    • After a 3-3 draw in August 2014, Newcastle have only scored more than one goal once in their subsequent 13 Premier League meetings with Crystal Palace (W5 D4 L4), netting 11 goals in total in this run.
    • Crystal Palace have picked up one point from their past three away league games, despite opening the scoring (and leading at half-time) in each one. No team in Premier League history has led at half-time and yet failed to win four consecutive away games.
    • After netting in his first Premier League appearance for Newcastle United against Liverpool, Alexander Isak is looking to become only the second Magpies player to net in his first two games for the club in the competition, after Les Ferdinand in August 1995.
    • Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha has scored 13 goals in 20 Premier League games so far in 2022, as many as he had in his previous 45 appearances. It’s his best return in a single calendar year in the top flight.

  3. Howe warns his side of no help from Premier League teamspublished at 14:40 British Summer Time 3 September 2022

Newcastle v Crystal Palace (15:00 BST)

Eddie Howe has warned Newcastle the rest of the Premier League will do them no favours as they attempt to upset the established order.

Two days after finding themselves in Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp's firing line following a dramatic conclusion to their clash at Anfield, head coach Howe revealed the big-spending Magpies' efforts to further bolster their squad as the transfer window ran down were thwarted by domestic clubs making life difficult for them.

Asked if that had been an issue with the club increasingly perceived as a threat as they pursued the likes of Leicester's James Maddison, Leeds midfielder Jack Harrison and Arsenal's Ainsley Maitland-Niles, the 44-year-old replied: "Yes, I would say so.

"That was definitely something we felt in the market. Domestic clubs didn't want to be seen to be helping us. We'll have to take that, that is part of where we are at the moment.

"We have certainly found there is no-one there ready to do us a favour. It's the narrative regarding us that has changed. If there is anything domestically, teams will put their price up if it is Newcastle.

"There is a real feeling of us internally knowing we are against everybody else. That is healthy and I would embrace that."

  4. 'We've got character and team spirit'published at 14:39 British Summer Time 3 September 2022

    Everton

Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, speaking to BT Sport: "Another unfortunate goal disallowed for VAR but it has very tight - we're building, we've got that character and the team spirit is pushing us on. We haven't got a win yet but we've been tough to beat.

"I thought I had a good game today - I helped the lads and you need lots of leaders on the pitch and I think we've got that. We didn't get three points but we got a draw and we can keep building.

"They were good - Allison made some wonderful saves as well but that's our job, to help the team when we're needed. It's my first clean sheet of the season and that's where we have to keep building and get better and better.

"Four draws but it's hard work and commitment - if we keep building and get stronger then we'll get the wins."

  5. 'It feels like we lost two points'published at 14:38 British Summer Time 3 September 2022

    FT: Everton 0-0 Liverpool

    Liverpool

    DijkImage source, Getty Images

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk, speaking to BT Sport: "They had a couple of opportunities and an offside goal. They had two good saves from Alisson, I think we had a little more [chances] than that. We should have won in my opinion. It feels like we lost two points.

"We wanted to stay calm. They wanted to be aggressive, feed the crowd. We had to keep our cool and play quickly from side to side, because the spaces were so massive between the lines. Sometimes we did that, sometimes we didn’t and created unnecessary problems.

"We changed system a little bit [at half-time] but it’s still the same principles. At times it went well, but at times we could have done better. It feels like we lost points here but it’s still early in the season. We have to stick together, focus on winning games and take it step by step.

"A clean sheet also wasn’t a bad thing at this stage."

  6. 'Van Dijk challenge a big talking point'published at 14:37 British Summer Time 3 September 2022

    Maz Farookhi
Commentator on BBC Radio 5 Live

A big talking point from the second half was the challenge from Virgil Van Dijk on Amadou Onana. It was high, on the ankle rather than the foot. Although he was only given a yellow, Peter Reid on my left certainly thought he should have been more heavily penalised. He would say that, of course, but we have seen them more severely punished before.

Newcastle v Crystal Palace (15:00 BST)

    Chris SuttonImage source, BBC Sport

    Sutton's prediction: 2-1

I like Palace under Patrick Vieira and I like Newcastle under Eddie Howe.

Newcastle really took the game to Liverpool. I didn't realise Alexander Isak was going to play in that game and he took his chance well and got his goal.

