On the evidence of this season so far, Everton will likely sit in deep here, frustrate the home side and look to hit Newcastle on the break.

They do just that in the opening minutes and spring forward before Alex Iwobi is dispossessed.

Is Mohamed Salah back to his best? Certainly felt like it on Sunday.

The Liverpool forward, playing more centrally against Manchester City, was the matchwinner in the 1-0 triumph for the Reds and was a constant menace to the away defence.

To say Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was happy with what he saw from the Egyptian would be an understatement.

"Mo played an exceptional game. Absolutely outstanding. The goal was world-class," said Klopp.

"Apart from that, good on the ball, a constant threat in behind, working extremely hard, an outstanding performance, honestly. It was really good."

    West Ham beware.

This feels like a big night for Darwin Nunez. It's not been the easiest of starts for the 23-year-old who was sent off in his first Premier League game at Anfield back in August.

But there have been signs in the last few games that the Uruguay talent is starting to settle. There is no doubt he causes panic in defences but will he add to his two goals in his past three appearances?

With Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz out for the foreseeable, a firing Nunez will be a welcome sight for Jurgen Klopp.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin's integration back into Everton's first team is complete, for the moment anyway, after a "freak knee injury" at the start of the season.

Could he be a late inclusion for the World Cup? When asked about it on Tuesday, manager Frank Lampard said that starting games for Everton was the priority.

He said: "If he was fit and playing regularly, then he'd be making a great case [for England] of course, so it's step by step for us at the minute.

"Dominic is an England squad player, he's been in that squad many a time and played. Hopefully we can see what he can deliver for us. And then of course, he gets himself into that [England] question."

Asked if there was still time to make Gareth Southgate's squad, Lampard added: "I don't know. It's not my decision, my focus is getting him in condition and playing well for us."

    • Everton are winless in their past six midweek (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday) Premier League away games (D4 L2), having won each of their past five in a row before this.

Eddie Howe is trying to take the positives from Alexander Isak's injury, despite ruling out a return for the striker before the World Cup.

Newcastle's record signing played only three times for the club before sustaining a thigh injury on international duty with Sweden.

Howe said: "Alex we don’t think we’ll see again before the World Cup. Unfortunately he has had a setback on his thigh.

"It’s frustrating for him as a new player coming to a new league and club. You want to make an instant impact and he did that in the team. In those first few games I thought he was excellent for us.

"He looked like he was acclimatising really well. He picked up the injury when he was away with Sweden and since then has been frustrating for him because he looked really, really good. He did a lot of work to get fit and as always with muscle injuries they are unpredictable. You can feel great one minute and succumb the next and that’s what happened to him.

"It’s a real shame because he is desperate to make his mark here but he is young, he’s got a long future ahead of him here and we need to protect him and make sure he comes back good.

"The beauty of this if you are trying to look for a positive is that we will look for his injury to heal and we will get a mini pre-season with him.

"When he joined us he joined with a very minor hamstring problem so even when he played against Liverpool he wasn’t at 100% fitness, so hopefully this gives us an opportunity to get him to his peak physical condition so he can show his athletic capabilities.

"He is an incredible athlete and in my opinion he will do really well for us for a long period of time. This is an important time now to bed him into the team, to get to know the players, the city and then come back firing."

    Newcastle v Everton (19:30 BST)

Newcastle United battled it out with Manchester United over the weekend in a fiery stalemate at Old Trafford. Sixth against fifth is how it stays in the Premier League, but can Newcastle stay there until the World Cup break and beyond?

Eddie Howe’s Magpies have the best defensive record in the league this season, only conceding nine goals and with a solitary loss (that controversial 98th-minute defeat by Liverpool). The style of play is an impressive watch now as the high-pressing and high-intensity system is working a charm, even without star player Allan Saint-Maximin and record signing Alexander Isak.

To think of how well the Geordies are performing now with key injuries is a testament to the coaching staff and to the squad, who are giving the badge 110% at every opportunity. When key players return, Newcastle could be a serious threat to the big six.

Maintaining this energetic and ambitious approach to games is crucial before November’s winter break, but you wouldn’t put it past the Toon Army to crash the party, even this season.

  14. 'You defend from the front and we are all protecting each other'published at 19:18 British Summer Time 19 October 2022

    Newcastle v Everton (19:30 BST)

Callum Wilson says consistency has been key to Newcastle boasting the Premier League's best defensive record this season.

The Magpies have conceded just nine goals in 10 games.

When asked how Eddie Howe's side have gone about being solid at the back, Wilson told the Footballer's Football podcast: "Hard work really. Being consistent in the drills that they are doing, the mentality that they have got.

"Consistency is the key and that has been key to defending. We obviously made signings within that and have Sven Botman and Kieran Trippier.

"The defence is doing well and we have a good goalkeeper, but you do defend from the front. We are all protecting each other, all working hard, closing gaps and when you are a team and pulling in the right direction you start seeing results and that is what’s happening for us at the moment."

  15. Saints ready to march on?published at 19:17 British Summer Time 19 October 2022

    Southampton v Bournemouth (19:30 BST)

Is Ralph Hasenhuttl under pressure? Feels like he's always oscillating between doing a fine job with limited resources and not getting enough from his squad.

The Austrian saw his team end a run of four straight league defeats with a hard-earned point against West Ham on Sunday.

Can that kickstart an upturn in form?

"It was important that we gave a positive performance on the weekend, we took something and we can go now and concentrate on tough games coming up and in the short term," the Saints boss said.

"It was a good side we played against and we have to take it, because every point is important for us, especially after the last losses we had.

"We now have a lot of games coming up where we have to go for the win, for the three points.

"But we are coming up against a team who are in form, unbeaten in six games with a massive turnaround (in form), so it is the same challenge like it was on Sunday."

Handing the reins to Gary O'Neil has proved an inspired decision by Bournemouth.

Since the former Middlesbrough, Portsmouth and West Ham midfielder took over as the Cherries' caretaker manager, following the sacking of Scott Parker in August, Bournemouth have not lost.

Tonight they can equal the club record of seven consecutive Premier League games unbeaten, set from December 2017 to February 2018, if they avoid defeat against south coast rivals Southampton.

After two wins and four draws, O'Neil said: "The sort of perfectionist in me wishes we had won a few more of them, but we have been on a good run.

"It doesn't mean anything going into the next one, but we have been on a good run.

"What I have said from the start is the boys need to give a certain level of performance in every moment of every game and in all six games, in every minute of it, they have given that."

After a slow start, West Ham are starting to build momentum.

The Hammers travel to Anfield hoping to extend a five-game unbeaten run in all competitions, having won four and drawn one of their past five games.

"Anfield is probably, in football terms, as hard a place as you can go in the world to try and win a game, for anybody," says Hammers boss David Moyes.

"You probably saw that on Sunday when the best manager in the world has found it difficult to go there and get a result, so that’s why it’s difficult for us all."

The behaviour of Premier League managers towards officials has been under sharp scrutiny again.

That is after Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was sent off against Manchester City on Sunday for shouting at an assistant referee - on the same weekend where Merseyside Youth League games were postponed , externalamid ongoing issues with referee abuse.

Klopp has escaped a touchline ban for tonight's visit of West Ham, with David Moyes saying he is glad the German will be allowed to be in the opposite technical area.

"Part of this job is you want to play against the best, compete against them and Jurgen is up there with them all with what he has done for Liverpool over the years," said Moyes.

"His actions are part of it, we are really het up and if you were in that position you would probably feel the same.

"We have all got great respect for referees and the work they have to do, I hope in their way they will understand that, for 90 minutes and a bit longer we might lose our heads a little bit."
