  1. Can Liverpool bounce back?published at 14:58 Greenwich Mean Time 12 November 2022

    Liverpool v Southampton (15:00 GMT)

Liverpool have earned five straight league wins against Southampton at Anfield, scoring a combined 16 goals without reply.

However, Liverpool's 29-match unbeaten home league run was ended by Leeds in their most recent outing at Anfield.

They could lose four consecutive Premier League games against sides in the relegation zone for the first time, having already been beaten by Manchester United, Nottingham Forest and Leeds this season.

Southampton have lost nine of the past 10 league meetings with Liverpool, with the exception being a 1-0 home win in January 2021.

It's 16 years since a 17-year-old Theo Walcott was named in Sven-Goran Eriksson's England squad for the 2006 World Cup.

Walcott has 47 caps and eight goals for his country but the 33-year-old has not played for the Three Lions since 2016.

The former Arsenal forward made his first Premier League start of the season in Ralph Hasenhuttl's final game in charge last week, but he starts the Nathan Jones era on the bench at Anfield.

  3. How much difference can Jones make?published at 14:57 Greenwich Mean Time 12 November 2022

Nathan Jones takes charge of Southampton for the first time here but how much difference can he make in a couple of days? Saints just don't score enough goals but Anfield is not exactly the ideal place to go for a club to get a managerial bounce.

Admittedly my record of predicting Liverpool's results this season has been a bit hit and miss, but I didn't just call their win at Tottenham last week, I nailed the exact result.

I'm still not absolutely sure the Reds will win this one, just because of their inconsistency, but given their season so far, I think Jurgen Klopp will be absolutely desperate to go into this winter break on a high.

    Prediction: 3-0

    • Tottenham have won seven of their past nine Premier League meetings with Leeds.
    • Leeds have lost each of their past five away league games against Spurs, since a 2-1 victory under David O’Leary in February 2001.
    • Spurs have lost three of their past four Premier League games (W1), as many as they had in their previous 24.
    • After an eight-game winless run, Leeds have now won their past two Premier League games. They last won more consecutively in May 2021 (4).

The Redbridge Brass Band played 'those magnificent men in their flying machines' on the London Stadium pitch a few moments ago.

It’s the only thing flying high on this pitch as both these sides live cheek-by-jowl in the lower half of the table.

The West Ham fans want more than a good run in the Europa Conference and will want a flicker of hope before the World Cup that this is a side that can overturn narrow defeats and deliver at the top half of the league when they return on Boxing Day.

Leeds vs Spurs - Marcelo Bielsa’s last match before he was sacked.

  8. 'Can Nottingham Forest create?'published at 14:53 Greenwich Mean Time 12 November 2022

Nottingham Forest v Crystal Palace (15:00 GMT)

No-one wants to be bottom of the table going into the World Cup so this is a massive game for Nottingham Forest, especially as they are at home.

Forest were good in the first half against Brentford last week but fell away after the break so it is going to be a nervy City Ground crowd this time.

Still, they will probably take heart from seeing Forest get a last-minute equaliser against the Bees, and then beating Tottenham in the Carabao Cup in midweek.

Having said all that, Crystal Palace are playing really well right now and are so dangerous in attack. They have got a lot of match-winners in their side, while I am not sure Forest create enough.

The most recent competitive games between these teams were in the 2012-13 Championship. Both fixtures were drawn.

Nathan Jones is a good manager and he did an incredible job at Luton, twice. He came to Stoke and it didn’t quite work out. It was no real fault of his, I think it just didn’t work out that season. He’s very meticulous in the way that he works.

He works as hard as any manager I’ve ever played underneath. I’m hoping he gets to grips with this new role. It’s the Premier League, it’s very different.

It’s relentless and I think they’ve brought Nathan Jones in and they’ve given it to him right now to go and plan and that’s what he will do. He knows the style of play that he wants to play. If he’s given time, I’m sure he’ll be a success.

It's a glorious autumn afternoon at Anfield as Southampton start the Nathan Jones era.

This time last week Jones was overseeing a Luton win at Blackpool.

