Where would Manchester United be without 37-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo?

Of the 12 goals United have scored in the last two months, Ronaldo has got nine of them, including hat-tricks against Tottenham and Norwich.

Bruno Fernandes' goal in the 3-0 win against Brentford on Monday was his first in 11 matches. Marcus Rashford (out today as he has bronchitis) has no goals in 15 games, Edinson Cavani is on a nine-game run without scoring, while Jadon Sancho has one goal in 12 matches.

Therefore, it's no surprise interim boss Ralf Rangnick earlier this week said it was "obvious", the club needed to sign two "modern" strikers "who give this team more quality and more options".

He expanded on that in his news conference on Friday, unhappy United failed to strengthen in January. United are set to lose Cavani, Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata and Nemanja Matic all on free transfers, Mason Greenwood is currently unavailable and they also loaned out Anthony Martial and Donny van de Beek.

"We should have at least tried in those [final] 48 hours [of the transfer window]," said Rangnick. The German mentioned Luis Diaz, Dusan Vlahovic and Julien Alvarez, who joined Liverpool, Juventus and Manchester City respectively in the last three days of January, as players they could have gone after.

Seeing how Diaz transformed Liverpool's Champions League semi-final second leg against Villarreal on Tuesday, United fans will be wondering the impact he could have had on their season if he had joined the red of United instead of the red of Liverpool.

The sun is out at Turf Moor and there is cricket taking place right next door.

Burnley are hosting Bacup in the Lancashire League second XI.

Villa fans who arrived early in east Lancashire have been enjoying the cricket club's facilities and the beer has been flowing since about midday.

A wicket has just been taken and that sparked a mini pitch invasion.

Burnley and Villa fans are mingling together and are in high spirits ahead of what is a huge match for the hosts.

  12. Great expectations, but the reality disappointspublished at 13:38 British Summer Time 7 May 2022

Brighton v Manchester United (17:30 BST)

    Michael Emons
BBC Sport at the Amex Stadium

While some teams have as many as five Premier League games still to play, today is Manchester United's penultimate match of the season and Ralf Rangnick's second from last match in charge before Erik ten Hag takes over.

The season promised so much for United fans when, under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, they spent almost £120m in the summer on World Cup-winning defender Raphael Varane, England forward Jadon Sancho and five-time Ballon d'Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo.

But instead of a title push, United have arguably been the biggest under-achievers in this season’s Premier League. Solskjaer was sacked in November, Michael Carrick had three games as caretaker boss, before Ralf Rangnick came in as 'interim' manager from December onwards - but, with no help from the board in the transfer window, the gamble has failed badly.

If they don't win at Brighton today it will be confirmation they will have failed to qualify for the Champions League - for only the fifth time in 30 seasons.

However, a United win may only be delaying the inevitable anyway as their top-four hopes will end if Tottenham (with a far superior goal difference) beat Liverpool at Anfield in the later game or if Arsenal (who still have to play Spurs) avoid defeat at home to Leeds tomorrow.

Rangnick will be hoping to end the season strongly, but his team face a revitalised Brighton side who have beaten Arsenal, Tottenham and Wolves all in the last month.

Having helped relegate Norwich last week, Aston Villa can deliver a hammer blow to Burnley's chances of staying up.

But they are meeting a Clarets side brimming with confidence after a remarkable three-match winning run under caretaker boss Mike Jackson.

Burnley looked down and out when they sacked the popular Sean Dyche three weeks ago but 10 points out of 12 has catapulted them out of the relegation zone, and they start their penultimate home game with a two-point safety cushion.

This is the first of two meetings between the sides in a short space of time.

Another win today and the Clarets will hope to be all but safe by the time they visit Villa Park in 12 days time.

    Hello!

We're very much at the business end of the season with, so far, only one thing confirmed - that Norwich will be playing Championship football season.

Watford, though, are on the verge of joining them and need an incredible turnaround in form to pull off a great escape, much like Burnley have managed although the Clarets cannot rest easy yet.

Both those sides are in action at 15:00 BST along with Chelsea, who are looking to recover from their recent mini-slump and get a top four spot wrapped up.

  16. Tense at both ends of the tablepublished at 13:28 British Summer Time 7 May 2022

Title chase, top four spots and Premier League survival - with a handful of games left there is plenty still to play for in all areas of the Premier League table.

Liverpool are likely going to need a faultless run in their remaining four league games to have a chance of usurping Manchester City at the top and they've got a potentially tricky game with Tottenham at Anfield this evening.

But before all that it is the fight to finish in the Champions League places and to simply stay in the division that we focus on.
