Former Manchester United defender Patrice Evra: "Everyone is different. I want to stay on United performance, not to protect Cristiano Ronaldo. Maybe he needed some treatment? I don’t want to find an excuse. We have to stop talking every day about Ronaldo."

    Alan Shearer
Former England striker on Amazon Prime

I understand Cristiano Ronaldo's frustration but look at the bigger picture and the team put in a really good performance. The manager had a big call to make and it turned out to be the right decision.

It is a difficult situation, we are talking about best player in the word, the best player we have ever seen. It is tough but makes things difficult for the manager.

  5. 'Today it was a team performance'published at 23:05 British Summer Time 19 October 2022

    FT: Man Utd 2-0 Tottenham

    Manchester United

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag tells BBC Sport: "We had some more really good performances like Liverpool and Arsenal but this was the game from start to the end we were really good and I told the team it was very enjoyable to watch.

"The plan was to get in those spaces, but you need switch of play, dynamic and get their backline back. You have to get the spaces for the shots and it was good to see the transfer of the gameplan.

"What was first, chicken or egg? The Spurs team is a great team so far, I have analysed them and it was difficult to play them. That is why I am so happy with the performance and it was good to see."

On Fred: "I want to get the best out of all my players but that is to do with team performances and the way of playing, rules and principles to get the philosophy in. Today it was a team performance then individuals can show themselves."

On Ronaldo walking down the tunnel early: "Today we celebrate this result. Of course we think about Saturday and another big game. We have to prepare really well and the rest we deal with tomorrow."

  6. 'We struggle to play at a high level'published at 23:00 British Summer Time 19 October 2022

    FT: Man Utd 2-0 Tottenham

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham boss Antonio Conte, speaking to BBC Sport: "We have to be honest and say that United deserved to win. From the start they showed much more than us. I try to analyse after the game with my players because |I like to be really honest and in this season we have struggled a lot every time we have played games at a high level, against Chelsea, Arsenal and United. It means we must continue to work and to improve ourselves and to see if it is enough to play at this high level. There is only one way to try to work. The approach of the game, we were a bit scared and we showed this. I do not like this. The table is good for us but in our mind and the mind of our players we need the ambition to play this game in a different way, with more personality, to not miss stupid passes.

"In my experience, in my career I have seen you can improve a lot until the last day you finish your career. My players and myself, we can improve a lot. We need to be humble and to continue to work and show this level is also for us."

Spurs just couldn't get near United in the centre of the pitch. They just couldn't get a foothold in the game at any point. Man United were on top of them and they gave the ball away so many times. Conte looked subdued towards the end because Spurs were so poor on the night.

  8. 'Two different levels'published at 22:53 British Summer Time 19 October 2022

    FT: Man Utd 2-0 Tottenham

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham boss Antonio Conte, speaking to Amazon Prime: "I think in the game, United deserved to win. They played a really good game. In our side, I think the level has to be higher, we need to improve a lot and to try and be better than today.

"The first goal was a deflection but at the end I have to be honest and tell you United played better than us. They created more chances than us. In to the pitch we put will but we have to show this level we need to try to improve and be better. The level was high and United showed today they are much better than us today.

"I consider United a really good team and you know very well what they did in the transfer market and what they can spend. You are talking about two different levels. In this type of game we can do better. We struggle against Chelsea and Arsenal and today.

"We have to try to improve and there is only the work to do this. I repeat, especially in this type of game when the atmosphere is a lot of noise, United are an important team, we can improve and increase our level."

  9. 'We need more of this'published at 22:48 British Summer Time 19 October 2022

    FT: Man Utd 2-0 Tottenham

    Manchester United

Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes tells BBC Sport: "Everyone is really pleased, it was a great performance and the perfect performance. We have to keep going, understand it is a process win or lose and we have to keep the focus and carry on.

"We had many good performances, against Newcastle we did a really good performance, controlled the game and did not get the result. Today overall it was was the best performance because we got the result and performance. We need more of this.

"We know the quality we have up front, we know we can be dangerous so if have chances to shoot we have to have the belief we can score. Marcus Rashford didn't score today but did so much, Jadon Sancho too and he was involved in Fred's goal."

Ed: Disrespectful of Ronaldo to walk down the tunnel early rather than waiting to congratulate his teammates on the pitch. Being a great doesn’t stop at scoring goals.

Manny: Ronaldo walking down the tunnel instead of staying to celebrate the win with his team mates pretty much sums his attitude up. Donny van de Beek had it a lot worse for 2 whole seasons and stayed more professional than the "most professional player in the game".