After a whirlwind week, the 49-year-old Welshman finds himself taking charge of his first Premier League match after landing the Saints job following Ralph Hasenhuttl's sacking.

The former Luton and Stoke boss was part of Sami Hyypia's coaching team at Brighton in 2014.

Hyypia is remembered fondly in these parts after winning the Champions League, two FA Cups, two League Cups and a Uefa Cup during 10 years at Liverpool between 1999-2009.

It’ll be a strange feeling looking down at the technical area from my seat in the press box and not seeing Jurgen Klopp on the touchline as he serves his one match ban.

Klopp was still out watching the warm-ups as usual though, his eyes firmly fixed on Southampton.

As for the game, I’m looking forward to seeing how Roberto Firmino and Thiago react today to the disappointment of being left out of World Cup squads this week.

I think it is probably something a lot more subtle, they were a team that were successful for an incredibly long time. I remember them doing the gegenpressing so much and thinking good luck keeping that up unless you got 22 players that can generally do it and I do think that has come home to roost over a period of time.

Huge performance. A lot of pressure on him because even though he's not included in the England squad everyone's still looking at him to say, 'okay let's see what you got'.

Haaland the main man is up the other end of the pitch, everyone is saying Manchester City are going to blow Brentford away - he (Toney) has probably had five or six really good chances today and he's scored two goals. Ends up the match winner.

I think it's a job well done for Ivan Toney.

Brentford striker Ivan Toney speaking to BT Sport at full-time: "We've just got to keep doing well and keep doing our best.

"I know what I'm capable of and I'll keep going. The motivation is the boys in the dressing room and the fans.

"What we do week in week out on the training pitch shows that we're capable of this. They might be Manchester City but they're humans and humans make mistakes."

Ben Mee added: "It's a fantastic result, the lads dug in and we created lots of chances.

"It's well deserved, we've lost a couple of goals late on, so it was nice to hold on.

"He's [Toney] showed today what he's about.

"We won headers and interceptions, dug in and did really well at the back.

"Sets us off in a good mood going into the break."

I hate to say it, but I think Antonio Conte has more of a chance of staying put.

There's no denying our past two results have been just what we needed - and they've definitely boosted morale - but, ultimately, I think Jesse's time at Leeds will be cut short in the near future.

Conte has just celebrated his one-year anniversary in charge at Tottenham. They are in a great position in the Premier League and through to the Champions League last 16. We're just hoping to actually stay in the Premier League.

If we collect another couple of losses on the bounce, then the board might think seriously about lining up a replacement for Marsch by the time 2023 comes around, especially if the Leeds faithful make it clear they want him to go.

You know how vocal we can be!

Both managers heard sounds of discontent from their home crowds at half-time last weekend.

With Tottenham in the last 16 of the Champions League and fourth in the Premier League, Antonio Conte is not facing the sack. At the same time, Jesse Marsch has Leeds in 12th after two consecutive wins.

So, what would constitute success and managerial safety?

Conte is trying to dampen expectations in terms of trophies, but another top-four finish might be seen as progress, especially if he feels he is getting the backing he wants regarding signings.

Leeds' young side are scoring goals, but need consistency - and to stop conceding.

From the outside, Marsch needs time, but it would only take a few bad results to pile the pressure on - as was the case with predecessor Marcelo Bielsa.

Therefore, Conte is the more likely to be in place.

Tottenham manager Antonio Conte has said it is "important" for him to "feel that I deserve a new contract".

The Italian's deal at Spurs expires in the summer, and when asked about his future on Friday, he said: "When you start a path with a club, the dream is to stay here for many years and try to build something important.

"I think it's very important the relationship you create with the players, the club and the environment around you.

"It's important to feel that I deserve a new contract. To sign a new contract with this club, I have to feel this. We will talk with the club and find the best solution."

Conte also said he will hold a review of the first half of the season with managing director Fabio Paratici and owner Daniel Levy to "discuss the positive and negative things and what we can improve".

"Every time we speak, we always speak together. They are always good conversations," he added.

"There is only one target: to improve on and off the pitch, and then find the best solution in every moment. Until now, we've worked with only this target to improve and find a good way to bring this club forward".
