  2. 'Anthony can be a great winger'published at 23:07 British Summer Time 30 August 2022

    FT: Leeds 1-1 Everton

    Everton

Everton boss Frank Lampard, speaking to BBC Sport: "A fully deserved point. They are flying here. A high-pressure team and crowd. When they get together they can create phases that are very difficult for you and we nullified that today. Defensive discipline and tactically, players followed the game plan. they want to play through you, win balls back and create chances. We gave them one or two and one was scuffed into the net. In the second half we can probably win the game with the quality of chances we had.

"We want build a squad here that can be versatile and change at different times. We had to look at putting more pressure on the ball by having a man further forward. We had those options. Now we are settled, I know we have not won yet but it is hard to play through us. the next step is can we be more of a threat in possession, but you have to build from the bottom. I have no problem with what the boys have done tonight. I thought they were great."

"I talked to Anthony [Gordon] a lot about getting in goal scoring positions and scoring. It is the difference between a good and great winger. He has every potential to be a great winger and that means double figures every season. You have to put pressure on yourself, get in those positions, practice them, train them and be calm when you get there. It is a big step forward for him to score two in two. He can take that forward."

"We have had Neal [Maupay] for four days. He should be able to play the game as far as I am concerned. We registered him on Friday but it wasn't registered because it is a bank holiday weekend. There is nothing we can do about it. It id disappointing. If the matchday is tomorrow he plays but because of TV, they tell us what days to play. We need him. The striker option and different type of player to offer something different.

"We worked hard this window to make a positive step with it. There were things we needed to do in terms of the type of players we bring in and their spirit. There are also younger players with development in them. We are not desperate but if we can help the squad we will try to do that in the next few days."

James: Look at the money Chelsea have spent on defence and can’t keep a poor team like Southampton out of the goal.

Sulaimon: This Chelsea team is absolutely ordinary. No striker, no creative midfielder. Very Ordinary.

Paul: Bizarre that Chelsea have spent so much money on defenders when they are crying out for attackers. Yes they needed to replace Rudiger but the issue was scoring goals last season and still is.

  4. 'Marsch knows Bamford importance'published at 23:01 British Summer Time 30 August 2022

    FT: Leeds 1-1 Everton

    Stephen Warnock
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

Leeds have missed Bamford, and Marsch knows the importance of keeping him fit for the season.

I did think Gelhardt did an extraordinary job, but he got tired. Bamford gave them a different option, you can play the ball up higher to him.

  5. 'I saw a confident team fighting to get back into the game'published at 22:56 British Summer Time 30 August 2022

    FT: Leeds 1-1 Everton

    Leeds United

Leeds boss Jesse Marsch, speaking to BBC Sport: "It was too slow, given that Everton from the very beginning tried to kick balls away, take their time on goal kicks. The referee should have managed that better. It is an entertainment business. Thirty-five thousand people didn't come here to watch a goalkeeper take a minute over evert goal kick. However, we made life difficult for ourselves by going a goal down. We wanted a better start and hold on the game. I saw a team that was confident and fighting and moving and doing all they can, action after action, to get back into the match. As disappointing as it is not to get three points, I think we are making progress with out group. I really like our players and team. More work to do but we will keep pushing."

On Rodrigo: "He dislocated his shoulder so the question is how much damage was done in that action. Sometimes it can be a week, sometimes it can be two months depending on the damage. He feels better, which is a good sign but we need a scan. I thought Patrick Bamford did well and held up some balls and combine. I also think Joffy [Gelhardt] played well. It is not always easy to take a player in and then out. We like those guys and have quality up front. We will find ways to be more dangerous.

On transfers: "Let's see. It is down to the wire here. There may be some opportunities for us and we are trying to survey and evaluate what is out there. Let's see what happens."

  6. 'We weren't at the level'published at 22:54 British Summer Time 30 August 2022

    FT: Fulham 2-1 Brighton

    Brighton & Hove Albion

More from Brighton manager Graham Potter to BT Sport: "Not worthy of anything from the game. Fulham were the better team for the first 30 minutes. We got back into it a little then a bad start to the second half. Credit to the boys they responded well and pushed but Fulham deserved the win.

"We got a little bit into it as the game went on but we weren't at the level we have been at recently. Overall, it was more the level of performance than the goals that we can do better on.

"It's football. There's an opponent there as well. We probably missed Danny Welbeck a little bit up front. The team has done well over a period of time. That was our first defeat in 10 games. In the end they took the 2-0 lead and it's difficult away from home. No complaints about the result. They deserved it on the night."

