  2. 'I will be watching MOTD for the first time in four weeks'published at 20:38 British Summer Time 3 September 2022

    Aston Villa 1-1 Man City

    Aston Villa

More from Steven Gerrard on the Aston Villa equaliser: "Leon [Bailey] has much more quality than me. He has been really good from the first day of pre-season. He has come back, he is healthy, his body is good. We have been managing his minutes at times because of his injuries last year.

"Yes, he deserves that goal and he will get a lot of credit and lot of headlines, but this was very much a team effort.

"I have just said to the players that we need to use it to build on. We need to learn from the few moments from what we got wrong but take an awful lot from what we did right against one of the best teams in the world."

On Philippe Coutinho's disallowed goal: "He blew the whistle too early twice. He blew the whistle when Ezri Konsa challenged Ederson. Why blow the whistle? Why not wait and use VAR if there is an issue? And he blew the whistle too early for Phil's thing.

"I haven't watched Match of the Day for four weeks for obvious reasons, but I will be watching it tonight to see what those experts have got to say because I thought he was too soon on the whistle."

On building on the point against Manchester City: "It should only feel like more than a point if we go and back it up. We have got a full week to prepare for what is going to be another tough game against Leicester but the players have just put in a really strong performance against a top opponent so we have to take belief, confidence and courage from that but we need to back it up next week and we need to start putting some more points on the board."

  4. 'We deserved to take something from this game'published at 20:26 British Summer Time 3 September 2022

    Aston Villa 1-1 Chelsea

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "I am really proud of the performance. It is a really strong, positive point against a world-class opponent. They have got so much quality throughout the team and a world-class manager.

"To go 1-0 down you are obviously fearing the worst but inside our dressing room today I said to the players that no-one on the outside gave us any hope or chance today, so we tried to use that in our favour for motivation and the players were highly motivated to try to take something from the game. We deserved something from the game.

"We set up to be more pragmatic. We wanted to take some space away. They have got so much quality up top and we wanted to nullify certain areas of their game. We did, we frustrated them for the majority of the first half and a lot of the second.

"What we didn't do well enough in the first half was keep that ball a little bit better on the regain and hurt them enough, but we reacted really well to going a goal down.

"I thought Ollie Watkins and Leon Bailey were sensational. They gave us energy and time to breathe, by keeping the ball and bringing us up the pitch.

"We certainly deserved to take something from this game with the way we set up and what we put into the game."

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "It was a good game, we conceded almost nothing in the first half. We struggled a little bit to create chances but we were in complete control.

"Second half we break the game and we were better. We were trying to score the second goal and we defended the ball badly on our right side and they equalised.

"They didn't create anything, it was just one shot.

"We were not precise in our game in the final third. A lot of players not fine in the simple things and that is why sometimes this happens, but it's OK, one point and we keep going.

"We are human beings, we are football players and this happens."

On missed chances: "Erling Haaland was involved in the game, he had touches and chances. We had two or three incredible chances in the first half and in the second half after 1-0, we hit the post from Kevin [de Bruyne] and had another one from Kevin and another from Phil [Foden]. So we had enough chances to score a second and a third and fourth. But in the Premier League, when you are 1-0 anything can happen. We didn't defend that one situation and we draw."

On Manchester City's defending: "It was one action. When the other team only has one shot on goal then you have defended really well."

On the competition in the Premier League: "It's not my first season here. I know how difficult it is."

S_a_M_2022: This result [at Villa Park] has made tomorrow’s game at the Emirates [between Arsenal and Manchester United] even more big. United looking for fourth straight win, Arsenal looking to maintain winning start & could open up four-point gap at top.

Great result for us Arsenal fans, if we can beat United tomorrow we're four points clear of City and maintain a great start to the season, I have everything crossed for tomorrow.

Might just as well be rid of VAR as far as the English Premier League's concerned! Overly inconsistent and often glaring blunders or totally ludicrous decisions have made it a lot more trouble than is tolerable. Let's deal with just the issue of subpar quality of on field referring without it being compounded by VAR.

