Arthur Melo says signing for Liverpool is "a dream" after joining Jurgen Klopp's side on a season-long loan.

After completing the switch from Juventus, the 26-year-old midfielder said: "I’m really, really happy to be here wearing this great shirt with this famous badge that represents so much in world football, it’s a dream.

"We talked a lot, and our ideas and visions were a good fit so I’m sure it was the right choice. I’m really happy and highly motivated to continue living my dream on the pitch and giving my all in a Liverpool shirt.

"Liverpool have a wonderful history in football. I’ve played against Liverpool, I know what it feels like to be in the stadium with the fans behind them.

"I was with the opposition and now I’m on the right side so I’m really excited. It’s a massive club with a great manager, great players. As I said before, it’s a dream to be here."

Touted as one of Brazil's great prospects, Arthur Melo has since lost some of his "magic", but a move to Liverpool could kickstart his career and solve the Reds' midfield dilemma.

The 26-year-old arrives at Anfield on a season-long loan from Juventus to ease the Premier League club's growing injury concerns, with Jordan Henderson, Thiago Alcantara, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all currently absent.

Manager Jurgen Klopp hoped to bring in a new midfielder this window and said the one he wanted got away, as Aurelien Tchouameni joined Real Madrid in a deal reportedly worth up to £86m.

Liverpool have also been repeatedly linked with a move for Borussia Dortmund's England international Jude Bellingham next summer, and Klopp has said he "would like to risk a bit more" in the market, but the Reds have a careful transfer strategy.

Some less obvious deals have turned into hugely successful signings and since 2015, when Klopp arrived, Liverpool have the lowest net spend of the perceived big six - a £744m outlay in that period has been offset by £493m in player sales, according to football data website Transfermarkt.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is "pretty sure" new signing Darwin Nunez will not lash out again if targeted by Everton players on Saturday.

The Uruguay striker, 23, is available for the Merseyside derby after serving a three-match suspension.

Nunez was sent off on his home debut last month for headbutting Crystal Palace defender Joachim Andersen.

"Will it never happen again? I don't know, but I am pretty sure nothing will happen in the next game," said Klopp.

After Nunez was sent off for just the second time in his career, Klopp spoke to the former Benfica forward about not letting opposing defenders antagonise him.

"He is a wonderful young man but he has emotions as well," Klopp said. "He made a mistake but we didn't speak for the full 15 days about it, telling him 'you have to calm down'.

"How we want to think in these situations is that we pay back with football," the German coach added.

"If Darwin plays then he has to be ready for these things. When a player is talking to you a lot or is really physical, then he is not in his own game, and he [Nunez] has to use these kind of moments as well.

"If the other one is too busy wanting to distract him, you just have to use it from a football point of view.

"For the Crystal Palace game, when the defender is searching for this constant contact, then go from there and you decide when you start the movement."

So Arthur Melo does have his clearance and appears on the bench.

A couple of big calls from Jurgen Klopp in there, resting Firmino and Robertson and throwing Nunez back in up top.

He seemed pretty certain his firey new striker will be fine in the atmosphere today when asked about it in the week.

  6. Team news - Maupay makes debut, Nunez returnspublished at 11:30 British Summer Time 3 September 2022

    Everton v Liverpool 12:30 BST

Everton manager Frank Lampard makes just one change to the Toffees side that drew 1-1 at Leeds in midweek.

Striker Neal Maupay is handed his club debut at the expense of Dwight McNeil, who drops to the bench.

Fellow new arrival Idrissa Gueye is also among the Everton substitutes.

Everton XI: Pickford, Patterson, Coady, Tarkowski, Mykolenko, Davies, Onana, Iwobi, Maupay, Gray, Gordon

Subs: Begovic, Keane, Allan, McNeil, Coleman, Gueye, Vinagre, Rondon, Mills

Jurgen Klopp makes three changes to the Liverpool team that claimed a last-gasp 2-1 win at home to Newcastle.

Darwin Nunez returns from suspension, while Fabio Carvalho and Konstantinos Tsimikas are also handed starts.

Roberto Firmino and Andy Robertson are joined on the Liverpool bench by recent arrival Arthur Melo, who has received international clearance in time for the short trip to Goodison Park.

Liverpool XI: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, van Dijk, Tsimikas, Elliott, Fabinho, Carvalho, Salah, Nunez, Diaz

  8. Everton seek first winpublished at 11:20 British Summer Time 3 September 2022

    Everton v Liverpool (12:30 BST)

Everton's last dip into on-field action was at Leeds, where they engaged in some similar time-wastery antics as Newcastle but got away with it and claimed a draw.

Frank Lampard's lads remain without a win this campaign, though, and sit just above the relegation zone as one of three teams fore whom three points from five games is most certainly not enough.

