Sean: I imagine this will get about a million thumbs down - but after yesterday does anyone else think that football might come home sooner if the UK entered a single British team into the World Cup and Euros? Andy Robertson at left-back? Bale as Kane's strike partner? No? Just a thought.

  4. Hennessey sees Redpublished at 09:23 Greenwich Mean Time 26 November 2022

    FT: Wales 0-2 Iran

A potentially decisive moment in determining Wales' fate.

    Or was it?

Wales were below par even before goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey was sent off for a reckless challenge on Iran's Mehdi Taremi.

  5. Gone in 180 minutespublished at 09:21 Greenwich Mean Time 26 November 2022

    FT: Qatar 1-3 Senegal

Hosts Qatar have been eliminated in the group stage of the World Cup after Senegal condemned them to a second straight defeat.

Qatar made history by becoming the first country from the region to host the World Cup and now have the unwanted record of becoming just the second home team to exit the competition at the group stage, after South Africa in 2010.

Their fate was all but decided after their 3-1 defeat to Senegal, but a 1-1 draw between Netherlands and Ecuador meant there was no coming back for the hosts.

  7. Neymar out until after group stagepublished at 09:17 Greenwich Mean Time 26 November 2022

    Oh no!

Brazil forward Neymar is out of the squad for the remainder of the group stage after he sustained an ankle injury in their 2-0 win over Serbia.

Neymar sat with his face covered while receiving treatment and pictures showed his right ankle was swollen.

He described the injury as "one of the hardest moments of my career".

    FT: Wales 0-2 Iran

    Shaimaa Khalil
    BBC News in Doha, Qatar

Iran's players are in a difficult position. They're on the world's biggest stage, representing a country in deep political turmoil where anti-government protesters have been killed and arrested. They're being asked to have a stronger stance in support of the protesters, but anything they say or do will likely have repercussions back home.

All the while, the players have the crucial job of performing well, with the hope of delivering a victory on the football pitch.

'Give USA credit'published at 09:09 Greenwich Mean Time 26 November 2022

Dazza67: Hang on here! Nobody is giving the USA credit for the way they played. They were just much better than England. Let's start getting real. England played their same boring game and came up against a better team. I am an England fan, but cannot see them getting passed the last 16 when they keep picking Kane.

    FT: Wales 0-2 Iran

Wales captain Gareth Bale has said qualifying for the knockout stages of the World Cup "will be difficult" following his side's defeat to Iran.

Robert Page's side have one point from two games and must beat England to stand any chance of progressing.

Stoppage-time goals by Roozbeh Cheshmi and Ramin Rezaeian sealed the defeat for Wales, who also had goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey sent off.

"It's gutting - there's no other way to say it," Bale said.
