The two managers were a contrast when the whistle went for half-time. Everton's Brian Sorensen was applauding calmly while Liverpool's Matt Beard had his head down, writing notes on a piece of paper. His side have a lot of work to do. Everton have shown plenty of the promise they have spoken about under Sorensen.

    Liverpool 0-2 Everton

Had Everton been told to describe their ideal first half of the derby, they might have dreamed up 45 minutes like that.

Alert to slack passing and dangerous almost every time they attacked, the blue side of the city holds bragging rights at the break courtesy of Finnigan's expert header and Park's superb finish.

Liverpool will feel they should have scored as much as they will feel relief at not falling further behind when Snoeijs spurned that chance shortly before the half-time whistle. They need a considerable turnaround now.

  3. 'Liverpool have struggled'published at 19:34 British Summer Time 25 September 2022

Former England international on Sky Sports

Everton have been excellent. Their intensity on and off the ball and their movement has been very good. Liverpool have just struggled to find any sort of rhythm.

Now Everton are the ones who can't believe they haven't scored!

Liverpool cede possession again, affording Snoeijs the chance to race towards the penalty area through the centre, finding Christiansen to her left.

The skipper returns the favour with a perfect low cross along the face of goal, finding the run of Snoeijs, whose touch is too faint to divert the opportunity into the net in front of her.

Beard had his head in his hands after that Holland chance. Who'd be a manager?

  6. CLOSE!published at 38 mins

    Liverpool 0-2 Everton

    Liverpool should have scored!

A neat corner routine from the hosts' left ends with the ball bobbling interminably around the penalty area, several players attempting to clear and taking a swipe at a clearance.

A huge roar goes up from the home fans as it rolls to Holland on the left, who is perhaps the only player in space and has a largely unguarded net to aim at from close range - but she can only curl her powerful finish narrowly wide!

That was a really good counter attack by Everton for the goal. The touch was really important from Jess Park. She rounds the goalkeeper and slots it calmly round Rachel Laws. What a finish from such a young player and that's what Jess Park brings to this league. The cool, calm and collective finish and was able to put the ball at the back of the net.

Liverpool are really struggling to clear their lines and find players. The intensity of the press from Everton is really impressive.

This is absolutely brilliant from Jess Park. She is so composed to cut inside on to her left foot. This is just clever - you think she is going to hit it, then it's a nice cool, calm finish from the youngster.

Wow. That was a classy finish from Jess Park, who had the composure to take it around Rachael Laws before sliding it in the bottom corner. It all came from Katie Stengel losing possession needlessly and it was a perfect ball over the top from Nathalie Bjorn. Liverpool are not doing themselves justice at all so far.

Park's first goal for Everton is a beauty!

Stengel lets the ball roll away from her near the halfway line inside Everton territory. Bjorn looks up and clips a glorious long pass on to the run of Park to the right of the home penalty area.

The on-loan Manchester City forward still has plenty to do but her run and finish belies her inexperience, bamboozling Liverpool's backtracking defenders and leaving Laws grounded before slotting in.

    That is a masterful finish!

  13. Postpublished at 31 mins

    Liverpool 0-1 Everton

Everton continue to keep possession on the fringes of Liverpool's penalty area, searching for options and keeping the home fans quiet.

George and Christiansen play one-twos on the left flank, then patiently play the ball back towards the centre circle, content to wait for the right openings.

Liverpool are growing into it. They have found their shape and are putting Everton under pressure higher up the pitch. Rikke Sevecke and Katrine Veje both just lost possession and Liverpool striker Katie Stengel should have done better with the opportunity that fell to her from it.

Veje has started in that back three for Everton but we've found her in advanced positions on the pitch. She's had a couple of shots already on goal.

She's taken the majority of the set pieces. It's something that she has worked on and Sorensen believes in her from those sort of positions.

It's been a really good battle on Everton's right-hand side and Liverpool's left, with Megan Campbell and Jess Park going at it.

    Sue Smith

Much better from Liverpool - they need to win the ball higher up the field like that. I just wonder if Katie Stengel could have taken her shot earlier.

It seems to have given Liverpool the lift they needed, though.

  18. CLOSE!published at 26 mins

    Liverpool 0-1 Everton

Liverpool's chances have come through clumsiness in possession from Everton.

Sevecke dawdles on the ball just beyond her own penalty area in a central position, stumbling as Stengel pickpockets her.

The forward shows admirable composure to take her time and muddle the defenders in front of her, but her shot is high and wide. Lawley is not best pleased to have been ignored, having been in space nearby.

There are clearly some at Anfield watching the women's team for the first time because they just reacted to Megan Campbell's huge throw-in with a growing "ahhhhh".

She is renowned for her throw-ins and Liverpool scored several goals off them last season.

    Liverpool 0-1 Everton

Everton respond with menace to Liverpool's first half-chance, Park racing towards the penalty area and veering off to the right before her markers catch up with the livewire and crowd her out.

Bjorn reaches the byline from a Graham throw-in on the right, nudging a cross into the penalty area that is cleared.