    T George

VAR couldn't intervene on the Coutinho goal as the referee had already blown the whistle and the City players had already stopped. The assistant should have waited until play had stopped!

Joe Willock looks like he was about to head the ball in and then Crystal Palace defender Tyrick Mitchell pushes Willock in the back. Willock collides with the Crystal Palace goalkeeper and Mitchell actually heads the ball into his own net. The fact that Mitchell pushed Willock into the goalkeeper - how have Newcastle not been awarded a goal or penalty for that? It's absolutely bonkers.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola speaking to Sky Sports: "Good game. We conceded just one goal from one shot on target in 90 minutes. We were not precise in our final third touches and our simple things, especially in the first half. We had chances to score a second when the game was in our hands but we didn't.

"We were better after the goal. But we were just not precise enough in the crosses, we missed a few situations and that's why we could not score.

"They [Villa] defended well, they are well organised and physical. The way we defended we created enough chances to score goals, we defended well apart from one action.

"[Kyle] Walker injured, he asked to be substituted. I don't know why."

On season so far: "Many games to play - it's always tough, every game is tough home and away, we know this."

  15. 'We have to use this and grow our results'published at 19:53 British Summer Time 3 September 2022

FT: Aston Villa 1-1 Man City

    Aston Villa

More from Villa boss Steven Gerrard to Sky Sports: "The game plan was similar the other night and we got ourselves in the game at Arsenal but conceded too soon. They are going to have moments and no one can play perfect against City but we got the big moments right today and this performance was about the team, guts. Listen to the fans reaction, it doesn't matter if I'm proud but that they are.

"We didn't do much wrong against West Ham, I've had to tweak a few things and look at myself behind the scenes, it's not just about players, it's what I can do better. Do I have to sacrifice things for the bigger picture? Sometimes you have to take a few of the nice bits of your team away to put some blood and thunder in the team and some fight. We had that in abundance today.

"I'll always take the hits, that's my job, we have lost too many points this season and we need to do things slightly different. I'm proud of the players but there will be no pats on the back today because it is a draw. It's a big draw but it's still just a draw.

"I need to lead this team - I knew this job was huge and I know our run of form hasn't been good enough. We've been close to that performance but the moments have gone against us, they have been kinder to us today but that's got to be the start of us today. We have to use this and grow our results."

    Aston Villa

    Steven GerrardImage source, Reuters

Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard speaking to Sky Sports: "Very proud - the players have come together today. They put an incredible amount of effort into the game, followed instructions. City are always going to have moments and we had to ride our luck, this is what we wanted out of the game and this is the game plan we gave them.

"Sometimes you've got to put more legs in the team, sacrifice certain technical levels, you have to take some space away and people in the team who can gain the ball and move forward with speed. We went with Leon [Bailey] and [Jacob] Ramsey because we felt we would have areas to break into, we did it better in the second half but we wanted to be more organised because of [Erling] Haaland and others capable of finding space.

"We praised the players after the first half for out of possession stuff but said we need to be more aggressive on the regain and believe in ourselves more but to concede against City and the players didn't sink I was really happy with the response and the body language."

What happened with the Coutinho goal? "I saw a legitimate goal but obviously I am biased. The referee did the same at the other end with [Ezri] Konsa on the keeper, he was desperate on the whistle which went against us twice in the game."

Paul: Officials are disgracing our league yet are never held accountable. they’re incompetent! @FA_PGMOL needs a massive overhaul because they’re a joke who defend this lot no matter what. Some officials would be sacked for their level of incompetence in any other job!

Morgan Applegarth: That the offside call against Coutinho moments before he tucked it away is scandalous. The footage clearly shows he was onside. Where were the VAR’s lines of doom? Of course we’ll here nothing from @FA_PGMOL.

We have heard David Moyes and his frustration. He has been very critical of refereeing, the use of VAR and sending the referee over to the monitor. I am with David Moyes on that, the goal should have stood, it wasn't a foul on Edouard Mendy. This is what infuriates fans up and down the country when they see decisions like that. An absolute shocker.
