  2. 'Gavi is impressive'published at 85 mins

    Spain 5-0 Costa Rica

    Rob Green
Former England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

Gavi is impressive. I've seen him for Barcelona a number of times live and he's very, very good against the teams that aren't so good. It's when he's come up against the big teams in the Champions League, that's when it's been a question mark.

Yes he's young. Yes got time to improve but he's in a World Cup, he's been playing in the Champions League. He's also for now.

Alvaro Morata wants to get involved in the goals. His low shot from a tight angle is saved by the legs of Keylor Navas although the flag then went up so it wouldn't have counted any way.

Spain playing some fantastic football here. Doing what both Argentina and Germany failed to do, killing the game off early.

Costa Rica substitute Kendall Waston, at 6ft 5in, doesn't look a man to argue with. Gavi at 5ft 8in angrily reacts to a strong challenge but is quickly talked out of continuing the argument by his team-mates. Probably wise.

That goal deserved to stand and there's no VAR interruption so it's five for Spain.

  7. 'Wonderful finish'published at 78 mins

    Spain 5-0 Costa Rica

    Rob Green
Former England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

It's a wonderful finish by Gavi, outside of the boot, edge of the box and in off the post. The only question is does Alvaro Morata stray offside? Maybe his toe...

It was a tight call but I don't think Morata was offside. Down to fraction of inches of people's body parts.

GOAL - Spain 5-0 Costa Ricapublished at 75 mins

    Gavi

Gavi is the youngest man to play for Spain at a World Cup and the 18-year-old Barcelona midfielder gets a delightful goal for his country's fifth.

Substitute Alvaro Morata picks him out with a cross, Gavi sets himself, strikes a volley, cutting across the ball with the outside of the boot and it bounces in off the post. Lovely technique, as you'd expect from a Barcelona midfielder, and that's five - and another goal you just have to sit back and admire.

Still plenty of time for more.

Costa Rica at their best could beat a Spain side not on top of their game. It's unfair to call them a walkover team. Spain have shown up and deserve credit. Costa Rica are not what they were a few years ago but they can usually hold their own better than this.

  10. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 72 mins

    Spain 4-0 Costa Rica

Nico Williams, whose brother Inaki plays for Ghana, comes on for Spain for the last 20 minutes plus injury time and he is another hugely talented youngster - a 20-year-old winger for Athletic Bilbao.

Marco Asensio was the man to come off.

    Spain 4-0 Costa Rica

    Rob Green
Former England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

I'm tempted to say this game won't tell us a lot about Spain in this tournament. The strength of the opposition, Costa Rica really haven't made it difficult.

They have made it a walk in the park for Spain. Realistically, the substitutions Spain are making, they are blooding youngsters, resting old legs; they know the game is up.

Spain know they have won the game - they have won it since 15 minutes in. It's been a cruise for them.

  12. Solid Sergio in midfieldpublished at 17:29 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November 2022

    Spain 4-0 Costa Rica

A solid display in midfield from Sergio Busquets, as shown by his heatmap, exactly what his team needed in this match.

He completed 96 passes with a 91% accuracy including 17 passes in the final third.

Not bad for a 34 year old.

  13. YELLOW CARDpublished at 69 mins

    Spain 4-0 Costa Rica

Costa Rica's Francisco Calvo is the first man to see yellow in this match, a tackle made out of frustration, late and a bit nasty on Carlos Soler. It's been a perfect afternoon for Spain, so they don't want a needless injury to take the gloss off it.

    Spain 4-0 Costa Rica

    Rob Green

Costa Rica are looking at playing some of the great European players in this Spain side. The masters of finding space and how to solve problems on the pitch; using your intuition and using your understanding of football.

They're always thinking, Spain. Always understanding ways to change the game.

This Costa Rica team looked exhausted before the whistle blew to start the match, arguably the worst performance of the opening round of matches, absolutely woeful.

    Changes for both sides.

Costa Rica - on Alvaro Zamora and Bryan Ruiz (who had a four-year spell with Fulham between 2011 and 2015), off Anthony Contreras and Jewison Bennette.

Spain - on Alejandro Balde, an international debut for the 19-year-old defender from Barcelona, and off Jordi Alba.

Joel Campbell has had just 24 touches in this match and one in the penalty area - only Celso Borges (27) has had more for Costa Rica.

Los Ticos are going to have to get their main man into the game more if they want a consolation goal, or even just a shot on target.