Newcastle are at home. They beat Nottingham Forest on the opening day and ran Manchester City really close and I think they will have a bit too much for Palace.

Wilfried Zaha scored a brilliant goal against Brentford and they do have some really good players but Newcastle will edge this.

  8. 'Bees will gamble on youth'published at 14:35 British Summer Time 3 September 2022

    Brentford v Leeds (15:00 BST)

Thomas Frank says Brentford will continue to “gamble” on young talent at a time when transfer prices have “exploded”.

The Bees had a productive transfer window by buying Hull winger Keane Lewis-Potter, Bologna full-back Aaron Hickey and Sampdoria forward Mikkel Damsgaard, while also pulling off free-transfer deals for Thomas Strakosha and Ben Mee.

"The areas we wanted to improve the squad, we ticked those boxes," said Frank.

"It was a classic Brentford window. We got two free transfers and three young talents that we are very pleased we have got.

"We are willing to take a gamble on young players.

"We definitely have a limit to how much we can and will pay. If you look at the numbers spent this window it has completely exploded off the scale.

"The Premier League is a different world compared to all other leagues."

Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford speaking to BT Sport: "We didn't get the three points but we got the draw and can start building now.

"I made some good saves, Alisson made some good saves, but that's our job.

"It's my first clean sheet of the season and another building block for the team to get better.

"We have four points from four draws, but if we keep building we will get stronger and get the wins."

  10. Marsch on 'really good challenge' at Brentfordpublished at 14:31 British Summer Time 3 September 2022

    Brentford v Leeds (15:00 BST)

Jesse Marsch is anticipating a "really good challenge" as he returns to the ground where his Leeds side clinched Premier League survival on the final day of last season.

Needing a positive result to stay up, Leeds won 2-1 at Brentford Community Stadium but, despite the good memories, Marsch is expecting a completely different game this time round.

"Brentford are such a difficult opponent to prepare for because they have really good variability in how they play," he said.

"Last time we played them was very different - this is a new season, a new moment. The last game of the season, even though they lost they were able to celebrate staying up and perhaps weren't totally focused on the game.

"This time, they certainly will be."

He also praised his opposite number Thomas Frank who led the Bees to promotion from the Championship before establishing them in the top flight.

"Frank has done an incredible job and you see how his team play with such continuity and clarity," he said.

"I watch what they do and think about what I can steal from them, especially on set-pieces.

"They have some really good talent on the pitch and a good club who have done a really good job of moving up the ranks."

    • Brentford have scored in each of their past eight Premier League games – it’s their longest scoring streak in the competition, and longest in the top-flight since a run of 24 between October 1938 and March 1939.
    • Leeds scored a 90th-minute goal in each meeting with the Bees in the Premier League last season, with Patrick Bamford earning them a 2-2 draw at home, and Jack Harrison scoring the winner in a 2-1 away victory.
    • Ivan Toney has scored 49 goals in 95 appearances for Brentford in all competitions, at least 32 more than any other player at the club since he joined in 2020. The last player to net 50 for the Bees was Clayton Donaldson (53 between 2011 and 2014).
    • Leeds have conceded five goals in their five Premier League games this season – they’d conceded five in their opening game last season, and averaged 2.1 goals conceded across the whole campaign.

Josh Earl: What a save from Pickford at the end. He's been immense.

Diego Pele: Was Mane the glue that bonded the @LFC, external front three? It sure looks like it.

Bob Moss: I get the feeling Liverpool will struggle to get into the top four. Something is missing this season.

  13. Sutton's predictionpublished at 14:27 British Summer Time 3 September 2022

    Brentford v Leeds (15:00 BST)

    Chris SuttonImage source, BBC Sport

    Sutton's prediction: 1-1

Leeds beat Brentford at the end of last season as they avoided relegation to the Championship. Brentford have started this season well and they came back again against Crystal Palace to draw late. The Bees will be absolutely fine in terms of Premier League status because they are streetwise and resilient, and they will cause Leeds one or two problems.

Jesse Marsch has gone in and assessed the playing squad at Leeds. Dan James joined Fulham on deadline day and he might be a bit of a loss for them so you maybe worry about the strength in depth a bit but they got some good early signings in and they've had a decent start. I can see this one ending in a draw.
