  1. Will Mitrovic add to his tally?published at 18:45 British Summer Time 30 August 2022

    Fulham v Brighton (19:30 BST)

One man who is in terrific form is Aleksandar Mitrovic.

The Fulham striker already has four goals in as many appearances this season.

He has had more efforts at goal than anyone else so far in the league and his goal in the 2-1 defeat to Arsenal at the weekend was his 100th for Fulham.

His record against Brighton is decent too - three goals in his last two Premier League starts against them.

Patrick Vieira says Crystal Palace need to sign new players before the transfer window closes, but has refused to comment on rumours that Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher is set to re-join.

So far Palace have signed four players in Sam Johnstone, Malcom Ebiowei, Cheick Doucoure and Chris Richards.

Gallagher impressed during a loan spell with the Eagles last season.

"We need players and we will try to bring in those players," Vieira said. "The club know what we need and there are people working to see if that can happen or not.

"It is difficult to talk about players who are not at the football club. Conor is a Chelsea player. Until Chelsea say otherwise, there is no point us thinking about what may be possible."

  3. Willian close to Fulham movepublished at 18:42 British Summer Time 30 August 2022

Former Brazil midfielder Willian is close to returning to the Premier League with Fulham.

The ex-Chelsea and Arsenal player had been playing with Corinthians.

However, the 34-year-old had his contract cancelled with the Brazilian club after claiming he and his family received death threats on social media.

A medical is scheduled with Fulham and, if necessary, the deal could be completed after the transfer window has closed given Willian's contract status.

Willian won five trophies, including two Premier League titles, during his seven-year spell at Chelsea before joining Arsenal on a three-year deal in 2020.

  4. The fans' point of viewpublished at 18:41 British Summer Time 30 August 2022

    Fulham v Brighton (19:30 BST)

    Brighton & Hove Albion

Scott McCarthy, We Are Brighton:, external

It was incredible to see Brighton top the Premier League - even for four minutes - after Pascal Gross scored against Leeds.

Some 25 years and 12 days earlier, the Seagulls had scraped a draw with Macclesfield at the bottom of Division Three. It was Brighton’s first 'home' game at Priestfield, attended by 2,236 supporters willing to make the trip to Gillingham.

To suggest then Albion would one day lead the top-flight table - albeit for 240 seconds - would have been considered ridiculous. As one famous Brighton fan’s music says: "We've come a long, long way together."

Though brief, the Seagulls' time at the top indicated what might lie ahead. Could Brighton be – whisper it – top-four contenders?

Probably not. Injuries will bite, form will tail off and others have deeper squads and greater financial resources. And there may be late bids for the likes of Adam Webster and Moises Caicedo.

But something special is being built. Over £100m has been banked in player sales this summer, with just £15m spent - yet Albion still look impervious.

Manchester City were the last team to beat the Seagulls on 20 April. How high might they soar? Well, to the top again for a bit longer if they win at Fulham, courtesy of Arsenal and City not playing until Wednesday.

After that, who knows? But these are arguably the best times Brighton have ever had. Strap me in.

  5. 'Death, taxes... and Leeds being beaten at Brighton'published at 18:40 British Summer Time 30 August 2022

    Leeds v Everton (20:00 BST)

Adonis Storr, The Roaring Peacock, external

There's three things you can be sure of: death, taxes and Leeds losing away to Brighton.

It is now no win in nine attempts over 11 years at the Amex. It's the sort of string of results that might lead fans to think the place is cursed.

There's plenty of evidence to suggest that football fans believe in superstitions. A survey by Hisense before last year's Euro 2020, , externalfound that 48% of fans have superstitions around supporting their team.

And Leeds' greatest ever manager - the late, great, Don Revie - was notorious for superstitions.

He famously recruited fortune teller Gypsy Rose Lee to lift a curse he thought had been cast on Elland Road. And when Leeds played Stoke on 12 September 1970, it was the first time - and, until Saturday, the last - United's outfield players turned out in orange. The Peacocks lost 3-0 and Revie apparently decided the colour was cursed and ordered the kit to be burned.

