  1. A Ronaldo goal or a Fernandes goal?published at 20:18 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2022

    Portugal 1-0 Uruguay

    Ian Dennis
BBC Radio 5 Live senior football reporter

Good luck to the FIFA official who has to go into the changing room to tell Cristiano Ronaldo he hasn't scored that. Bruno Fernandes has been credited with it.

    Portugal 1-0 Uruguay

Aged 37 years and 296 days, Cristiano Ronaldo is the oldest player to score in consecutive World Cup appearances (if he did indeed score that goal).

  3. 'I'm not sure he touches that'published at 20:16 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2022

    Portugal 1-0 Uruguay

    Matthew Upson
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

What a threat Ronaldo is when the ball is in the air. Unbelievable ability to head the ball for a player than is as talented as he is with the ball at his feet.

This is all about the timing of the run, the desire, the athleticism and getting across the face. I'm not even too sure if he touches that... He doesn't touch the ball.

Cristiano Ronaldo with the breakthrough goal - and that takes him level with Eusebio. Nine goals at the World Cup.

  5. goal

GOAL - Portugal 1-0 Uruguaypublished at 54 mins

    Cristiano Ronaldo or Bruno Fernandes

Breakthrough. Cristiano Ronaldo goes up to produce a glancing header from Bruno Fernandes' cross and the ball ends up in the net and Portugal take the lead.

Diego Godin was the man keeping Ronaldo onside, but who will get given the goal? Ronaldo or Fernandes.

It is the lightest of touches, if a touch at all, but it's still the first goal of the match.

  6. 'Not a great effort'published at 20:12 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2022

    Portugal 0-0 Uruguay

    Matthew Upson
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

For one of the first times in this match, Uruguay were found a little bit high up the pitch and a little bit open. Joao Felix should do better. He's at a tight angle but if he opts to shoot, he has to go across goal.

It's not a great effort, I think that's why Bruno Fernandes is unhappy with his teammate.

Federico Valverde, the Real Madrid man, tries to provide a moment of quality, swinging the ball in from the right wing but the cross is too close to Diogo Costa who shows good handling to deal with it.

We said it was a slow burner in the first half, well it's in danger of extinguishing altogether. Soporific is the word that comes to mind.

Portugal have already been forced into one change and Ruben Neves looks in a great deal of pain. If they have to make another substitution that will leave them with only one other window to use their remaining three changes.

  11. Postpublished at 51 mins

    Portugal 0-0 Uruguay

It's getting a bit nasty out there. Matias Vecino clatters into Ruben Neves and the Wolves captain looks in a lot of pain as he lies on the turf.

Mathias Olivera, not wanting to feel left out, also sticks an early second-half reducer in too.

After a few minutes of treatment, Neves, rather gingerly and holding the back of his knee, gets to his feet.

  12. 'Toothless'published at 20:05 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2022

    Portugal 0-0 Uruguay

    Matthew Upson
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

It has been toothless, unfortunately. Any kind of teeth would do just to liven it up a bit.

Portugal have failed to have a shot on target in the first half of a World Cup game for just the third time (also no shots on target v South Korea in 2002 and Ivory Coast in 2010).

    HT: Portugal 0-0 Uruguay

It's exactly the game we feared it might be. In this 0-0, Uruguay will probably be happier, the game has followed their script more than Portugal's.

  17. Dull affair at Lusailpublished at 20:02 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2022

    Portugal 0-0 Uruguay

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at Lusail Stadium

Not much to shout about at Lusail Stadium. Portugal have been probing away but the big moment was that superb run from Rodrigo Bentancur that ended with the intervention of keeper Diogo Costa.

Cristiano Ronaldo has been quiet - but he is not on his own there.

There will be some big decisions for Gareth Southgate to make tomorrow. Jack Grealish is one who will be hoping he gets the call to start and he's been talking to BBC Radio 5 Live...
