Almost complete domination of the ball from Spain - they've had 85.8% possession. Japan are largely chasing shadows.

This is exactly what I expected from Germany from the first day. They are absolutely dominating possession, Costa Rica are struggling to find connections and they're finally entering the Germany half.

What's going on here?

Keylor Navas scrambles across the pitch to try and keep a loose ball back in play. A huge shout goes up from the crowd as the Costa Rica keeper slides to stop it but we play on.

Crikey that's gone out by well over a foot.

The average positions from the first 15 minutes tell a story.

Not a single Costa Rica player (black dots) in the Germany half.

Over 15 minutes on the clock and Costa Rica finally manage to string three or four passes together. They've only touched the ball three times in Germany's half so far.

Germany are bossing the midfield. Goretzka's header was on target, pushed away by Keylor Navas. Costa Rica can hardly get out of their own half.

Japan aren't taking any risks just yet, they are keeping their shape, staying compact and trying to prevent Spain from adding a quick second that would kill this game off.

I think word of Germany's goal has reached the Japan fans. Their end of the stadium is silent for the first time tonight.

Andrew: You can see the intent from Germany there after scoring that opener. No celebrating, just regather the ball and run back to the centre circle, they’re leaving nothing to chance tonight. Compare this urgency to Belgium’s whimper earlier.

The chances keep coming for Germany. This time Leon Goretzka gets his head to a back-post cross but Keylor Navas gets down to save superbly.

Thirty goals in 60 appearances for Spain for Alvaro Morata. You put in a cross like that and he does not miss.

The Japan fans remain loud, however. Plenty of time left for things to change.

What a start by Germany. What a worrying opening for Costa Rica.

Germany had threatened several times in that first ten minutes before breaking the deadlock through Serge Gnabry's header. Just what Hansi Flick's side needed as they chase the win that will seal qualification.

It's just too easy for Spain and Morata to get on to the end of this cross.

It's a lovely ball in but there's just not enough presence in the Japan defence to even put Morata off.

Morata heads in from four yards out. There's nowhere near enough pressure or challenges on him.
