Arsenal were absolutely electric up front in the first five or 10 minutes. You were just thinking ‘wow’, watching Jesus. His position fooled me into thinking something would happen involving him for the goal but it was Zinchenko. White slips free, draws Zaha away and leaves Zinchenko space for a header. Martinelli deservedly put them in front from there.

Nick: A cracking first half ruined only by the interminable drumming from the home side, which should now be filed away with goal music, ‘that’ band, giant flags and the Mexican wave as things that are well past their prime.

The team that scored the opening goal of each of the last 10 Premier League seasons went on to win their opening game, since Liverpool drew 1-1 versus Sunderland at Anfield in 2011/12 after Luis Suarez netted the opening goal of the campaign.

Only Liverpool (5) have netted the opening goal of a Premier League season as many times as Arsenal (5).

Rob: Really liking this 'let it flow' mentality from referees - if they can keep up the consistency, I do think it'll stop players going down like a sack of spuds every two seconds. Xhaka didn't really prove my point but it's much better to watch.

You've got to be encouraged by that if you're an Arsenal fan. They look a real menace on the break, with Gabriel Jesus showing glimpses that the hype built up by pre-season wasn't misplaced.

Palace have repeatedly tried to get Wilfried Zaha into the game but his growing visible petulance shows that he is getting very little out of makeshift right-back Ben White.

What a chance for Edouard and Palace late in that half - that was very reminiscent of the chance we saw at the other end. He's got to score, he really has. Six yards out, centre of the goal.

Decent first 45 minutes of the season.

Arsenal look good.

Palace less so.

Ben White is strong to get his head to the corner and clear.

That'll be it for now.

Palace will end the half with a corner after Odsonne Edouard's shot from an angle is deflected over. Arsenal will take it. It could have been worse for them.

Arsenal try to get Gabriel Jesus in but Joachim Andersen sticks out a boot to reclaim the ball.

Granit Xhaka gets the season's first booking. It is for diving.

He can't complain at all, either. He just flopped as he tried to run past Joachim Anderson after pretty much zero contact.

Not sure why he feels the need to remonstrate with the ref. Bt embarrassing for you, that mate.

You have to be scoring those, especially in a game where you are getting so few chances.

He snatched at it, perhaps as a sign of just how precious the home players know these openings are for Palace.

The free-kick is swung into the box and met by the head of Joachim Anderson to nod back across goal.

The ball goes straight to Odsonne Edouard, who has time and space to glance a header on target but straight at Aaron Ramsdale.

Now the tackles are flying in.

Wifried Zaha tracks back to win the ball and is then flattened by Ben White when the ball is played back in his direction.

Matt: I said this in the crucial defeat to Newcastle last season and I’ll say it again: Ramsdale is a bag of nerves. Not good.

That booming ball out to Zaha yields something again for Palace as the home forward is fouled by Gabriel.

This is a chance to get the ball into a dangerous area.

Grit to go with the guile.

Gabriel comes across to tackle Jordan Ayew and prevent him getting away into the Gunners half. Hard but fair, despite what Ayew has to say about it.
