  1. Plenty of play-off pain for Ukrainepublished at 19:38 British Summer Time 1 June 2022

    Scotland v Ukraine (19:45)

Here in Scotland we like to think we have the market cornered for sporting hard luck stories, but the World Cup play-offs have not been kind to Ukraine.

This is their sixth attempt after five disappointments.

The tale of woe started in 1997 with a 3-1 aggregate loss to Croatia before falling to Germany in 2001 (5-2). In 2009 Greece edged them out 1-0 and the worst of all came in 2013 when France recovered from a 2-0 defeat in Kyiv to win 3-0 in Paris.

Ukraine have been to one World Cup, reaching the last eight in 2006.

  2. Anyone for penalties?published at 19:37 British Summer Time 1 June 2022

    Scotland v Ukraine (19:45)

Play-off defeats to England and the Netherlands denied Scotland access to the Euros in 2000 and 2004 but there is recent success to draw on, having got past Israel and Serbia to reach last year’s delayed European Championship.

Both of those games went all the way to penalties, with Scotland converting five out five each time.

I’m not sure the nation could deal with that level of tension again.

It's a really positive decision from Steve Clarke to go with the two strikers. Hopefully one will link the team and get Hickey and Robertson higher up the pitch. In order to have two strikers on the pitch, you need to have possession for most of the night.

  5. Distant memories from down underpublished at 19:34 British Summer Time 1 June 2022

    Scotland v Ukraine (19:45)

This is Scotland's first World Cup qualifying play-off match since 1985, when Australia were beaten over two long-distance legs thanks to goals from Davie Cooper and Frank McAvennie at Hampden and a goalless draw in Melbourne.

I'm not concerned about the Scots being unable to perform. That's not because they don't care, it's because they are incredibly professional. When you walk over the white line, if you have your mind on something else you have no chance. The issue is can Ukraine do the same? It's a different level for them.

  7. Draws drag Ukraine into play-offspublished at 19:30 British Summer Time 1 June 2022

    Scotland v Ukraine (19:45)

Ukraine, meanwhile, finished second in Group D behind France, picking up 12 points from eight matches, which allowed them to finish a point above Finland.

They were unbeaten throughout, drawing home and away with the current World Cup holders, with their only two wins coming on the road in Finland and Bosnia.

  8. Lucky seven for Scotland?published at 19:29 British Summer Time 1 June 2022

Incidentally, seven is the most qualifying wins Scotland has ever managed, equalling the efforts of the squad that got to the 1998 World Cup in France.

Things are ramping up. The sun is shining, the stands are beginning to brim with Scotland fans, jigging and roaring their way through verse after verse of 500 miles.

It gives you a real impression of what the Euros last year should have been.

So, since losing consecutive World Cup qualifying games in October/November 2016 against Slovakia and England, Scotland have only lost one of their last 16 (W11 D4), a 2-0 defeat away to Denmark last September.

    Scotland v Ukraine (19:45)

A wee refresher on how Scotland got here...

Steve Clarke's side finished as runners-up behind Denmark in World Cup qualifying Group F, picking up a very healthy 23 points from their 10 matches after seven wins, two draws and one defeat, while they only conceded seven times.

There were a few scares and shaky moments along the way, including a late winner away to the Faroe Islands and an even later effort bundled in by Scott McTominay after twice coming from behind to beat Israel at Hampden, while there was a vital success away to second seeds Austria and the campaign ended on a high note with a 2-0 victory over the Danes in Glasgow.

  12. Tartan Army invited to sing opponents' anthempublished at 19:21 British Summer Time 1 June 2022

    Scotland v Ukraine (19:45)

Scotland fans have been invited to join in with the Ukrainian anthem in a show of solidarity for their opponents.

Flyers containing a phonetic version of the national song are being handed out to the Tartan Army so they can sing along, which is a very nice idea, although it's a plan which would benefit from a rehearsal or two.

Fear not, I'm sure the 3,000 or so Ukraine fans inside the stadium will be more than loud enough to make up for any mumbling.

Craig Gordon played in both of those matches against Ukraine and is still going strong at the age of 39.

Tonight, the Hearts captain wins his 67th cap and he'll be hoping for a 29th international clean sheet off the back of one his best seasons yet.

Not sure he could still get away with that gold outfit though...

    Scotland v Ukraine (19:45)

Scotland and Ukraine are due to face each other again in the Nations League, with a double-header scheduled for September.

However, tonight's match is just the third ever meeting, with their paths crossing in the race to reach Euro 2008.

Goals from Oleksandr Kucher and Andriy Shevchenko gave Ukraine a 2-0 win in Kyiv in October 2006.

A year on, Scotland were 3-1 victors at Hampden after early goals from Kenny Miller and Lee McCulloch, with James McFadden also getting in on the act.

With Sunday's big game in Cardiff to come, our Welsh cousins will be keeping a close eye on this one for sure and may just be hoping for extra-time along with a few bumps and bruises.

Wales have already been in action this evening, with a team missing a whole host of regulars falling to a 2-1 defeat in Poland in their Nations League opener.

You've got to put the emotion behind you. I know a lot there's different opinions on that but it's a game of football tonight. There's a huge prize at stake. You can't let these opportunities pass you by. Scotland have got to be at the top of their game and if they do that, I think they'll take it.