Mike: We always play better without Ronaldo.

There are always question marks on you when you're a top player, especially when you're at a huge club in Manchester United and with the standards that Fernandes has set over the years. He looked like a different player from the one I saw against Newcastle at the weekend. Tonight he was everywhere, he played fantastically well.

Ian: Spurs have flattered to deceive. The only big team they have had a result against was Chelsea when they should have had a man sent off before the equaliser... other than that they have had Harry Kane to thank for anything.. dull to watch and about to get found out very soon.

GG: Conteball is unwatchable & making a mockery of some very talented players. Is this worth maybe winning a cup for?

Kartik: Spurs best days were still under Poch and Harry. This team are being made horrible to watch by Conte. Bring Poch back.

Very impressive from United. Tottenham were good for the first 10 minutes but then Man United really starting dominating with Fred, Casemiro and Fernandes in the centre of the pitch. They out fought the Tottenham midfield three. Lloris made some outstanding saves. It could have been 4-0 if it wasn't for Hugo Lloris. Man United thoroughly deserved that win, there's no question about that.

  14. 'Everything was perfect today'published at 22:39 British Summer Time 19 October 2022

    FT: Bournemouth 0-1 Southampton

    Southampton

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl to BBC Match of the Day: "I am a proud man. I am proud for the boys for the effort they put in and this time we were absolutely ready for this win and the clean sheet. I think we deserved it today because we did a very good job.

"We analysed the last game very well and what was the problem after taking the lead and we tried to be a bit braver. You could see the confidence. All the things that we tried today worked, from the set-up, to the game plan, to the subs. Everything was perfect today I must say.

"It is big for us all - the fans and the team. It is a good step in the right direction for us before a tough game at the weekend against Arsenal. We have shown we are able to win games.

"We have quality in the squad. We didn't give a lot of chances away today and we had a few more chances to get a second goal and if we could it would have been calmer at the end. We showed patience on the ball and that is key to winning games.

"The work from our side never chances, we always focus on every game no matter how much pressure we have. That is the best way to do, focus on every part of the game you want to improve. We had a good meeting on Monday about the improvements we wanted to make from Sunday and the response from the team was perfect."

  15. 'We definitely deserved something'published at 22:35 British Summer Time 19 October 2022

    FT: Bournemouth 0-1 Southampton

    Bournemouth

Interim Bournemouth boss Gary O'Neil speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "I understand how fine the margins are between getting results and not and this is the first time where we haven't managed to get one. The performance and how front foot and committed they were, we definitely deserved something from the game, but Southampton took their moment and we're disappointed with our involvement in that. I'm disappointed but proud of the boys for the way they went about it.

"I was just trying to help the lads. They were giving everything so it was just about trying to find a way to get us into better areas. It was just about trying to and a little bit more because I felt in complete control of the game.

"We can lose any football match at this level but when I started doing this I said we could be competitive in every game and that was the case again today. We just lacked that last bit of quality in the moments when we arrived in their box and things didn't quite go for us. There was maybe a decision or two that could have gone our way ad things could have been different."

On the penalty shout for handball against Mohammed Salisu in the second half: "I have no idea. I don't know what to say about it to be honest. Having had one given against us at Nottingham Forest and Newcastle I don't understand how they can and then can't be. I don't really have an answer for you."

  16. 'We should have created more chances'published at 22:33 British Summer Time 19 October 2022

    FT: Newcastle 1-0 Everton

    Everton

Everton boss Frank Lampard, speaking to BBC Sport: "The stats I understand because in the box we weren't clinical enough. In terms of the overall game in terms of us competing, the stats were very good. It was a close match, Newcastle will know that. They are obviously ahead of us in their development. I think it was my second game we came here, and you could see where we were at and where we are trying to get to. It was two evenly-matched teams in general play but in the box we weren't clinical enough today. I am pretty pleased with parts of the performance.

"They are physical team, they are fast on the counters so they will always give teams problems. I don't think they gave us huge amounts of problems. The amount of times we played through their midfield with good play and the next bit isn't there. That is why the stats read low on chances. We should have had many more chances than we created. That is the one reflection I have on the game.

"He [Dominic Calvert-Lewin] hasn't played for a long time, since the back end of last season. He is a big player for us and when you lose a player of that level... we lost Richarlison in the summer and we are rebuilding. It is two big players. It is nicer to have him back in. I had to take him off as precaution and with the idea of Palace coming at the weekend.

