The Fitzgeralds say they took a break from their holiday to come to the celebration in Trafalgar Square as they "couldn't miss being part of this".

"I'm looking forward to soaking up the atmosphere," Elsie Fitzgerlad, from Yorkshire, said.

For her 11-year-old daughter Siena and son Vaughan, 13, coming to today's celebrations is about seeing the Lionesses in the flesh.

"I found it really empowering as a woman," Mrs Fitzgerald said.

"And for my daughter, what a future this means for them."

"The crowd for the women's team is much more family orientated.

"We wouldn't have put this much effort in to see the men's team".

Siena, who plays football for a local team, said she thinks women's football has now "completely changed".

Will Gregory, 42, his wife Zara, 40, and his two daughters Grace, 12, and Ava, 9 have come from Nottingham and were at the game yesterday.

Grace has been playing since she was five. She has played for Nottingham Forest academy and wants to play for the women’s team when she’s older.

She played in the boys team for about five years and Will says they’re as good, if not better, than them because they listen more.

“As a mum of two girls, it was a pretty special moment,” Zara says.

“It has been underfunded for years, the men get paid 50 times more than the women. The leadership, teamwork - it is everything you want to teach them about.”

Will says this moment will be an “I was there moment” for Grace and Ava in years to come.

    BBC Radio 4

Kelly Smith, the Lionesses' second-highest goal scorer, says watching the game was “such a proud moment”, having been part of previous generations that “worked so hard to develop and promote the women’s game”.

“You can’t forget all those women that didn’t have as much investment or quality that these Lionesses have shown us - they’ve set an example for women and girls and inspired a nation," she says.

Smith won 117 caps, scoring 46 goals, before retiring in 2015. She tells BBC Woman’s Hour: “I’m pinching myself, this is what I was hoping for when I was playing.”

Dame Heather Rabbatts, the first female board member of the FA, says the focus now is on continuing the momentum.

“Those of us who were founders of women’s football, we could fit around one little kitchen table and look at it now, it’s been an incredible journey," she says.

"Many countries didn’t even want to bid for the Women’s Euros and now you’ll find a whole host of countries wanting to bid for more major tournaments.”