  7. 'Gordon can hold his head high'published at 22:50 British Summer Time 30 August 2022

    FT: Leeds 1-1 Everton

    Stephen Warnock
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

It speaks volumes about Gordon's character, we spoke earlier about what sort of person he is to get his head down and not let things effect his performances.

Will he still be at Everton at the end of the window? I'm not sure, but he can hold his head high.

  8. 'Strange and disappointing'published at 22:50 British Summer Time 30 August 2022

    FT: Leeds 1-1 Everton

    Everton

Frank Lampard on Neal Maupay's absence: "It is paperwork, but is the rules as such. It was signed on Friday afternoon and they call it three non-working days because of the bank holiday. This is the Premier League, the game is being beamed around the world. We signed a player four days ago and played a game in the meantime. If matchday was tomorrow he could play. It feels strange and disappointing. It denies us options in the game. They had an injury and brought on a centre forward and then brought on another later in the game."

  9. 'You saw Gordon's worth to the club today'published at 22:47 British Summer Time 30 August 2022

    FT: Leeds 1-1 Everton

    Everton

Everton manager Frank Lampard, speaking to BT Sport: "We could have got three points. Really good spirit and organisation from us in a really tough place to come because of the way they play. The pressure is high. You saw the result they got against Chelsea. They were one goal down against Wolves in the first game of the season. Momentum can build in this stadium very quickly. We played well. The spirit, the defensive organisation, the break aways. We had real good chances in the second half to win the game.

"I think they [Leeds] became obsessed with the time. We went 1-0 up and there were a couple of times the ball was in the crowd still and their bench was talking about time. I don't know if they want Jordan [Pickford] to sprint into the crowd and get the ball back. I don't get it. I think it became an obsession. The crowd get on it and try to put pressure on the referee. I understand it. Goodison Park can be a tough place to come. It became a side issue because there were times when we had to get the ball. Strange."

On Anthony Gordon: "I don't have to worry about him anymore. You saw his worth to this club. Attitude amazing. I said from the day I joined the club that I want more goals from him. He has everything. Attitude, ability, speed and it was a great finish. We are playing games at the minute without an out-and-out striker. We need that output from our wingers. Now we have a striker for the next game and we get stronger.

"From where we were last season, in a real dogfight and needing to turn a lot around in terms of spirit. This season, for people to expect us to play beautiful football and fly up the table, but you have to build from the bottom. I know we have lost some games but we are hard to beat, not conceding. We maybe lose this game last year. Whether you play five or four, you get the discipline right. We will get braver and better on the ball and have a nice balance to us."

For the past few years, the league has been in need of a shakeup. The results so far have been so difficult to predict, with hard work getting great results against expensively bought teams, and shock results on a weekly basis. If the season carries on like this, with genuine surprises and real competition in every game, this season is going to be something special.

Leeds boss Jesse Marsch has confirmed Rodrigo has dislocated his shoulder.

"They popped it back in and seems to be ok. He will have a scan," he says.

  12. 'We are only growing from here'published at 22:43 British Summer Time 30 August 2022

    FT: Leeds 1-1 Everton

    Leeds United

Leeds midfielder Tyler Adams, speaking to BT Sport: "After going down in the first half, it was not the start that we wanted. It is important that we are able to grind out results and, at minimum, get a point out of that. It is frustrating in the first half when they are already trying to kill time, especially when we want to play a high-tempo game. It is important then that we stay mentally focused and get the goal.

"It is important that he [Luis Sinisterra] is able to get minutes now and you saw there a little glimpse of what he is able to do. He will be an important player for us going forward.

"Rodrigo is a dangerous player for us and has scored a bunch of goals. I hope he is alright. I didn't quite see what happened, I think it is his shoulder.

"This is a learning process for us - a lot of new guys coming into a new league and trying to adapt. It is important that we can pick up points early on in the season. We are only growing from here."

Hope: I’m so surprised Southampton won tonight. We were unbelievable and totally together as a team, finally looking united. Haven’t seen us play like that for a long time, all positive things. Chelsea might not have been great, but full credit to Ralph and the boys.

  14. 'Pleased with the direction we are going'published at 22:40 British Summer Time 30 August 2022

    FT: Leeds 1-1 Everton

    Leeds United

Leeds boss Jesse Marsch, speaking to BT Sport: "We know how dangerous they are on the counter. I thought we did a good job of managing it in many moments, but it only takes one the other way to make the game more difficult. I just saw the offside goal [Demarai Gray] and it is really close, really lucky that didn't count. But what I see with our team is one that is growing and getting better. We can be good with the ball and against the ball and we can be good in transition moments. Obviously, we need more goals. But I am pleased with the direction we are going and the players we have and the look of our team.

