There are positive signs for Everton but it's clear that their issues are at the top end of the pitch.

They need a striker. The sooner they get one, the better.

  3. Digne matches Sinclair in the own goal stakespublished at 14:35 British Summer Time 13 August 2022

    FT: Aston Villa 2-1 Everton

Lucas Digne is just the second player to score an own goal in the same Premier League fixture for both clubs, with Frank Sinclair also doing so in Chelsea v Leicester. Digne is the first to do so in consecutive seasons.

Everton lose their opening two Premier League fixtures for the second time, after 2009-10.

Tyrone Mings had a lot to prove coming back into the side today. I think he played brilliantly well.

Since I started this debate let me finish it. A relegation may lead to Everton winning the Championship title. Success breeds success. At the moment they have no chance of winning anything. Or is perennial survival the entirety of Everton's business plan?

    Aston Villa 2-1 Everton

    Villa hold on.

They were the better side throughout, but had to cling on at the death in a frantic finale.

It is a first win of the season for the home side, but a second successive loss for the Blues.

On this evidence. Both of these teams will be contesting the lower quarter of the league table. What an awful performance from both sides today.

Where has this intent been from Everton for the first 85 minutes?!

Anthony Gordon finds space to shoot but his rising effort is saved by Emiliano Martinez.

    Massive chance!

Amadou Onana has been right in the thick of this since coming on.

Calum Chambers hesitates and the ball breaks for the midfielder at the back post. The Villa defender recovers just in time, though, to stick out a boot to prevent the equaliser.

  14. SUBSTITUTIONSpublished at 90+3 mins

    Aston Villa 2-1 Everton

    Villa make three late changes.

Matty Cash is limping around the edge of the pitch. He's off, as is Jacob Ramsey and Diego Carlos, who is also limping with an injury.

Ezri Konsa, Calum Chambers and Ashley Young are on.

Alan: Don't think Lampard will last beyond September.

Lewis: Bit much to be talking about relegation at the start of the season. We've had 2 hard games and there's still time in the window to get a couple of things right!

Everton have just gone for broke. Onana's ability on the by-line bringing Everton to 2-1 has made them believe they can do it.

Where has all this come from?!

Ollie Watkins gets in down the left and sees his chipped effort saved.

Down the other end, Tyrone Mings slides in to stop Salomon Rondon finishing into an empty net after Emiliano Martinez had palmed out Anthony Gordon's shot from an angle.

Bizarrely, Digne scored an own goal to score for Villa while still an Everton player last season. He's done it the other way around this season.
