  1. Frank reveals tactic to convince Eriksen to stay at Brentfordpublished at 14:57 British Summer Time 22 May 2022

Thomas Frank has revealed he gives Christian Eriksen "a hug and a kiss every day" to try to convince the Denmark midfielder to stay at Brentford.

The 30-year-old has been a revelation since his January move on a short-term deal and will have no shortage of suitors in the summer.

Frank says he is relaxed about Eriksen's future, but is longing for him to sign a more permanent contract in west London.

"I am convinced there is a good chance he could be wearing a Bees shirt next season," he said.

"It's been a win-win for us and for him. He helped the team, gave something to the fans and it helped him back into football.

"I am telling him that we are as ambitious as he is and he can continue to make a big impact.

"I give him a hug and a kiss every day - although I'm not sure if that's going to work!"

Christian Eriksen has made a huge impact in the short space of time he has been at Brentford this season.

But the midfielder is out of contract in the summer and not certain of where he will be in the new campaign.

In this BBC interview he also says suffering a cardiac arrest at last year's European Championship changed his "perspective" on life and family.

It is a beautiful day in west London.

But dark clouds are gathering around Leeds United.

They must do better than Burnley this afternoon, otherwise, their much-heralded return to the Premier League will be brought to an abrupt halt after only two seasons.

This is going to be a nervy one.

John Calvert (left) and Ian Horsfall have both followed Burnley for more than 50 years. The ‘Proudsville’ Clarets is a reference to a legendary quote from former boss Sean Dyche after a 1-0 win over Stoke in December 2017 left the Clarets fourth in the Premier League and Dyche said he was ‘prouder than the proudest man in Proudsville’

If Burnley were to be relegated today they would take a massive financial hit. In their accounts released earlier this month, the club confirmed ‘a significant proportion’ of a £65m loan taken out with American financiers MSD Holdings to complete ALK Capital’s takeover of the club in 2020 would have to be paid back ‘shortly’ after the end of the season, should the Clarets be relegated from the top flight.

"I feel this is the biggest game for Burnley since 1987," said lifelong Clarets fan Ian Horsfall. "It was the last game of the season in the old Fourth Division and we beat Leyton Orient 2-1 and Lincoln lost and they dropped out of the Football League.

"If we had not won that game everyone thinks we would've gone out of existence. This is massive today, the biggest game since then, bigger than the [Championship] play-off final.

"We don't know what they've done to finance the [takeover] deal and if we do get relegated it feels like we would be selling players to survive."

"We would definitely lose some of our players," added season-ticket holder John Calvert. "Nick Pope would go as he wants to play for England in the World Cup, Maxwel Cornet, James Tarkowski, Nathan Collins we would struggle to keep them.

"There's definitely a lot of nerves, it's a very nervy game and anything could happen. But the team have been playing well and the squad are playing for Mike Jackson and if we play to our best we have every chance."

Brentford are assured of their highest league finish since 1938 and could secure a place in the top 10 if other Premier League results go their way today.

Manager Thomas Frank knows attention is not focussed on his side today. But in his programme notes warned Leeds not to expect an easy time.

"We have had some brilliant battles with Leeds United during my time here and I'm sure today will be no different," he said.

"It's a big game for them - everyone knows that - but we have our own ambitions. We are determined to finish as high as possible."

In the immediate term - and right now that is all that matters - Leeds United head coach Jesse Marsch has to better Burnley's result on Sunday, when the Whites visit Brentford. His focus is now singular without Everton in the relegation mix.

"The fact we only have one match to keep track of, and that we have to out-point Burnley, I think it does make it very clear for us. A win gives us the best opportunity. We’re clear with exactly what we want the game to look like, and what the opponent is. That’s what’s most important."

There has been a bit of needle in recent times between the two clubs with regards both sets of players and particularly Bees boss Thomas Frank. All that was before Marsch's arrival at Elland Road, but can he put the rivalry to his use?

"At this point, we don’t need any extra motivation. We need to expect that Brentford will be at their absolute best, and that’s what we will do."

United's best may not be good enough when the final reckoning comes. But looking beyond the final whistle at Brentford Community Stadium, Marsch is not for leaving should the club drop into the Championship.

"When we talked about coming, this was about a long-term project and I am thankful the club committed to me in that way," said the American.

As for the club itself, with the conversations he had with the owners, he believes "we’re very secure and able to move forward in a positive direction".

Any celebration or inquest can wait until 6pm on Sunday. Before then, it's time for a hero. Patrick Bamford to secure survival as a super sub with another added-time goal, anyone?

Jesse Marsch is hopeful key striker Patrick Bamford will be fit enough to play some part in Sunday's game at Brentford.

Leeds must beat the Bees and hope Burnley do not match their result against Newcastle in order to avoid relegation from the Premier League.

The England striker has been out since mid-March with a foot injury.

"Bamford has looked really good this week," said Marsch. "I've not made a decision on Sunday yet. He had a day off on Friday, we can make a decision in the next couple of days.

