  5. 'We have been hard to beat'published at 16:49 British Summer Time 18 September 2022

    Everton 1-0 West Ham

    Everton

Everton boss Frank Lampard to BBC Sport: "It's a win that has been a little while coming. We probably have deserved it somewhere this season already but it hadn't come. We have been hard to beat recently but we haven't had that clinical edge in front of goal but today we had that.

"It feels like a win that is deserved because it was coming. We are working for it and the lads are owning it. The new players are settling in well. We are playing a different shape to what we were and today we showed little bits and we will get better. The big thing is the three points to give confidence going into the international break.

"It was amazing to stay up like we did last year but we knew we needed to be more stable defensively in this league. The players that are coming in and the ones that are coming in are doing well. We are far from the finished article but not conceding too many goals is something we should be proud of."

On Neal Maupay's winning goal: It's a fantastic goal. A goalscorer's goal. the first touch is clinical and it's not easy to keep it tight and get your shot away. You rely on that feeling of a striker and we maybe draw that game if Neal isn't there."

  6. 'We've lost the momentum of last two years'published at 16:42 British Summer Time 18 September 2022

    Everton 1-0 West Ham

    West Ham United

West Ham boss David Moyes to BBC Sport: "I think we didn’t deserve anything because of how we played in the first half. But in the end we deserved a point.

"It was more to do with how we didn’t perform. We didn’t do well enough with the ball, a lot of poor decisions in the final third. When we had a couple of half-sniffs towards the end we couldn't take them."

On whether playing on Thursdays has an impact: "I’d love to say no... We want Thursday, Sunday. I wish it was Wednesday, Saturday because we'd be in the Champions League. But if you look at results [of other teams in previous seasons] Thursday, Sunday results can be very difficult. Today it was more to do with how many times we gave the ball away. Everton did the same in the first half too."

On their run: "Not so good today but it’s been better [recently]. We played well against Chelsea and Tottenham, a couple of games in Europe we’ve done OK in. We won at Villa. We were doing OK. A result like this makes it look like you’re not. I couldn’t say we deserved a victory but I don’t think there was a lot between the teams.

"I don't think we’re that far of. But we’ve lost that momentum we had for a couple of years. We need to get it back quickly. Today the bulk of our players played the last couple of years and that's the disappointing thing."

  7. 'The players who played last year are down on their level too'published at 16:38 British Summer Time 18 September 2022

    Everton 1-0 West Ham

    West Ham United

West Ham boss David Moyes to Sky Sports: "We picked up after they scored but before that not very good. The first half was a poor game all round but we didn't get the result.

"We had a game on Thursday night and we are trying to put new players in and find out a bit about them. But it was mainly the players I know about that let me down today with play overall.

"The players who played last year are down on their level as well. We have shown signs we were getting back to it but I don't think we did today. When we got anything in the final third it was nearly always the wrong decision. We probably missed a few big chances.

"We have to keep going and keep putting the work in, the players have responded well in the last two or three years and there is no reason they cannot reach those heights again. If you're not scoring lots of goals you have to make sure you are a really good defensive team. We have got a good enough team but we need to start showing it, that's for sure."

As an Everton fan, I was surprised to see West Ham set up just to contain for 60 minutes. They have good attacking talent who could have caused problems in the first half.

  9. 'That's why we brought Maupay in'published at 16:35 British Summer Time 18 September 2022

    Everton 1-0 West Ham

    Everton

Everton boss Frank Lampard to Sky Sports: "The reality is we’ve worked hard this season and deserved more. Our fans are amazing.

"To hold on, fight, dig in, we showed a lot of parts. We’ll get better. This team has to be a reflection of the fans. The passion of the fans, they demand things and they’d better see them. We have players who can deliver that, characters.

"Hopefully our football can get even better. Hopefully the fans are happy. Nobody is getting carried away. At the moment there's a decent feeling round the place."

On Neal Maupay: "We brought him in for that reason. He's a proven Premier League scorer. We played some games early season with false nines, trying to find solutions.

"There were times in games with that bit of clinical finishing, we would have got more points. How close he kept that first touch and how quickly he shot is why he scored.

"You can see we’ve added a lot in the dressing room. We have to be hard to beat."

  10. Postpublished at 16:32 British Summer Time 18 September 2022

    Everton 1-0 West Ham

    West Ham United

West Ham midfielder Declan Rice speaking to Sky Sports: "When you look at the table before the game, with two teams on the same points, you know it's a big game even though it's early in the season. We had our chances but we couldn't capitalise and so far in the Premier League that has been a problem of ours.

"In the first half we turned the ball over so many times, and at this level, you can't do that. It doesn't matter if you lose the ball but it's the same mistakes again.

"We have had these moments a lot in the Premier League and it will start to drop soon but we need to keep going. We just have to keep playing and keep believing and results will come our way.

"Us as players, me included, we know we can't be where we are in the Premier League. When you look at the table it's horrible to look at. We don't want to be there, the last two seasons have been a positive for the club but it's up to us as players to get the results with the squad we have."

Andy: West Ham have only won 5 of their last 21 Premier League games, three goals in seven games this season, and somehow Moyes seems to be escaping any pressure or scrutiny. Unimaginative, inflexible and frustrating.

Chris Newton: Moyes sticking with the same team time and time again, and not making any changes until 60+ minutes, needs to change. Devoid of any attacking threat at the moment.

  13. 'We have been playing really well'published at 16:25 British Summer Time 18 September 2022

    Everton 1-0 West Ham

    Everton

Everton midfielder Alex Iwobi to Sky Sports: "We have been playing really well. The performances were good, it was just about getting the result. It's good to get a win going into the international break.

"I didn’t get off to a great start [at Everton]. I always have the mindset to prove people wrong. The manager allows me to expres myself."

  15. 'I needed that goal'published at 16:18 British Summer Time 18 September 2022

    Everton 1-0 West Ham

    Everton

Everton goalscorer Neal Maupay to Sky Sports: "It means a lot. The win is the main thing for us. We’ve been playing well and it was just a matter of time. I'm happy for the win and the goal and hopefully we can build on it.

"Always the first touch is the key [for his goal]. We’ve got very good players in midfield and the wings. They make the difference. I have to be there to finish. I’m just happy for the team. It’s been coming. We had a very good week of training and we deserved it.

"I wouldn’t say I feel under pressure [to score]. I know my job I have to score. That’s why they brought me in. I needed that goal as I haven’t played much last month. I wasn't playing for Brighton towards the end. It was only my second game of the season. I needed this goal. I’m here to help. I trust my team-mates to put me in the right position to score."

    Everton 1-0 West Ham

Everton have kept consecutive Premier League clean sheets. They did not manage that at all in the whole of last season.

Carlo Ancelotti was in charge the last time that happened.

  17. 'Everton better with Gueye'published at 16:12 British Summer Time 18 September 2022

    Everton 1-0 West Ham

    Jonathan Woodgate
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

There were two different teams in that second half. Back-to-back clean sheets for Frank Lampard’s side now and they’re unbeaten in six. They look a different side with Idrissa Gueye in the team.

Everton end a run of seven Premier League matches without a victory. This was their longest wait for their first league victory in a season since 2010-11.

  19. Postpublished at 16:09 British Summer Time 18 September 2022

    Everton 1-0 West Ham

With four points from seven games, West Ham have made their worst start to a Premier League season since 2016-17 (also four points).

Only in 1973-74 have the Hammers had fewer points at this stage of a top-flight campaign (three – assuming three points for a win).
