Timo Werner would have given Germany a threat in behind and opened up space for other players so his injury was a blow.

So nearly a very nice forward move from Spain to try and get Dani Olmo in. Antonio Rudiger sees the move developing, though, and strides back to cut the final pass out.

I'm expecting a little bit of the same. Spain will try but they're not going to commit 100% to win this game, they will feel they don't need to take that risk. There are risks.

I think Germany know they've got Costa Rica in their last game and should be able to beat them. A point here is in their own hands. Stay tight, stay solid at the back and then if the chance appears then take it.

I thought Ferran Torres could have got across the near post then. Marco Asensio was looking up, wanting him to do that.

Ferran Torres is at the back post as Marco Asensio charges down the left. The cross is aimed towards the Barcelona forward, but Manuel Neuer is there, dropping on the ball to cut out any threat.

You would hope that the game will open up because a draw is much better for Spain than Germany because that would leaver Germany needing a favour from Spain in the last game.

The first act is for Germany to fire a ball down the pitch that Jamal Musiala brings down but can't make work to stage a threatening attack.

Intriguing more than outright exciting in the first half.

Let's flip that and have some drama, eh?

We are back under way, with no changes from either side...

Has this much anticipated contest lived up to expectations? I’m not entirely sure.

Most intriguing game so far. Rudiger is quite a threat, maybe a set piece will decide this one…

If Antonio Rudiger had held his run a fraction the picture in Group E would be looking so much healthier for Germany.

  18. Germany will be satisfiedpublished at 19:57 Greenwich Mean Time 27 November 2022

    Spain 0-0 Germany

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at Al Bayt Stadium

Germany will be happy to reach half-time goalless. They had a big scare when Dani Olmo hit the bar but they have also looked dangerous themselves from set pieces and had that goal disallowed from Antonio Rudiger.

Spain are weaving some lovely patterns but there is not much in this and there was enough qualilty in the first half to set up the expectation for after the break.

Germany are lacking a forward. We are going to have to give Harry Kane a German passport soon.

There is no reference point. They are lacking a goalscorer.

We always talk about Spain for the beautiful way that they play football but their press has really impressed me. They are forcing Germany to play a different way and find no rhythm.
