Germany have managed to break the deadlock through Serge Gnabry with a header after 10 minutes. They have managed to keep their end of the bargain going and they will try to put a bit of pressure on the other two teams in the group.

    Alvaro Morata (11 mins)

    That man again!

Three games, three goals for Alvaro Morata, who heads in Cesar Azpilicueta's cross from close range.

This is bad news for Japan, who are going out as things stand.

It had been coming. David Raum gets down the left and cross for Serge Gnabry, who guides his header across goal into the far corner.

    Great header.

Thomas Muller heads wide for Germany. A collector's item surely, he is pretty much unmarked as the ball comes in from the right.

Just a little warning for Spain there.

  7. Postpublished at 19:09 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2022

Ooh, Sergio Busquets needs to be more switched on at the back as a heavy touch is pounced on and the ball is worked to Junya Ito, who fires into the sidenetting.

A warning shot for Spain if they let their concentration slip.

Talk about dancing feet. Jamal Musiala waltzes past four Costa Rica defenders in the penalty area but can't get a shot away and the chance is lost.

  9. Spain play keep-ballpublished at 19:08 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2022

    Japan 0-0 Spain

    Chris Bevan
BBC Sport at Khalifa International Stadium, Qatar

The Japan fans around me get very excited whenever their side gets the ball... which hasn't been very often in the opening minutes.

Spain have had 85% possession so far. They are probably disappointed with that.

  10. Postpublished at 19:08 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2022

    Japan 0-0 Spain

Nico Williams is a danger down the right and he uses his pace to get to the by-line before putting in a dangerous cross. Japan scramble clear but only as far as Sergio Busquets who, thankfully for Japan, is not the most lethal from distance and he launches a shot well over.

  11. Postpublished at 19:07 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2022

    Costa Rica 0-0 Germany

The pattern looks pretty well set. Costa Rica have pretty much every player back behind the ball.

  12. Postpublished at 19:06 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2022

    Costa Rica 0-0 Germany

Serge Gnabry has another effort on goal for Germany before the offside flag goes up.

That all comes from Costa Rica right-back Keysher Fuller, who made a right hash of controlling the ball on the edge of his own box.

Japan are dropping right off with a flat back five and four in front. But the moment they turnover the ball they get up in support and run behind.

  14. 'Good save from Navas'published at 19:05 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2022

    Costa Rica 0-0 Germany

    Conor McNamara
    BBC Radio 5 Live commentator

Germany have had the first attempt on target and it's Musiala veering in onto his right boot just on the edge of the penalty area, a shot which Keylor Navas got down well to save and push away.

  15. Postpublished at 19:05 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2022

    Japan 0-0 Spain

Japan have had to be patient to get a touch of the ball but they win possession on halfway and attack quickly down the flank as Takefusa Kubo beats his man before cutting back to Ao Tanaka but the Spain defence is just about able to clear.

  16. Postpublished at 19:04 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2022

    Costa Rica 0-0 Germany

First save of the night is made by Keylor Navas as he beats Jamal Musiala's effort away. I've got a feeling the Costa Rica goalkeeper is going to be kept busy.

  17. Postpublished at 19:02 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2022

    Japan 0-0 Spain

Japan have gone with five at the back and are happy to let Spain have the ball in these early stages. It is Spain who are first to attack but Gavi's cross sails over everyone in the box.

It's wide open. It appears every game in the World Cup has so much weighing on it in terms of permutations. And this group is no different.
