Steven: Lampard has been taught by Mourinho. Not starting a striker puts more pressure on the board to go get one.

Tambuwal: Lampard's team selection today, clearly shows he played under Mourinho.

  5. Maupay not involvedpublished at 14:00 British Summer Time 13 August 2022

    Brighton v Newcastle (15:00 BST)

    Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton boss Graham Potter has told TV in the last few minutes that Neal Maupay is not involved today as he continues to be linked with a move away from the club.

The French forward has been linked with both Nottingham Forest and Everton.

"It's the transfer window and sometimes these things come into the decision making," Potter said when asked why Maupay was not involved.

Maupay has scored 26 times in 102 Premier League appearances for Brighton.

John: Everton were lucky to stay up last season. Think they will definitely go down this season. They seem to be in a total mess from top to bottom.

Brian: To be honest even allowing for injuries one look at the benches and it's clear neither Everton or Villa have very good squads mostly comprising has beens and flashes in the pans. Everton down. Villa bottom 6 at best.

Villa go close to getting that second goal again.

Emiliano Buendia tries to be too clever in the box to find space for shot and it allows the Everton defence to get a boot in and clear the ball.

    Villa threaten!

Danny Ings gets in down the right but his low pull-back - designed for Ollie Watkins - is hammered away by Mason Holgate. A second Villa goal surely ends this contest.

I see all the negative stuff from the Everton fans but, as a Villa fan I am very nervous. We need another goal to settle us down.

After that initial push at the start of this half, it has all gone quiet again in an attacking sense for Everton. Will Rondon provide the impetus they need?

Anon: Relegation reset? That done Leeds, Wednesday, Forest etc a world of good didn't it? Everton spent big to try and break the top 4 and it didn't work. Seems like a lot of fans think Everton should know their place and accept it.

Mark: Some nonsense comments about Everton needing relegation. We survived one relegation battle, hardly annual, and Lampard is trying to rebuild which takes time and is hampered by injuries. Let's see how Everton do when the window closes and injuries ease before writing them off.

David: No club ever 'needs' relegation. If Everton were to go down it might be years before they come back up.

Everton do make a change, though.

Dwight McNeil departs and on comes Salomon Rondon to give the Blues a proper striker to hit.

This would be a disaster for Everton.

They lost Ben Godfrey to injury last weekend, Abdoulaye Doucoure has limped off this. Losing a player they only signed this week would be cruel.

John McGinn looks to curl an effort into the far corner.

His shot hammers into the head of Conor Coady, who immediately drops to the floor. Play is halted. It looks more like a leg issue for Coady, rather than his head.

Anon: I'm glad I'm not a Everton fan. Imagine paying to watch this garbage every week. I could get eleven blokes off the street and we could beat them easily.

Nick: Anthony Gordon is arguably Everton's best fit attacking player. But he isn't a centre forward. He is a winger. It seems Lampard would rather waste his best attacker by forcing him out of position than play Rondon and allow Gordon to play wide. It's inept management.

Chris: When you play 5-5-0 is it really surprising you struggle going forward? Incredibly defensive line-up.
