    Sunderland 0-0 Norwich

You don't get much closer to a penalty than this.

Good play by Sunderland striker Ross Stewart to get by Andrew Omobamidele on the edge of the area and the defender clumsily pulls him to the ground right by the line for the box.

Alex Pritchard sets it back for Lynden Gooch to shoot at goal but his effort is hacked behind for a corner.

    Sunderland 0-0 Norwich

Lovely touch by Onel Hernandez to get away from a desperate sliding challenge from Luke O'Nien.

The Cuban runs away down the Norwich left but his low centre misses everyone in the middle.

Just got a little scrappy in the past few minutes.

Two evenly matched teams from what we've seen so far.

Norwich boss Dean Smith is looking to guide his team to a third straight league win after they took just one point from their first three league games this season.

They've been up against it at times but probably should have the lead from that Josh Sargent chance a few minutes ago.

    First booking of the day.

Dennis Cirkin mistimes one on Norwich midfielder Kieran Dowell and is shown a yellow card.

Who should Sunderland get to replace Neil (if he goes)?

Mark McGinlay: Sean (Dyche) or (Big) Sam would be fine.

Allardyce did do a great job with the Black Cats a few years ago.

    Big miss!

Kieran Dowell, who moments earlier had shown lovely close control on the edge of the area, gets in down the Norwich right and sends a low cross across the face of goal for Josh Sargent.

The American can't sort his feet and with the goal gaping bundles his effort wide from two yards out.

Would assume that Martin Canning did not expect to find himself in the Sunderland hotseat for this game when he woke up yesterday morning.

He'll have been pleased with what he's seen from the Black Cats so far.

  9. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 18 mins

    Sunderland 0-0 Norwich

    Shame this.

Norwich teenager Liam Gibbs rolled his angle blocking the ball out for a corner a few minutes ago and he gamely tried to carry on.

However, he's clearly in a lot of discomfort and he's having to be helped from the pitch.

Sam Byram is on in his place.

  10. Postpublished at 17 mins

    Sunderland 0-0 Norwich

Sunderland win a corner down their right.

Alex Pritchard plays a clever one in for the onrushing Dan Neil to shoot at goal but his effort is blocked.

    Nice idea.

  11. Postpublished at 14 mins

    Chance for the visitors.

Onel Hernandez gets in down the Norwich left and tees it back for in-form forward Josh Sargent.

He makes a good connection on his strike and Anthony Patterson in the home goal parries it away at his near post.

  12. ouch!

    Postpublished at 11 mins

    Sunderland 0-0 Norwich

    Sore one this.

Norwich win a free-kick down by the corner flag and Onel Hernandez decides he's going to go for goal.

He smashes his effort straight into the face of one-man wall Alex Pritchard.

Pritchard is just getting some treatment. Hopefully be OK to carry on.

Some neat work from Jack Clarke in the middle of the pitch.

His long range shot takes a bit deflection and loops up harmlessly into the arms of Norwich goalkeeper Tim Krul.

Moments later a deep cross to the back post finds Ross Stewart but his header is straight at Krul.

The game has settled down a little bit.

Both teams are pressing high to try to force the opposition into mistakes.

But once you break the press it can cause a bit of danger.

Norwich haven't got going at all yet.

The home side win a free-kick in a dangerous area down their left after Jack Clarke is felled.

Alex Pritchard's ball in is overhit.

  16. Postpublished at 4 mins

    Sunderland 0-0 Norwich

    Eeesh.

A warning sign for the home side.

The ball is played back to goalkeeper Anthony Patterson and he spends an age dwelling on the ball to let lively Canaries forward Josh Sargent charge down his clearance.

It goes out for a goal kick but I dare say the Black Cats keeper will move the ball a bit quicker next time.

The home side start the game on the front foot and the crowd are bang up for it.

The EFL weekend began at Kenilworth Road on Friday night as Luton and Championship leaders Sheffield United played out an entertaining 1-1 draw.

The hosts took an early lead through Carlton Morris' header before the Blades pegged them back in the second half thanks to Oli McBurnie's first league goal since December 2020.