"I thought it was a penalty [for a foul on Anthony Gordon in the box]. I worry that he will not get penalties because people are talking about him a lot last season. If you ask me if it is a foul, it is a nudge in the back and contact on the foot. For me that is a penalty. I am not saying it is a clear one but when you can look back on VAR, it is a penalty."

  17. 'A real team performance'published at 22:30 British Summer Time 19 October 2022

    FT: Newcastle 1-0 Everton

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, speaking to BBC Sport: "The performance was very good, in a different way to how we have been at times this season. It wasn't free-flowing football, it was a very competitive game, a lot of fight in midfield, very physical. I am delighted with character shown and how we defended as a team.

"For the whole team that should give them enormous pleasure [another clean sheet], because that was a real team performance today. We defended our goal and goalkeeper very well. Everton are a strong team. They put a lot of balls into our box, a lot of direct play, and we had to deal with that."

On Miguel Almiron: "Confidence is the main starting point. He has scored some spectacular goals in my time here and today's was right up there. He is playing very well with and without the ball. He has always worked very hard for the team. It is good to see him get individual recognition for all that work."

On harmony between the team and fans: "It is so important that we enhance that. We try to show our appreciation. We know it costs a lot of time and money. They have to give a lot of that to support us."

On expectations: "My expectation is that we continue to give our all in every game. The margins between success and failure are very small. If we keep giving what we are I think we will have a successful season."

  18. 'I want to keep working hard'published at 22:28 British Summer Time 19 October 2022

    FT: Newcastle 1-0 Everton

    Newcastle United

Newcastle goalscorer Miguel Almiron, speaking to BBC Sport: "I am feeling very good because of the moment of the team and the momentum. I want to keep working hard to be in the same way.

"I think the confidence that the manager has given to me, I try to improve in every session. I have to thank my colleagues as they help me every day.

"It is always very special to score a goal at St James' with these special fans. It is a shame I could not score in the second half but we managed to win the game."

  19. 'We deserved the win'published at 22:24 British Summer Time 19 October 2022

    FT: Liverpool 1-0 West Ham

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "I am delighted. A lot of the parts were really good. As long as we played football we were outstanding and caused West Ham a lot of problems but the only problem was we didn't play this football for the whole 95 minutes and we opened it up for West Ham. They increased the risk by bringing on Michail Antonio and other players and they were a real threat with the long balls, all of a sudden we had to defend. We knew that, I don't stand here thinking it should be an easy game for us, but we got the result and I think we deserved the result. In the end it wasn't that luck has always been on our side but maybe today we had it, or Ali, however you want to look at it. It is three points more, massive.

"It was an outstanding penalty save. It was a really well-taken penalty, right in the corner, and I had no idea how Ali did that. We were a little concerned he wasn't on the line to be honest with you, now a days you never know if you can celebrate a penalty save or not but he did that right. It was very important in that moment just before half time. We were really good in the first 35 minutes and played everywhere where West Ham couldn't defend us. We scored a wonderful goal and with a bit more Darwin [Nunez] could have had a hat-trick.

On Nunez: "He was outstanding. He is a massive talent and is only 22. He came from Portugal and he wasn't there for long, so not too long away he was Uruguay. He is a really big talent and we're really excited about him."

On the penalty: "No complaints. I've just seen it now, I thought Joe tried to hit the ball and he didn't manage that and he did push the player. That is a penalty."

  20. 'We ran Liverpool close'published at 22:22 British Summer Time 19 October 2022

    FT: Liverpool 1-0 West Ham

    West Ham United

West Ham manager David Moyes, speaking to BBC Sport: "We came really close to getting something, it is difficult to say sometimes if you deserve more than you've got but I think we did tonight.

"We put Liverpool under pressure and created chances. We missed a penalty and didn't score what looked like a tap-in. If we play like that we will win more than we will lose.

"Nobody comes to Anfield and thinks it is an easy place to get a result - I know that more than anyone. But I think we ran Liverpool close."

On his side's recent improved form after a slow start: "We're playing much better and beginning to integrate some of the new players. We are playing better and hopefully that leads to better results. We go away from here knowing we gave it a good shot."

On how Jarrod Bowen is feeling after missing a first-half penalty to equalise: "It was a wonderful save from Alisson. Jarrod scored a good penalty the other week and we have to give credit to the goalkeeper. We think a lot of Jarrod and he will be fine."

On Tomas Soucek being denied a late equaliser: "From where I was it looked like an open goal. James Milner gets a toe to it which deflects it to Alisson who saves.

"You have to give credit to Liverpool for the way they defended it. It felt like a walk-in goal. We're creating chances but we're just not getting them over the line."
