    England win Euro 2022

Eight-time winners Germany have appeared in 69% of the Women’s European Championship finals (9/13), but Sunday's game was the first final they have lost. And one incident in the first half has made it a bitter result to swallow.

Earlier we mentioned Sir Geoff Hurst's hat-trick in the 1966 World Cup final and some in Germany continue to argue that one of the goals did not cross the line. Now they believe that England captain Leah Williamson should have been penalised for handball.

A story on German newspaper Bild's website, external begins by saying "Germany cries with our football women - and is angry about the new Wembley scam! In the 2-1 defeat after extra time, we are cheated again almost exactly 56 years after the Wembley goal scandal."

One of its reporters drew comparisons to the goal in 1966 by tweeting a picture and saying "and again Wembley cheating - despite VAR! The German team didn't deserve that!"

And another tweet by Bild reads "British Press - English conceal Wembley fraud".

Loved Chloe Kelly's energy yesterday. Orchestrating the crowd when taking throw-ins, expecting the ball and on her toes for the goal, and her celebration was a vibe.

Sally Butler from Stafford Soccer Mums, a team for players aged 18 to 60, said the atmosphere at Wembley for the Euros final had been "just spine-tingling".

"I took a moment a few times just looking around and just thinking about where we were and what we were part of - it really was something quite incredible," she added.

Team-mate Ellie Roberts said: "What that particular women's team has created is a legacy for everyone going forward, not even just for children, but for my generation too. It should become part of everyday life that everyone plays football."

English sporting achievement isn't exactly celebrated north of the border, but I hope the success of the tournament generally has a profound effect on the women's game in Scotland. The technical brilliance of France and Spain, the strength of Germany, the determination of minnows like Iceland and the resilience and camaraderie of the English players have made for a memorable and inspiring tournament. Lessons to be learnt for the men's game too.

The Lionesses are off on a well-earned break after today but it is not too long before they are back in action.

Their next game on home soil is in Stoke against Luxembourg in a World Cup qualifier on 6 September. Will there be a sell-out crowd to welcome the European champions to the Potteries?

Before that, they are away to Austria in another qualifier on 3 September.

I’ve been watching and supporting England since I can remember, cheering on Karen Carney who was my idol as I too have played striker for many teams throughout my life. I’ve met Karen and Jill Scott and they were the loveliest people. It's incredible that Scott is still playing and is so rightly adored. Though this bunch of players are special, I will never forget watching those that came before. Their professionalism when they weren’t getting paid and their passion for the game. It inspired me to play and attend England women’s matches, even when there were only a few thousand in the stands. Their legacy must not be forgotten and how every single one of them played their part in what the Lionesses achieved last night. I'll admit I shed a tear when they lifted the trophy. I've played, coached, watched and lived through the pain of football... and finally, FINALLY, it came home.

Seeing the Lionesses up close is "amazing" and "surreal" according to one family at today's celebrations at Trafalgar Square.

Deb Joyce, her daughter Holly Allen and her granddaughter Poppy Allen travelled from Dorset to London to watch last night's final, before staying on to soak up the atmosphere.

"We’ve never experienced anything like that before," Mrs Allen said.

"It was great seeing them for real," 12-year-old Poppy added.

Poppy, a Chelsea fan in the WSL, said she had even made a special sign for a favourite player reading: "Millie Bright win it tonight."