On Everton time wasting: "Yeah that was terrible. It is classic. For me, you can see when the players of Everton are kicking the ball away in the first minute of the game. It is clear they want to take the energy out of Elland Road. This is still an entertainment business and I wish the referee had handled that bit a little better. After it was 1-1 it became entertaining, but it was too late. The referee had the chance to affect the game and did not take advantage of that."

On Luis Sinisterra: "We really like him. I also thought Marc Roca and Tyler Adams were excellent in the middle of the pitch. Jack Harrison was dangerous all night. Joffy [Gelhardt] came in in a difficult situation. We are hopeful Rodrigo is not too bad. It is one of those where the shoulder pops out. Pat [Bamford] came into the game and was dangerous. So yeah, I really like this team."

  15. 'Out and out defenders'published at 22:36 British Summer Time 30 August 2022

    FT: Leeds 1-1 Everton

    Stephen Warnock
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

That Everton back line needed communication. You could see the organisation from Coady and Tarkowski, how tough it can be but how easy you can make it for the players around you.

Coady is a great talker, and Tarkowski knows how to place players.

They are out and out defenders - Tarkowski wants to throw his head on everything. Those two will be so key, and around the training ground too.

  16. 'Surprising if Gordon goes now'published at 22:36 British Summer Time 30 August 2022

    FT: Leeds 1-1 Everton

    Tony Pulis
Former Stoke manager on BBC Radio 5 Live

There is a price for everybody, but the most important thing for Everton is to stay in the division. If Everton sell now, it is very late to replace him [Gordon]. I would be surprised if he goes now.

No disrespect, but some of the money being paid for players this window is extraordinary.

Mark: Teams lose, even great ones. But the way Chelsea are getting beat is worrying now. It’s not a case of having no answers, Tuchel isn’t even asking the right questions at the moment.

Seth: Tuchel used Lampard's signings to win the UCL and since then his signings haven't worked as expected. Lukaku is a prime example. The season will be long for Chelsea at this rate.

  18. 'We are learning, getting better'published at 22:32 British Summer Time 30 August 2022

    FT: Leeds 1-1 Everton

    Everton

Everton defender Conor Coady, speaking to BT Sport: "It is always tough at Elland Road. You are facing the crowd too. The atmosphere is always fantastic and we knew had to match that. They gave us some stick for what we were doing but you have to manage the game. It was hard graft and the boys gave absolutely everything. We are a little bit disappointed having had the lead and you want to keep that from a defensive point of view but it was fair result in the end and something to build on.

"It is not a deliberate tactic [slowing the game down]. It is the situation you find yourself in. We are grown men and have been playing football a long time so you find yourself in a game that might need slowing down. We got a fantastic goal early so do you keep going full press and give them what they want? they are areal transition team. The reaction to losing the ball is incredible. They are probably the best team at doing that in the league. You have to take that away from them. At times we did that but it is always going to tough second half. You have to stay tall and brave. It is tough at the moment. We are getting better, learning new things. It is hard to go from where we were last season to winning games straight away.

"It is not about systems, it is about keeping the basics of our play. We want to be compact and organised. We want to be able to play a team off the park, but these are so in your face and are really good at what they do. We are picking up points and we are learning.

On the weekend's Merseyside derby: "It is huge for us. We need to recover and make sure we are firing. We know we have Goodison behind us and it is important that we use that."

    FT: Southampton 2-1 Chelsea

    Tony Pulis
Former Stoke manager on BBC Radio 5 Live

Chelsea were good until Southampton scored, then they took a step back.

In the media we always talk about the top teams, but Southampton deserve a lot of credit. They were by far the better team, more energy, more purpose. Che Adams murdered the two centre backs, bullied them.

Chelsea were very open. When Tuchel took over they went from an open side to one which looked very solid. They did not look like that today, it was a poor performance.

  20. 'I have to keep working to score many more'published at 22:28 British Summer Time 30 August 2022

    FT: Leeds 1-1 Everton

    Leeds United

Leeds midfielder Luis Sinisterra, speaking to BBC Sport: "I have been working very hard for this moment. We worked for the three points but we couldn't take it. It feels nice to score my first goal in the Premier League. I have to keep working as I am doing. It is amazing and I have to keep working to score many more.

"Everton played really good. They find the goal early so they drop and then wait for the counter. It was difficult for us to find the net. In the second half we could do it. I think we deserved a bit more, but we kept working."