However, unlike last Tuesday, they will have striker Neal Maupay available to them, with no bank holiday to hold up his registration any further. They also have some other new faces to chuck in the mix today as they go in search of what would be a very sweet first league win of the season.

  9. Carvalho and Elliott are signposts to the futurepublished at 11:16 British Summer Time 3 September 2022

Fabio Carvalho celebratesImage source, Getty Images

Fabio Carvalho claimed the headlines and the adulation as he was swamped by team-mates in a corner of Anfield Road after giving Liverpool the latest of late victories against Newcastle United.

Carvalho, the summer signing from Fulham who celebrated his 20th birthday on Tuesday, has become an instant Liverpool wildcard in a start to the Premier League campaign that has not reached the heights that brought them to within touching distance of four trophies last season.

He has made an impact every time he has figured this season, but nothing as dramatic as when he emerged from a crowd scene in the 98th minute to pounce on Newcastle's failure to clear a corner and complete Liverpool's comeback from behind to win 2-1.

It led to wild scenes on the pitch, in the Anfield stands and in the technical area where the angst which had been building all night, with Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp in a state of almost permanent fury, boiled over.

    Everton v Liverpool (12:30 BST)

The last time we saw either of the two Merseyside clubs in action, Liverpool were scoring with the last kick of the game to seal a comeback from 1-0 down and beat Newcastle.

It was tetchy affair, with the Reds feeling the Magpies had engaged in a fair amount of gamesmanship to eat into the clock.

As our chief football writer Phil McNulty - who is at Goodison today for us - said after the game at Anfield, it was a win partly dragged kicking and screaming from the jaws of defeat by two young stars - Harvey Elliott and Fabio Carvalho.

  13. The new ladspublished at 11:05 British Summer Time 3 September 2022

Everton v Liverpool (12:30 BST) - the Blues could finally have Neal Maupay up top, with James Garner and Idrissa Gueye possible inclusions in midfield. New Reds signing Arthur is not expected to get international clearance in time.

Brentford v Leeds (15:00) - Leeds left it very late in the window to sign striker Willy Gnonto, who is unlikely to feature.

Chelsea v West Ham (15:00) - Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang is injured, but Wesley Fofana is available for Chelsea. Could we see Lucas Paqueta for West Ham?

Newcastle v Crystal Palace (15:00) - Surely Alexander Isak gets a second run-out for the home side.

Nottingham Forest v Bournemouth (15:00) - I mean, Forest could field two sides of summer signings. The Cherries will have a new fella in the dug out in caretaker boss Gary O'Neil.

Tottenham v Fulham (15:00) - Might Richarlison start? Deadline-day Fulham signings Willian, Dan James, Carlos Vinicius and Layvin Kurzawa await their debuts.

Wolves v Southampton (15:00) - Sasa Kalajdzic, could make his Wolves debut, as might midfielder Boubacar Traore. Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Duje Caleta-Car are two possible Saints debutants.

Aston Villa v Man City (17:30) - The Erling Haaland show continues. Manuel Akanji is unlikely to be rushed by City, but Villa have the option of Leander Dendoncker and Jan Bednarek.

  14. Hey big spenders...published at 11:02 British Summer Time 3 September 2022

So, nearly £2bn was spent by Premier League clubs in the transfer window just gone. Just let that sink in. Two... billion!

This is an eye-watering, record-breaking amount for a single window, during which nine of the 20 top-flight clubs spent in excess of £100m. It is 67% higher than the previous summer's total of £1.1bn.

There will be plenty of the big-money buys that helped clubs reach that figure on show today. Many of them will do impressive things, having already wowed us in the opening four games of the campaign.

For £2bn, though, you'd expect nothing less!

So where are the big performances going to come today? There is a bumper eight fixtures to choose from. I'll lay out when these games are coming at you, along with a little heads up about potential new signings on show.

  15. The window is shut, time to crack onpublished at 10:59 British Summer Time 3 September 2022

Right, that's your lot, the window is shut. You're all just going to have to make do with what you've got until January.

Thursday's deadline day means that Premier League clubs no longer have the option to bail themselves out with yet more ludicrously-priced footballers. It's all on their current squads to lay the groundwork for a successful or not so successful season. Well, until January at least, when all the madness starts again.

It leaves us with questions that need answering. Like 'Will all these signings keep Tuchel in a job?', 'Will practically no signings keep Brendan Rodgers in his?', 'I'm sorry, how much for Antony?', 'How many left wing-backs is too many left wing-backs?'.

We may get a hint about some of those today. We'll also get a bit of clearer idea about the direction of travel for 16 of the top-flight's 20 clubs.
