You've got to say that the goal has been coming and it was a great ball in by Everton.

I thought Liverpool would been dealing with these set-piece situations because they are good in the air.

But Megan Finnigan wanted that a lot more than the Liverpool players did. She was able to direct it down into the bottom corner.

Everton deserved that goal. They have been all over Liverpool since kick-off. They have been getting a lot of joy in the air, too, and Liverpool failed to deal with the initial flick-on from the cross.

The Blues rubbed it in further with a celebration in front of the Kop, which was booed by the home supporters.

    Everton's excellent start is rewarded!

Finnigan wins a corner on the right again, which takes a touch from an Everton head on its way through to the midfielder in the centre of the penalty area.

Koivisto can't reach the ball ahead of Finnigan, who angles an expert header past Laws and into the far corner of the Liverpool net!

  10. 'Good start from Everton'published at 18:55 British Summer Time 25 September 2022

    Liverpool 0-0 Everton

Gabby George gets up well but just can't get over the ball enough to direct it into the top corner. Good, positive start from Everton, though.

  11. CLOSE!published at 7 mins

A moment of concern for Liverpool as the ball pinballs around inside the penalty area following Everton's corner from the right.

George nods the ball wide of the far post. That was a tricky chance.

    Liverpool 0-0 Everton

    Lindsay Johnson
Ex-England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra

Brian Sorensen has just come in to the fold so I think he will be afforded time. It's a derby so both managers are under pressure. Both want to win and make a statement in this Merseyside derby.

  14. Postpublished at 4 mins

    Liverpool 0-0 Everton

Everton have a free-kick in a useful position outside the penalty area after Graham is brought down.

Captain Christiansen sends a low, diagonal delivery towards the penalty spot, which Liverpool deal with unconvincingly.

Laws eventually gathers a bobbling ball from the subsequent passage of play.

Everton, in their blue home colours, start us off!

Liverpool eventually win a throw-in inside their own half on the right, but Everton swiftly win back possession.

I was impressed with Jess Park last season. In that Man City squad, where there is an abundance of internationals, she was an exciting young player.

She's quick, direct and fearless. That's what Everton need. I'm excited to see her play tonight and we've got the experience of Christiansen to come and steady that ship.

The Merseyside derby needs no introduction. It's one of the biggest sporting rivalries and this city lives for the big games.

Liverpool and Everton's history is entwined in so many ways. The grounds are pretty much on the same road and even in the city centre's shopping centre the clubs' official stores are next to each other.

Everton made sure they got one over their rivals too. The store's address reads "Everton Two, Liverpool One [shopping centre]."

I think Everton fans would be very happy with that scoreline today.

Everton manager Sorensen has never managed in a derby game in England but has been left with no uncertainty about the importance of their meeting with Liverpool from those chats he had with fans.

“Of course they also talked about the derby,” he said. “It was the first one they were really looking forward to. I think the whole city is buzzing when you have a derby, so it’s really nice to be a part of it."

Despite their current eight-game winless run, Everton can take encouragement from victories in their last four WSL matches against newly promoted opponents, scoring 13 goals along the way.

“We hope we can be even better and get some good results and the fans will be proud so we can build that bond between us and the fans,” said Sorensen. “I am really looking forward to seeing the away end. Hopefully we can hear them - and I think we will.

“These are special games throughout the season that you look forward to playing. In Denmark, I watched those games because of the intensity and how much it meant. You also had the Celtic v Rangers derby, which I watched.

“As a spectator, it is always intriguing and you want to see what happens that day because it’s a special game. I’m just happy to be a part of it and hopefully have a positive influence on my own team and how we can perform in a big derby. Hopefully we can get the win.”
