Sunderland face Wycombe on 21 May for a place in the second tier.

The play-offs continue on Friday with Luton v Huddersfield in the Championship.

Sheffield Wednesday boss Darren Moore to Sky Sports: "It was a pulsating game. It was a closely fought encounter. Both teams gave everything. The atmosphere was electric.

"One moment decided it. I'm disappointed for the players. They have to take it on the chin.

"Football can kick you where it hurts.

"That's the end of our season. It's been a good campaign. This was a bridge too far.

"The one clear-cut chance they had came at the end. You have to give them credit for staying in the game when we were knocking on their door.

"I'm sure League One has lived up to expectations but that's the end of the road for us."

More from Alex Neil: "Ten minutes [of injury time] felt like extra time anyway.

"Getting the goal in that period was great. Patrick deserved his goal. He was terrific.

"I've got complete belief in the squad I've got. I'm hoping they have complete belief in my messages. It makes a good combination. I've got a squad who are very selfless.

"When you go to any club you don't know what's going on behind the scenes. They weren't in a difficult position in the league [when I took over]. There were just a few variables we had to improve and I feel we've done that."

On whether their fans will fear more play-off agony: "I don't think our fans will think that. They have belief in this team.

"Wycombe are a difficult team. They grind in and do everything to get the result. My focus is not on that at the moment. I want to go home and see my wife and kids and in a couple of days we'll get started."

Sunderland boss Alex Neil to Sky Sports: "It was a difficult game. We switched off and it cost us a goal. That was disappointing as I thought we were excellent throughout.

"It's the first time I haven't made a change [earlier on]. I believed so much in how we were playing I felt if I changed it I'd dilute what we were trying to do. Thankfully that belief paid off and we have the chance to go to Wembley.

"I knew what my team were capable of. Once you go behind [it's tempting] to change things because everybody thinks it's a problem but I don't think it was. I don't think we deserved to concede. It's how we reacted to that. The reaction was terrific."

Since they have walked through the door, Jack Clarke and Patrick Roberts have shown the quality to win a game. Sunderland were always a threat.

Gregory P: Roberts scored last season to relegate Sheff Wednesday and now he’s denied them promotion.

Patrick Roberts scored Derby's second goal in a 3-3 draw with the Owls on the final day of last season that sent them down.

Sunderland manager Alex Neil is a play-off specialist.

He has won promotion both times he has been in the play-offs, taking Hamilton to the Scottish Premiership in 2014 and Norwich to the Premier League in 2015.

He becomes the eighth manager to reach a play-off final with sides in both the second and third tier. The last was Gary Johnson (2008 with Bristol City, 2013 with Yeovil Town).

Sunderland striker Ross Stewart to Sky Sports: "The boys are buzzing. I think so [we deserved to win]. Tough game. I thought the boys were tremendous. A late goal, no better feeling than that.

"The reaction was excellent. I thought we recovered well and deservedly got level.

"Hopefully we can get the job done. Watching [Wycombe] over two legs we know how tough a game it will be. We’ve got over a week. We’ll rest well and I’m sure the gaffer will set us up well.

"We’ve got to try to take care of the job.

"I’ll enjoy it, it’s not all the time you get to play at Wembley. But we’re well aware the job isn’t done."

Sunderland man of the match Bailey Wright to Sky Sports: "Sheffield Wednesday gave us a right good game. There's always got to be a loser but we've got ourselves in the final.

"We put our bodies on the line. We have big-game players who can punish teams. We tried to keep a clean sheet but gave ourselves a platform for the [attacking] boys. We had incredible support on Friday and today. It shows the size of the club. It's by no means job done.

"Alex Neil has been class. He's brought a real culture and technical side to our game. We have quality [up front] and players who can dig in. We have a real togetherness. He works hard every day and doesn't leave anything untouched. He's been a joy to work with. I'm sure he'll have us well prepared for the final.

"We've got to believe. It will be a tough final, we know that. We're looking forward to it."

The last time the Owls were in the play-offs their campaign was ended with a penalty shootout loss at Hillsborough after a 1-1 draw with Huddersfield. They were probably the better side here tonight but when they look back they just didn't create enough chances.

Sunderland goalscorer Patrick Roberts to Sky Sports: "The goal came at a good time. I've had a few opportunities in the last few weeks.

"We had the energy to get up the pitch. Jack Clarke did great on the left, I put it on target. What a time to do it.

"We kept believing and kept going. We had to dig in and find that extra bit of energy. Thankfully we had that in the end. We're delighted."

The way Alex Neil has managed that game is unbelievable. What a performance.

Sunderland have come into the play-offs not being favourites and that's been good for them.

We were better equipped than the last time we were at Hillsborough and that showed tonight in the effort and the belief.

When Patrick Roberts started the season on loan at Troyes in the French top flight from Manchester City, he wouldn't have expected to be here now.

From Ligue 1 to League One - but he's just made himself a Black Cats hero.

That was only his second goal in 15 appearances for Sunderland.

Sheffield Wednesday will be in League One again next season.

The play-offs, an amazing place to be if you win and the very, very worst if you lose.
