  1. 'Arsenal lacking leaders'published at 15:36 British Summer Time 22 May 2022

    Dion Dublin
Former Premier League striker on Football Focus

Inconsistency has let Arsenal down. Mikel Arteta has set a few boundaries at the club but they are still lacking leaders at the club. He is on his own at the moment, he needs a bit more quality.

  2. Arsenal don't have squad depth to finish in top four - Warnockpublished at 15:36 British Summer Time 22 May 2022

    Arsenal v Everton (16:00 BST)

If Arsenal manage to qualify for next season's Champions League they'll be "ahead of schedule", according to former Premier League defender Stephen Warnock.

"What you see with Arsenal is the squad depth isn't there," Warnock told BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast.

"All fit, the first XI is decent, it's a good team, but to consistently have that over a 38-game period their squad isn't big enough and doesn't have enough quality in it.

"They made a lot of additions to the squad at the start of the season but they need more.

"I think if they got into the Champions League Mikel Arteta would've said they were ahead of schedule.

"It does bode well for the future - they'll learn from this experience, they'll get better.

"But they need to improve and Mikel Arteta will have to go back to the board and ask for more help."

    • Arsenal have lost their past three Premier League games against Everton, as many as they had in their previous 26 (W16 D7). Only once have they lost four in a row against the Toffees in league competition, doing so between November 1922 and April 1924.
    • Everton won this fixture last season, ending a 24-game winless run away against Arsenal in the league. They last won consecutive league visits against the Gunners in March 1987.
    • This is the third time Arsenal and Everton have met on the final day of a Premier League season, with the Gunners winning the previous two – 4-3 in 2001-02 and 3-1 in 2016-17.
    • Arsenal are unbeaten in their final league game in each of the last 16 seasons (W14 D2), winning the last 10 in a row. When finishing a league season at home, the Gunners have won each of their past 12 games since a 3-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in 1992-93.
  4. Everton going 'full pelt' for resultpublished at 15:33 British Summer Time 22 May 2022

    Arsenal v Everton (16:00 BST)

It's a glorious summer's day in north London, but both teams will look back on their previous games with a mixture of relief and regret.

Everton's heroics against Crystal Palace on Thursday secured their Premier League status, meaning they can relax a touch, although Frank Lampard says they will be going "full pelt" given what's at stake for Arsenal's top four hopes.

Mikel Arteta's side will rue their costly defeat at Newcastle which has put Tottenham in the driving seat for a Champions League spot. If they miss out, it would be a sixth consecutive season they have not made Europe's elite competition after 19 years of taking on the big guns.

  7. Leeds & Burnley want Everton to be told not to delete datapublished at 15:31 British Summer Time 22 May 2022

Everton's win over Crystal Palace secured their Premier League safety on Thursday, leaving Burnley and Leeds to battle it out against the drop. But that might not be the end of it, if the Clarets and Whites have their way.

The two clubs are stepping up their attempts to get Everton's financial accounts independently investigated.

Both have written to the league about the Toffees' latest accounts, which show losses of £120.9m for 2020-21.

Everton have posted losses of £372m over the past three years.

League profitability and sustainability rules allow for losses of £105m over a three-year period but Everton say Covid-19 losses over the past two seasons amount to £170m, which can be deducted from their total.

That figure has caused surprise among some Premier League teams because it dwarfs clubs of a similar size.

Earlier this week, Newcastle posted Covid-19 losses of £40m over the past two seasons, while Aston Villa said theirs amounted to £56m.

Burnley are in their sixth successive season in the Premier League - their longest spell of top-flight football since a 24-year run that went through the fifties and sixties - but will they still be in the top tier at 6pm?

It's been a tough season for Clarets fans. They didn't win in their first nine league games, then did even worse with an 11-game winless spell not long afterwards.

Owner and chairman Alan Pace then took a huge gamble by sacking manager Sean Dyche, who had worked wonders in a nine-year spell at the club, with only eight games of the season left.

Mike Jackson was bumped up from under-23s coach to interim boss and it's hard to see what more he could've done as wins over Southampton, Wolves and Watford as well as draws at West Ham and Aston Villa have kept their fate in their own hands.

Win today and Burnley slam the trapdoor shut. Anything less than three points and it all depends on what happens 180 miles away and the Clarets will be down if Leeds, away at Brentford, get a better result than Burnley manage against Newcastle.

It promises to be a nail-biting, tense afternoon in Lancashire but will it be celebration or sadness at Turf Moor later on?

