Former Crystal Palace striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

After the recent soundings coming out of Old Trafford, I like this one.

I think Casemiro fits and is needed. He is better business than what I have been hearing of Manchester United doing of late. I think he will be a shoe-in to start. A defensive midfielder playing in the right position can only help the centre-backs at the club.

He will bring an identity to the United midfield which has been a mixed bag. He will sit in and protect a weak back four. I just wonder about his motivation to join Manchester United.

When you look at Manchester United and players joining them, for Casemiro to be stepping down in class at the moment from Real Madrid to Manchester United, there has to be a reason.

And I don't think there's any other reason than security and money at his age. He is an organiser, he is not flash and it fits. It is quite apparent that it is needed. They have nobody else at the football club of his ilk.

  8. Schmeichel 'not sure' about Casemiro signingpublished at 18:49 British Summer Time 22 August 2022

Man Utd v Liverpool (20:00 BST)

    Peter Schmeichel
Former Manchester City goalkeeper on Football Focus

I have to be honest, I'm surprised because Casemiro hasn't been mentioned at all throughout the transfer window. At no point was that name mentioned. I think he's been absolutely fantastic for Real Madrid - I've been impressed with how well he's played.

He had an injury, came back and really tightened up the back but what he did at Real Madrid was to sit in front of the back four and just give them protection. They had Toni Kroos and Luka Modric to give the ball to and he just stopped.

If you're a number six for Manchester United you are also supposed to drive and take part in the game. Ten Hag wants to be in possession of the game, he wants to control the game and he wants to put pressure on the ball.

That's a big difference from La Liga and even playing in the Champions League to playing every week in the Premier League so I'm surprised that this player is being mentioned for that amount of money and also on those wages, at that age when we don't know if he can do the job.

I'm not sure. Maybe sign someone who we know can play in the Premier League just for now and then maybe in the next transfer window, we go and sign the players like Casemiro who are also exciting to watch. For me, it's an open question - I don't know.

  9. Man Utd move not about money - Casemiropublished at 18:45 British Summer Time 22 August 2022

Casemiro said his impending move to Manchester United is not motivated by money as he bid an emotional farewell to Real Madrid on Monday.

The Brazil midfielder, 30, said he is joining "the biggest team in the world" after a nine-year spell with Real.

United have agreed to pay up to £70m to sign Casemiro on a four-year deal which would make him one of the top earners at the three-time European champions.

"If it was about money I would have left four or five years ago," he said.

"Those people who think that are wrong, they don't know me at all.

"The club has always treated me very well. It's my decision, my path."

Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane looks like he's had a trim more suited to getting out in the centre of midfield. He looks ready for this match although by the sounds of it he's not convinced his former club are.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Keane says: "They have to turn up and start better than the last couple of games. They need a huge performance and we've not seen that so far this season. They have not turned up.

"Defensively they are all over the place. Erik ten Hag has got to make changes. This team needs to show some sort of personality and character but they don't seem to have it in them."

  11. Players need to 'look at themselves'published at 18:38 British Summer Time 22 August 2022

Man Utd v Liverpool (20:00 BST)

    Nedum Onuoha
Former Manchester City defender on Football Focus

The running that Man United did after the game on the Sunday [against Brentford], they were supposed to have a day off and the distance they ran was in relation to how short they were to Brentford.

That wasn't for fitness, that was to make a point. That's to feel the difference that Brentford had over Man United in that game. It's to set the standard and say you have to match the opposition. It's the Premier League.

United have a good team on paper and they're underperforming. Are the players playing to their maximum capacity on a week to week basis? At this moment I don't think they are and, for Ten Hag, it's highlighted that fact.

One thing which always goes without saying is that you compete and you match the opposition. They're fundamentals and if you look at the sides at the top now, they're doing that on a regular basis.

The difference in terms of that distance is ridiculous and it is unacceptable and I think Ten Hag tried to make that point. Ultimately, if he gets a reaction from them that's great but they need to look at themselves. As much as the club isn't necessarily heading in the right direction, they can get better on the field.

  12. 'You don’t have to talk about anything when the attitude is not right'published at 18:34 British Summer Time 22 August 2022

Man Utd v Liverpool (20:00 BST)

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag says the attitude of his players was to blame for the heavy 4-0 defeat at Brentford.

He said: "I think I made myself clear, I was definitely not happy. You can talk about football philosophy, but the basic stuff has to be good.

"That starts with the right attitude, a fighting attitude on the pitch. I didn’t see that from minute one. You have to bring it every game.

"It starts with yourself. Act as a team, follow the rules and principles and work hard. If you do that you get confidence.

"It’s normal as a manager that you see a game, you have a plan, a way of playing and then you check how the game went, then you analyse and you see what is wrong and what is good. Obviously a lot went wrong, but you don’t have to talk about anything when the attitude is not right.

"It’s not difficult to motivate this team because my experience with them from the start of the season is they work really good on the training pitch."

On whether playing Liverpool next is the perfect game for United to bounce back in, he said: "Every game is different but the philosophy and the plan will be the same.

"We work from game to game. Now it’s Liverpool. Obviously we know what is going on when you play Liverpool, especially when it is Manchester United. So of course you have to be ready."

  14. Man Utd in bad shapepublished at 18:26 British Summer Time 22 August 2022

Man Utd v Liverpool (20:00 BST)

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

Two seasons ago, this fixture had to be postponed when fans got into the stadium as a protest against the Glazer family escalated way beyond the scope of security put in place to deal with it.

Given United were on a 13-match unbeaten run on their way to a second-placed Premier League finish - and also went on to reach the Europa League final - it is little wonder that there are fears around this particular rematch.

United have not been in as bad a shape as this for nearly 50 years, when they actually were relegated from the top flight.

Organisers have publicised the pre-match protests. It is hard to imagine that on a weekday evening during the holiday season, the attendance will be a big one.

United as a club need the protests to be peaceful but there will be a lot of nervous people until the game actually starts.

When Manchester United hosted Liverpool last October, there was a negative atmosphere after their previous Premier League game ended in a 4-2 defeat at Leicester.

Ten months on and Liverpool's return to Old Trafford will coincide with another demonstration of supporter unhappiness after a heavy 4-0 defeat at Brentford.

The Brentford defeat moved the Manchester United Supporters Trust to release a strong statement at the way the club is being run.

"As we've always said, a fish rots from the head. And the ultimate responsibility for the terrible state of our football club must lie with its owners, the Glazer family," it read.

Boss Erik ten Hag said: "They just have to deliver. That is my obligation and them. When I talk about players, and I want to emphasise, I'm in the same boat as well. When we are not in the right attitude, I'm not as well. We win together, we lose together."

It has been a breath-taking start to this Premier League season and we saw evidence of that on Sunday as Leeds humbled Chelsea and Newcastle held champions Manchester City.

But the levels of drama will be cranked up a notch as a team in total chaos come up against their bitter rivals, who are in need of some joy themselves.

Manchester United take on Liverpool at Old Trafford tonight, amid the backdrop of a huge fans' protests from the home supporters.
