Cup and I really do think this is their best chance.

I do think Argentina will go deep.

The manager hasn't put pressure on them, but there will be pressure on them.

With the squad they have, they can get to the final.