"He has looked good all week. He feels better than he did and we will prepare him the best way we can for as many minutes as possible."

Marsch said he has "not gone through those scenarios" regarding players leaving if Leeds are relegated.

He added: "I am very aware the best chance to keep the group together is staying up. I would hate to see some of the guys go. A big part of my motivation is to continue the relationships I have."

You don't have to look too hard to see why Burnley's Premier League future is in doubt. Only bottom-of-the-table and already-relegated Norwich have scored fewer goals than the Clarets' 33 in 37 games.

Burnley's joint second highest league scorer this season is Chris Wood, with only three, and he was sold for £25m to today's opponents Newcastle in January.

His replacement, Netherlands international Wout Weghorst, has only scored twice in 19 matches, while Wood himself has only netted two in 16 for the Magpies.

Wood missed Monday's win over Arsenal because of a hip injury but was expected to train on Saturday and Burnley fans will be all too aware of the threat the New Zealand striker poses after his 49 Premier League goals in his four-and-a-half seasons at Turf Moor.

  15. Marsch 'still planning' to be at Leeds next seasonpublished at 14:40 British Summer Time 22 May 2022

    Brentford v Leeds (16:00 BST)

    Leeds United

Leeds manager Jesse Marsch says he expects to be in charge of the club next season, even if they are relegated from the Premier League.

His side occupy the final relegation spot going into Sunday's game at Brentford, level on points with Burnley but with an inferior goal difference.

Marsch replaced Marcelo Bielsa as Leeds boss in February but they have won just three games under him.

"I'm still planning to be here even in relegation," said the American, 48.

"It's a long-term project and the club committed to me in that way. The connections we have made mesh well together.

"The support from everyone has been amazing, but I'm not thinking about the long-term project, only about Sunday and preparing for that."

After a fantastic point at Aston Villa, it's in our hands heading into the match against Newcastle. The nerves heading into the final game are unbearable and I can’t wait for the season to be over.

Nick Pope was the outstanding performer - again - at Villa Park, so will he end the season with another impressive performance?

I can’t see us getting any more than a point against Newcastle. However, I also can’t see Leeds getting more than a point at Brentford. And going off that, we would stay up for another season in the Premier League.

Survival would be huge for us for many reasons, but it’s going to be a very nervy few hours on Sunday afternoon. If we succeed, the scenes after the game will be breathtaking.

    • Burnley have lost each of their past three Premier League meetings with Newcastle, having been beaten in just two of their first eight against them (W2 D4).
    • The Magpies are looking to win four consecutive Premier League games against an opponent for the first time since doing so against QPR between 2012 and 2014.
    • In Premier League history there have been 44 red cards issued in teams’ final games of the season – Newcastle have received more of these than any other side (7). Their most recent came in 2015-16, when Aleksandar Mitrovic was sent off in a 5-1 victory over Tottenham.
    • The Clarets have lost their final league game in each of the past five Premier League campaigns since their return to the division in 2016, having won on matchday 38 in the two seasons they were relegated (4-2 v Tottenham in 2009-10, 1-0 v Aston Villa in 2014-15).

Mike Jackson said that "everyone is all in" as his side prepare to take on Newcastle in Sunday's crucial final game of the season at Turf Moor.

The Clarets sit level on points with Leeds, but are ahead on goal difference, and must better the Whites' result to survive the drop.

"Every game we have had we have said we must get something out of it and the lads have been delivering," said Jackson.

"They're used to being around that pressure and we have to use it as a bit of a fire inside us."

The Burnley boss, who took over from Sean Dyche in April, said that Sunday will be "emotional" and that the players must "try and take that out of it".

With a place in the Premier League on the line, that could be easier said than done.

But Jackson said he thinks his side perform better "on the edge" and praised their display to draw at Aston Villa on Thursday, adding that they didn't get enough credit for the stellar performance at Villa Park.

"No matter what happened last night, we would have to get something out of Sunday. They have to take the noise out of it," he said.

    Burnley v Newcastle (16:00 BST)

Natalie Bromley, No Nay Never, external

If you had asked any Burnley fan after the defeat by Brentford whether we would be going into the final game of the season with our destiny in our own hands, we would have laughed at you... and taken it, obviously!

The Clarets have been immense over the past few weeks. We took decisive managerial decisions, the players stepped up and the fans got behind them.

I am very proud of our performance at Aston Villa on Thursday. This was a side who were ruthless in their victory just two weeks ago at Turf Moor, and who were a much stronger threat than us on the night.

But the Clarets found a way - as they have done time and time again. I am still angry about three key decisions that went against us, but they are for another day.

For now, we look ahead to a horribly massive game at Turf Moor on Sunday. Everything seems to look in our favour: we are at home, we have the goal difference advantage, we have the form, we have Nick Pope.

But football is also horribly cruel when there is a headline to be written. Please, please, don't let that headline be: "Burnley are relegated thanks to a Chris Wood goal for Eddie Howe’s Newcastle."