Jesse Marsch doesn't seem superstitious, more tactically focused, and if United beat Everton on Tuesday, then Saturday's game will be swiftly forgotten.

But perhaps the next time the Whites travel to Brighton, in lieu of burning the kit, they could bring along a fortune teller.

  6. An encouraging start for Fulhampublished at 18:38 British Summer Time 30 August 2022

    Fulham v Brighton (19:30 BST)

It's been an encouraging start to the season by Fulham.

After holding Liverpool to a draw on the opening weekend, they did the same at Wolves before beating Brentford 3-2.

A narrow 2-1 defeat to Arsenal has been their only blemish so far but they have shown pedigree in the Premier League.

They have four points from their first two games at Craven Cottage this season - it took them six home matches to reach that tally the last time they competed in the top-flight.

Can they continue their good form tonight?

History says that this game is unlikely to be a thriller.

Both games last season ended in 0-0 draws and this could become the first fixture in English top-flight history in which the first three encounters end goalless.

  8. Team news - Zaha returns for Palacepublished at 18:32 British Summer Time 30 August 2022

Brentford boss Thomas Frank also makes three changes to the Bees side that drew 1-1 at home to Everton.

Keane Lewis-Potter, Shandon Baptiste and Vitaly Janelt come in, replacing Josh Dasilva, Christian Norgaard and Yoane Wissa.

Brentford XI: Raya, Hickey, Zanka, Mee, Henry, Lewis-Potter, Mbeumo, Jensen, Baptiste, Toney, Janelt

Chelsea have been doing things the hard way so far. At times they've looked superb (much of the game against Spurs), at others they've been pretty woeful (the loss at Leeds). Money has been spent - new owner, same deal - and there are signs the new lads are finding their feet, while Saturday's comeback win with 10 men will do no harm to confidence.

As at Leeds, tonight's trip to Southampton could well be a tricky one for the Blues. The Saints will bring the same Red Bull-inspired high-octane, big pressing energy to the table as they look to bounce back from the 1-0 home loss to Manchester United.

The last game sees the return of Frank Lampard to a ground he last visited for a big play-off semi-final win in 2019. He's no longer Derby boss, but now Everton's gaffer and boy could he do with a repeat of that 4-2 victory tonight.

Leeds are quietly confident after an encouraging start to a campaign few could predict the direction of with much confidence. Whites fans would love nothing more than to get one over on Lampard in a this contest between the two sides that survived relegation last season at Burnley's expense.

What a start to the season Brighton are enjoying. The Seagulls look solid, smart and silky when they need to be under Graham Potter. They are the highest flying of our eight teams in action this evening and will reach the very summit of the division with a win at Fulham. They look

The Cottagers have four points to their name - a respectable start for a newly-promoted team - and have picked up all of those at home, from games against Liverpool and Brentford. They also have an in-form Aleksandar Mitrovic, who they will look to hit with the ball as quickly as possible. They will be no pushover.

Palace and Brentford have both had highs and lows already in this fledgling campaign. Tonight will be an interesting barometer for both as they look to build further on the base set by good first top-flight campaigns under Patrick Vieira and Thomas Frank respectively.

OK, so who had 30 August in the 'first Premier League managerial casualty of the campaign' sweepstake?

Scott Parker being the first to get the axe may not surprise many, but four games in does feel ridiculously early, despite him and his former side having being hit for nine at the weekend.

The Premier League is a ruthless environment, though, and it waits for no man, even those in natty cardigans. The games come thick and fast as sides set the groundwork for what kind of season they are set to have.

Bournemouth aren't back in action until tomorrow, but tonight we have eight sides with wildly differing and fluctuating ambitions and expectations. There are sure to be more twists and turns as we take on the first midweek round of fixtures of 2022-23.
