Manchester United

More from Erik ten Hag, speaking to MOTD: "If we don't manage it with the 10 outfield players on the pitch you can really see defending with 11 because we have a great goalkeeper.

"With great saves and composure you can rely on him."

Is this team where you wanted them to be when you started? "We have a long way to go, there is a lot of room for improvement. We need to keep the process going and also learn from the wins.

"The second half we could have done it better. We have to also be critical to ourselves. I am happy, don't get me wrong, with the spirit and the defending, but when you keep the ball better you have more control of the game."

West Ham United

West Ham manager David Moyes speaking to Sky Sports: "If you look through the game, we have been really close. We deserved to come away with something. I don't think we could have done much more. We gave the ball away a bit too much and that led to Man United's goal but overall we played well.

"In the second half especially we took our chances.

On Lukasz Fabianski coming off at half-time: "Fabianski rocked his knee, he didn't feel comfortable and had to come off.

"We know what a great keeper De Gea is, he was during my time here, and we hoped he wouldn't save one of those two chances. I'm pleased for De Gea because he is a great guy but disappointed that one of those didn't go in.

On Man United's goal: "It was a great cross and a great header and sometimes you just have to appreciate the technical quality.

"Jarrod makes a great chance and we are just lacking that little bit of clinical edge. I have to praise our players, we put in a great shift today."

Manchester United

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, speaking to MOTD: "In this team it is a big attitude and winning spirit. You see that, the start of the season not that good but improving a lot. We have to keep that process going.

"The fans also like it. You see developing a bond between the fans and the team, that is good."

On Marcus Rashford: "It is a great performance. It is fantastic and fantastic for Manchester United. They have a great academy and a great history with the academy.

"The player on the 85th anniversary of always having a youth player in the squad or on the pitch and Marcus Rashford I think he is representing that fact and scores a brilliant goal with a great pass from Eriksen. It was a great header, the day before his birthday, for his 100th goal is a real milestone."

On Harry Maguire: "He was magnificent in protecting the box. He is a great player and a really good defender and we have seen how important he is for the squad.

"I am really happy for the team of course but also Harry Maguire as he came off the pitch with a clean sheet."

Diogo Dalot had a fine game today for Manchester United. He was effective defensively and a threat going forward.

The full-back created four chances in the game, the most he’s ever created in a top-flight league game in his career across the Premier League, Serie A (with AC Milan) and Portuguese Primeira Liga (with FC Porto).

West Ham United

Jarrod Bowen speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "Disappointed. On another day we get something from the game. David De Gea made some great saves, we had so many chances.

"Sometimes when your luck is not in, it's not in. In the second half we really showed what we were about and we dominated and nobody would argue that we deserved a goal.

"Sometimes that happens in this league. The quality is so high and just one chance is all it takes. I though I had a good contact on shot and sometimes it goes past the defender's legs and in but Harry [Maguire] got a good block on it. It's a tough pill to swallow.

"We need to keep the momentum high and keep the performances going. Every performance since the international break has been an improvement and I think soon enough these narrow margins will end up going in our favour.

Manchester United

Rashford speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "We didn't play well but good to win games like that. If we want to achieve our aims we have to win games like that

"Beautiful feeling [to get his 100th goal]. Something I have been working on, I feel I need to score more goals like that and keep getting in those areas. Pleased that I have managed to score today and it's always good to score regardless of whether Gareth Southgate is watching or not.

"Completely different energy in the team, we had a difficult start but we have to keep going

"De Gea, Martinez, Harry, Diogo, they were all brilliant. We held on and we defended well.

West Ham United

West Ham defender Aaron Cresswell: "We feel really disappointed not to get anything from the game. Just frustrated. We dominated for large spells in the game at Old Trafford. How in the last 20 minutes we didn't score one, I don't know.

"De Gea made three or four really good saves. It was the worst case scenario because we created chances but didn't get anything from the game. Same thing happened at Anfield a few weeks ago. We dominated in spells and those are the times you have to take your chances and we didn't today.

"Got to stay positive. Look at the positives when we get back to the training ground. Work on the things we haven't done well and just look forward to the next game."

Manchester United

Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea speaking to Sky Sports: "It's a great win for us. If we want to achieve and be in the top places we have to win games like this today.

"Of the two saves, probably the header from Zouma was the best because it was almost certainly going in but I am happy for all of them. Happy to make the saves and it's a massive win.

"We are pressing well and recovering the ball well high up the pitch. We conceded some chances at the end but West Ham are a great team. I'm really happy to be honest.

"We had a difficult start to the season, Man United is a massive club and we are getting better. We can keep more clean sheets, play well and keep going until the end.

"I don't like to think too far into the future, we will just take it day by day. Big game on Thursday and we want to finish top of the group. We will go for another game, more energy and keep going again."

West Ham stay 13th on 14 points, which is just three above the bottom three and two less than ninth.

David Moyes has never won an away Premier League game at Manchester United in 16 attempts (D4 L12), failing with Everton (11 games), Sunderland (one game) and current side West Ham (four games).

That win lifts Manchester United up a place to fifth. They are now above Chelsea and a point worse off than fourth-placed Newcastle.

They are now unbeaten in their last 5 games in the English Premier League, their last longer unbeaten streak was from 15th January 2022 to 26th February 2022, a run of 8 games.

Man United have improved over the weeks and they've still got a long way to go. They lost control of the game in the last 15-20 minutes, ten Hag won't be happy about that. But they've won 1-0. Great goal by Rashford, great saves by De Gea who has kept them in the game lets' be honest. Man United will take confidence from this.

Feel sorry for West Ham, they played really well in the second half. They are always tough opponents, you know they'll make a game of it. They're a dangerous team but Man United soldiered through thanks to De Gea.

Two fantastic saves from De Gea, he has been a fantastic keeper over the years. We know he has a few ricks in him and has made mistakes like most goalies do but today he has been sensational.

Marcus Rashford's header is the difference - the one true moment of attacking quality. West Ham threw all they had at trying to find a leveller and will probably reflect back on how they should have taken at least a point.
