The James Garner fee is going to be £15.5m I am told. That should be done to Everton by the end of the window but it's not completed yet.

  4. 'Nottingham Forest are just a bit crazy'published at 10:58 British Summer Time 1 September 2022

    BBC Radio 5 Live

The Daily Telegraph's northern football correspondent Luke Edwards was on BBC Radio 5 Live this morning discussing deadline day.

He was asked about Nottingham Forest's spending: "Nottingham Forest are just a bit crazy. It is 19 players they've brought in, effectively a whole new squad. I'm really interested in seeing how this one goes. It kind of rips up the rules to all established thinking that you don't change too much too soon. I remember Fulham a few years ago; they spent over |100m and headed straight back to the Championship. I'm slightly worried about them, I have to say.

"They've started the season very well, Steve Cooper is a fantastic manager. But I think this slightly bonkers thinking of changing an entre team may lead to the owner thinking you need to change the manager if things don't go to plan. There is a lot of pressure on Steve Cooper now because they've spent so much money; they really have rolled the dice. I think that is way too much to change but I'm ready to be proven wrong."

  6. 'I look forward to window being shut'published at 10:50 British Summer Time 1 September 2022

    Nottingham Forest

Steve Cooper, chatting to BBC Radio Nottingham on what Nottingham Forest fans can expect today: "I look forward to it being shut. Of course it's been a unique window going into the Premier League, the transition. In the end, the amount of transfers we’ve made will write a lot of the narrative for your questions. Once today comes and goes that’s us, ready to go into next weeks and months before next window.

"That’s what we’ve got to be focussed on - continuing to try and be best version of us whether players have been here for years or have just come through door. This is the team that represents the club at this moment in time. That’s really important. It gives us the best opportunity to be a good team in terms of togetherness when games come.

"The recruitment certainly dies down for sure, when the window closes. The guys will start the process again and get ready for January. When the window opens we’ll get a bit closer with communications again, that’s normal. All focus is just on performance and on the team we work with every day."

The Daily Telegraph's Northern Football writer, external, Luke Edwards, said there could be a few outgoings at Newcastle today.

Centre-back Federico Fernandez is set to join Elche in Spain and midfielder Matty Longstaff is close to moving to Barnsley.

Fernandez, 33, has fallen down the pecking order following the arrivals of Dan Burn and Sven Botman.

Longstaff, younger brother of team-mate Sean, was on loan with Mansfield Town in League Two last season and is out of favour at Newcastle.

He's expected to join Barnsley on loan with a view to his move becoming permanent at the end of the season.

    Fans' view

    Chelsea

Where to start with a transfer window that has seen Chelsea splurge north of £250m on new signings this summer and by all accounts isn't finished yet?

A squad that was already creaking at the seams even before Roman Abramovich's reign ended is still in need of strengthening, as shown by a second defeat of this fledgling season at Southampton on Tuesday.

A defensive-minded midfielder has been a need all summer and late interest is being shown in Ajax's Edson Alvarez, PSV's Ibrahim Sangare and Aston Villa's Douglas Luiz, while it is believed Chelsea are in the market for two attackers, depending on departures.

Names to look out for include Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who seems more likely than not to join from Barcelona and Wilfried Zaha, whose contract at Crystal Palace has just a year left to run.

Moves for Everton's Anthony Gordon and Frenkie de Jong have petered out, but Chelsea are keen on RB Leipzig's Josko Gvardiol with a view to signing yet another central defender for the 2023-24 season and also for big money.

Leaving Stamford Bridge are likely to be Billy Gilmour (sadly, for all his talent) to Brighton on a permanent basis, Hakim Ziyech or possibly Christian Pulisic as both want away, while it probably makes sense to give Conor Gallagher maximum playing time this season with another loan.

Meanwhile, Marcos Alonso is still likely to sign for Barcelona, Michy Batshuayi could depart on a free and Ethan Ampadu is probably heading back to Italy on loan.

So just a few deals due to be signed off today then.

  13. Chelsea looking to sign Aubameyangpublished at 10:23 British Summer Time 1 September 2022

    Alistair Magowan
    BBC Sport

Chelsea hope they can secure a deal to sign Barcelona striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang before the transfer deadline.

The club has been in talks to sign the former Arsenal forward, with Blues full-back Marcus Alonso potentially moving the other way as part of a deal.

There is also interest in Ajax defensive midfielder Edson Alvarez after a number of injuries to Chelsea's midfield.

But it is not clear if the Dutch side are willing to sell the Mexican international given the club has already sold several players, including Antony and Lisandro Martinez to Manchester United.

Chelsea have already spent about £250m on players under their new American ownership this summer, including £70m on former Leicester defender Wesley Fofana.

Aubameyang, who has previously worked with Blues boss Thomas Tuchel at Borussia Dortmund, would help Chelsea's lack of options in attack. The club loaned Romelu Lukuka back to Inter Milan earlier in the summer.

  14. 'Akanji has everything we want in a centre-back'published at 10:21 British Summer Time 1 September 2022

Man City sign Manuel Akanji from Borussia Dortmund

    Manchester City

Manchester City's director of Football Txiki Begiristain: “Manuel has plenty of experience playing at the top level of European football and we are confident he will be a valuable addition to our squad.

“We have been impressed with his performances during his time at Dortmund, where he has developed into a very good defender and one who is ready to perform in both the Premier League and Champions League.

“He has everything we want in a centre-back. He is strong, quick, comfortable in possession, has an excellent passing range and he will complement the other defenders in this team and our style of play.”

"City have been one of the best teams in Europe over the last few seasons. They are brilliant to watch, play an exciting brand of football and compete for trophies year in, year out, so coming here feels like the perfect next step in my career.

“Pep Guardiola is an exceptional manager and this is an exceptional squad of players, so this is an exciting opportunity for me.

  20. Tranmere re-sign Glatzel on loanpublished at 10:04 British Summer Time 1 September 2022

Tranmere Rovers have re-signed forward Paul Glatzel on a season-long loan from Liverpool.

The 21-year-old spent time at Prenton Park last season, making 21 appearances and scoring six goals before his season was cut short by injury.

"I loved my time here last season so it will be good to try and kick on from where I left off," he said.

"The staff, players and supporters were all great with me so I always felt I had some unfinished business here."