  10. 'I don't see Leeds getting anything'published at 15:27 British Summer Time 22 May 2022

    Brentford v Leeds (16:00 BST)

    Andy Reid
Ex-Republic of Ireland midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

I don’t see Leeds getting anything at Brentford. The Bees have had a really good season and will probably want to put on a bit of a show for the fans.

All the pressure’s on Leeds. It’s a tough game for Burnley at home to Newcastle, but I don’t see Leeds getting what they need.

  11. 'We need to be aggressive'published at 15:26 British Summer Time 22 May 2022

    Brentford v Leeds (16:00 BST)

    Leeds United

Leeds boss Jesse Marsch speaking to Sky Sports:

"We'll check [the Burnley score] at half-time, we have to focus on ourselves in the first half and then as the second half progresses we will know the situation for us but the best thing we can do is get three points on the pitch.

"We will be aggressive form the start - we came to win but we need to keep things tight and not give them chances, they are dangerous from set pieces so we have to manage that. We have to focus on our performance.

"Patrick [Bamford] was fit and ready to go and then two days ago tested positive and has been too sick to get out of bed - it's unfortunate for him and us. Sam [Greenwood] has been great and I think he is ready for this moment, no one in the team is surprised and we expect him to be ready. Its a bit early for Tyler [Roberts] it was touch and go whether he's 100% fit, but Tyler feels good and if we need him in an emergency situation at the end of the match he is available.

"We need to be aggressive, we know they have some power up front, [Christian] Eriksen has made an incredible change in their team so we have to manage him but it's about a team, complete performance from us. Be aggressive, we need to have a great performance."

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola wanted fans out on the streets for his team as they pursue the win that will give them the Premier League title and they came to give them a rousing welcome at Etihad Stadium.

And he wants it continue inside. The final line of his programme notes?

The Premier League title has been decided in the final matchround on eight occasions.

  15. 'Holiday can help Leicester'published at 15:21 British Summer Time 22 May 2022

    Leicester v Southampton (16:00 BST)

    Leicester City

Brendan Rodgers is hoping the “holiday” of only playing one game a week next season will help Leicester challenge for a top-four place again.

The Foxes have challenged for the Champions League until the final day in the previous two seasons but have nothing but pride to play for against Southampton today.

"I’ve always said that one game a week is a holiday: but let’s make it a good holiday and we can be up there again.

"The last couple of years have been great for Leicester. The assessment of us is that we’re a team up there challenging for Champions League qualification and for trophies, which is brilliant."

Both of these sides have had good seasons, but especially West Ham. David Moyes' side seem to give everyone a good game - with leaders Manchester City the latest example last weekend.

As I've been saying all season, the Hammers do not have the biggest squad but it looks like they only need a couple of additions in order to challenge properly for the Champions League spots next time.

Brighton are not quite at that level but they are still trying to beat their best league finish, which was 13th in the top flight in 1981-82. I think they'll do it.

    Lawro's prediction: 1-1

Ralph Hasenhuttl said Southampton’s Premier League season petering out is "very disappointing".

He has noted a worrying pattern with the campaigns under his management and intends to address it.

"We achieved our minimum target of staying in the Premier League very early as we always do but then our last results have not been that great.

"We’ve seen how tough the league is but it’s very disappointing where we are finishing.

"It’s been an exhausting season for us to perform at the highest level and it has cost our guys a lot of energy.

"It seems we cannot hold this level high until the end of the season and we need to strengthen that so we can end up better than the last two seasons."

Crystal Palace v Man Utd (16:00 BST)

    Andy Reid
Ex-Republic of Ireland midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

If I was Erik ten Hag, I’d really be looking forward to playing in Europe with United next season. It gives you a great opportunity to try things, get more games in and really imprint his philosophy.

You get a chance to build. Players like James Garner, for example, could really benefit from getting experience in Europe with United next season. In terms of Europe, next season is almost an experimental year for them.

  20. Can West Ham get first PL win over Brighton?published at 15:16 British Summer Time 22 May 2022

Brighton v West Ham (16:00 BST)

Brighton are unbeaten in all nine of their Premier League meetings with West Ham (W3 D6). That is a Premier League club record without defeat/victory for both sides.

The past six Premier League meetings have been drawn. In English top-flight history, only three fixtures have been drawn seven times in a row - Chelsea v West Brom (1921-24), Aston Villa v West Ham (1998-2001) and Birmingham v Liverpool (2005-10).

The last time West Ham beat Brighton, it was by a 6-0 scoreline, in the Championship in 2012.
