Sheff Wed 0-0 Sunderland (agg 0-1)

Sunderland manager Alex Neil has won promotion both times he has been in the play-offs, taking Hamilton to the Scottish Premiership in 2014 and Norwich to the Premier League in 2015.

He could become the eighth manager to reach a play-off final with sides in both the second and third tier. The last was Gary Johnson (2008 with Bristol City, 2013 with Yeovil Town).

The atmosphere has ramped up 10 notches now. This is the Hillsborough crowd's turn to give the players a surge of adrenaline to start the game the way they need to.

Then it's the turn of the players to carry it on.

The perfect scenario would be for Wednesday to get an early goal and put Sunderland on the back foot.

Sunderland are 6-3 up over their three meetings this season, including their 1-0 win in the first leg.

Wednesday won 3-0 at Hillsborough in November but the next month Sunderland battered them 5-0 at home.

It's a one-goal lead. I don't think it changes my view of the tie. If it was 2-0 I think that's slightly different because even if you concede you still have an advantage. One goal changes the game. We know what we have to do.

The game is still open, we feel that and that's the main thing. We know we have to play a lot better than that [first leg], we know that's what we have to do

  9. Two League One big dogs go head to headpublished at 19:40 British Summer Time 9 May 2022

Sheff Wed v Sunderland (19:45 BST)

These are two of the biggest League One teams you could imagine really. Well you could imagine Liverpool and Manchester United I guess but you know what I mean.

The first leg was watched by 44,742 people. That is more than any EFL play-off semi-final ever, including the Championship.

Wednesday are looking to bounce straight back from last year's relegation but Sunderland have been in League One for four years now.

Mad as it might sound to people my age but the Owls haven't been in the Premier League since 2000.

There's just something about play-off football isn't there?

For one of these two teams there'll be no more matches this season, no more training and (at least) one more season in League One.

The first leg was understandably a tense affair that the Black Cats had the better of but Wednesday grew into towards the end.

The Owls are going to be backed by a vociferous home crowd, just as Sunderland were on Friday, and an early goal for them could really set us up for a cracking second leg.

A draw will be enough to see Sunderland to Wembley and Alex Neil is more than capable of coaching his side to that. Of his 16 games in charge of the Wearsiders they've lost just once.

Sheff Wed v Sunderland (19:45 BST)

Two changes for Sheffield Wednesday. Jack Hunt comes in for Liam Palmer at right-back and Josh Windass is in for former West Brom and stoke man Saido Berahino in attack.

Sunderland boss Alex Neil decides it wasn't broken so he's not gonna try and fix it. He names an unchanged starting XI but striker Nathan Broadhead is fit enough to return to the bench after missing the first leg with a knock. Could the in-form frontman go on to have a crucial say?

Sheff Wed: Peacock-Farrell, Storey, Dean, Hutchinson, Hunt,Byers, Luongo, Johnson, Bannan, Windass, Gregory. Subs: Palmer,Paterson, Kamberi, Dunkley, Berahino, Wildsmith, Mendez-Laing.

Sunderland: Patterson, Wright, Batth, Cirkin, Gooch, Evans, O'Nien, Clarke, Roberts, Pritchard, Stewart. Subs: Doyle, Embleton, Broadhead, Neil, Matete, Hume, Hoffmann.

Sunderland won the first leg 1-0 thanks to Ross Stewart's goal from a tight angle right at the end of the first half.

They could have won by more but Alex Pritchard's effort hit the bar and Stewart almost added a late second.

  15. Wembley or bustpublished at 19:24 British Summer Time 9 May 2022

Sheff Wed v Sunderland (19:45 BST)

Years ago a season in the second tier would have been a nightmare for Sheffield Wednesday or Sunderland.

    Now it's the dream.

One of the Owls or Black Cats are 90 minutes away from a Wembley shot at promotion - and the other will be playing League One football with *Team X, Y and Z* next season.

*I don't want angry fans of Team X, Y or Z shouting at me for saying their teams are small so I won't name them.
