Leicester secured their first win of the season as they hammered Nottingham Forest to dump their local rivals on the bottom of the Premier League and pile the pressure on manager Steve Cooper.

James Maddison scored twice and created another for substitute Patson Daka, with Harvey Barnes curling home a superb effort as Brendan Rodgers' side recorded their biggest home win since December.

For Forest, this first top flight East Midlands derby since 1999 was a night to forget.

Cooper's side never recovered from conceding twice in as many minutes not long after striker Taiwo Awoniyi had struck a post when clean through on the home goal.

The Forest fans bellowed their support for Cooper as they sang songs of defiance with the game gone and their team slipping to a fifth straight defeat in a single season for the first time since January 2004.

However, after celebrating a long-awaited return to the Premier League after a 23-year absence, owner Evangelos Marinakis did not sanction the outlay on 23 summer signings in a belief Forest were about to go straight back down.

Cooper must hope his boss shows him more patience than former Huddersfield manager Carlos Corberan, who was sacked after 11 games at Marinakis' Greek club Olympiakos earlier this month.

  3. 'Tonight was a season-changing game for us'published at 22:52 British Summer Time 3 October 2022

    FT: Leicester 4-0 Nottingham Forest

    Leicester City

Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers to BBC Sport: "It's been too long [without a win]. We should have won before now but tonight was a season-changing game for us. We knew a win would give us a shot in the arm but we got the performance as well. The intensity was outstanding.

"I'm really happy for the players and I'm really happy for the supporters as they have suffered. This was for them.

"It would have been easy for the supporters to turn up in trepidation, especially against their local rivals, but their backing was amazing from the off and they created a great atmosphere.

"It was a wonderful night for them and they deserved it as it has been a really challenging season."

  4. 'It's tough at the moment'published at 22:46 British Summer Time 3 October 2022

    FT: Leicester 4-0 Nottingham Forest

    Nottingham Forest

More from Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper to BBC Sport: "We are going through difficult moments you normally look at in pre-season and we are having to go through that process it in the most difficult league in the world. It's tough at the moment, I won't shy away from that.

"I'll believe in them until the end. I will never say they are not good enough as that will have a negative affect. But at same time we need to be much better.

"This is a fresh challenge for us. Some of the guys have only met each other these last couple of weeks. That's the realism of the situation and something we have to deal with. At the moment we are getting punished because of periods in games where we are not a team and key moments as well.

On the backing of fans: "I'm really grateful. They have been incredible since my time here. I'm not thinking too much about myself. I'm thinking this is another poor result for this club I love, and that's where my mindset is. It's frustrating but we have to get over it."

On whether his future is in doubt: "I completely understand the situation and the question and respect it 100%. But my concern is we have lost another game for this club, not my own situation because I care more about the club more than my personal circumstances. I refuse to criticise the players as a group as it a fresh challenge."

On whether he will still be in charge for Forest's next game against Aston Villa: "I will be planning [for the game]".

  6. Maddison speaks of England World Cup 'ambition'published at 22:39 British Summer Time 3 October 2022

    FT: Leicester 4-0 Nottingham Forest

    Leicester City

Man of the Match James Maddison, who has one England cap, to Sky Sports: "It feels good and it was very much needed. Confidence has been a bit low in the camp but everything felt right about the game tonight.

"We've worked long and hard in training. It's a unique game for the fans and supporters because it's a derby, so it's nice to send the fans home happy."

On causing trouble for Forest, he said: "My strength is being between the lines, so we worked a lot on me being able to pick up on those pockets.

"I think that's something I've improved on massively tactically. But I can't just run around wherever I want, the Gaffer allows me freedom but not that much!

"You can see on my face just how much it means. That first goal was crucial for us."

On missing out on an England call-up: "It's been a weird position for us at the bottom but I feel at my most confident at the minute. Playing for England is my ambition. An opportunity at that level is one that I hope will come my way at some point and I would love.

"I have a self belief that I'm a top player and that I can be in that category. I'll keep working hard and I need to have the mindset of forcing my way in. But I think there could be a space for me so I'll just keep producing performances like tonight and doing it for Leicester. Then we'll see."

  7. Maddison deserves England place - Rodgerspublished at 22:33 British Summer Time 3 October 2022

    FT: Leicester 4-0 Nottingham Forest

    Leicester City

More from Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers, speaking to Sky Sports.

On whether James Maddison should be in contention for the World Cup: "It's such a shame for the country and for him himself [that he's not in the squad]. You can see his talent and his performances at this level in the last 18 months. James is an absolutely brilliant player and I hope he can somehow get into the team because if you want creativity and personality then he's an absolutely outstanding player. He's improved his defensive ability too.

"He's a great, great lad and to work with him every day is an absolute joy. He's very focused and he's just got so many qualities, so I think he's at least deserving on being in the squad.

On pushing on now, Rodgers added: "When you don't win games it comes on to you. We had a horrendous summer, that's the reality of it and that continued into the start of the season.

"I just had to remind the players of their ability and continue to support them. They have bags of resilience. We just needed to turn that corner tonight and we did that. We have to back it up against Bournemouth now."

  8. 'We've got a lot of technically gifted players'published at 22:31 British Summer Time 3 October 2022

    FT: Leicester 4-0 Nottingham Forest

    Leicester City

Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers to Sky Sports: "It's been too long [since they last won] but I thought we were excellent tonight, with our intensity and pressing in the game.

"It was a great night for the players and brilliant for the fans. I said if we could get a result tonight then we could push on.

"We've got a lot of technically gifted players but you can't win football matches without the desire to win the game

"In key moments in other games we haven't defended well but we have tonight and we've kept a clean sheet, which is also very important."

  9. 'We were nowhere near good enough'published at 22:28 British Summer Time 3 October 2022

    FT: Leicester 4-0 Nottingham Forest

    Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper to BBC Sport: "It is another disappointing result, there's no doubt. We weren't good enough tactically in the first half. We came with a plan and we were nowhere near good enough in the duels which was disappointing.

"We should have gone 1-0 up, we had the chance of the game up until that point. But we are not getting good results at critical moments and again we had a spell that took the game away from us.

"I thought we did better second half, and again we had another 1v1 where we could do better and maybe the game would have changed a bit. But we are not taking those critical moments and we are at a level where it really matters

"Without sounding too soft it is really difficult to be too critical of the group because it is a completely new group and we are finding out about ourselves, the job.

"The players never gave up. I'm not questioning their effort or work rate. There were times where I felt we could have been more competitive but I'm not looking at these lads and thinking they don't care. They are just a really fresh group trying to come together."

  13. 'We were desperate for that win'published at 22:10 British Summer Time 3 October 2022

    FT: Leicester 4-0 Nottingham Forest

    Leicester City

Leicester goalscorer Harvey Barnes speaking to Sky Sports: "It was so enjoyable. After last season the result [4-1 loss versus Forest in February] in the FA Cup it made it a little bit more special. A derby game, with the season we have had, we were desperate for that win.

"We've played some good football this year, scoring a lot but also conceding a lot. So the clean sheet tonight is probably as enjoyable as the goals.

"We spoke how important it would be to get a quick start. It was a derby game so it was going to be feisty. An early goal helps and gave us confidence for the rest of the game.

"That clean sheet was important in the end. We know we can keep the ball out of the net and we have the quality going forward to score goals.

"There have been a lot of mistakes. We are still playing some good football at times but also switching off, but the signs are there. It has been a long time coming and hopefully this is the start of a good run of results for us. Getting that first win will take a weight off everyone's shoulders."
