Minutes after missing that penalty, Motherwell striker Kevin Van Veen has a free header from seven yards out but puts it straight at United goalkeeper Carljohan Eriksson.
Dipo Akinyemi
The Championship leaders edge ahead at Cappielow.
Livingston 1-0 Heart of Midlothian
Christian Montano isn't too far away from a second goal for Livingston, the winger hitting into the side netting after good work by Scott Pittman.
St Johnstone 1-0 St Mirren
Curtis Main is set free on the edge of the box by Jonah Ayunga's well-weighted pass, but the striker takes an eternity to get it under control before it's thumped clear by Alex Mitchell.
St Johnstone have been impressive since they took the lead.
Incredible!
Just after Ryan Edwards cleared Paul McGinn's shot off the line, Motherwell were awarded a penalty for handball in the box.
Up steps Van Veen, who sticks it to the goalkeeper's right, but Carljohan Eriksson guesses correctly and makes the save.

The home side are by a distance the more positive in this opening period.
Blair Spittal, Joe Efford, Matt Penney and Kevin van Veen have all had efforts either blocked, saved or just off target.
There's a real sense of purpose and belief about Motherwell under Stevie Hammell, allied with a freedom to attack.
United are far from being overrun but are struggling to get themselves up the pitch with any consistency to threaten Liam Kelly's goal, but maybe that Steven Fletcher header will give them more belief.
Motherwell 0-0 Dundee United
United's best chance of the game. It's the only one so far, mind.
Dylan Levitt swings in a free kick from the left and former Scotland striker Steven Fletcher's downward header is pushed away by Motherwell goalkeeper Liam Kelly.
Cristian Montano
Christian Montano meets a free-kicks and taps in for Livingston - his second goal of the season.
The Hearts players are furious - they believe the winger was offside. But TV replays show Stephen Humphrys plays him onside.

Hibernian 1-0 Kilmarnock
Nohan Kenneh puts it inches wide.
A cross trickles towards the edge of the area and the midfielder, making his return to the starting 11, curls it towards the back post, but his accuracy is just off. Almost a second for the hosts.
Nicky Clark
It's the debutant Nicky Clark who puts his new side into the lead.
Drey Wright floated the ball in to Stevie May before his header back across goal finds Clark who had drifted behind the St Mirren central defenders.
Great striker's instinct from Clark who then poked the ball home from two yards out.
Hibernian 1-0 Kilmarnock
Almost a second for Hibs!
Chris Cadden shows phenomenal pace to chase a long ball down, reaching it on the by-line and finding Josh Campbell, but the midfielder puts his first-time shot wide.
St Johnstone 0-0 St Mirren
It's a clash of the number 23s as Ryan Strain clashes with the home side's Graham Carey.
The St Mirren winger comes out of it the worst, taking the full force of the challenge on his lower leg, and needs a bit of treatment before slowly returning his feet and ultimately playing on.
Motherwell 0-0 Dundee United
Full-back Matt Penney whips in a ball from the left and home striker Kevin Van Veen heads on to the roof of the net.
Motherwell much the better side so far.
Hibernian 1-0 Kilmarnock
Kilmarnock ambled out of the blocks and Hibs have punished them. It's given the visitors a kick and they've started getting forward - with Daniel Armstrong firing a long distance effort at goalkeeper David Marshall.
Hibs then break forward through Martin Boyle and Alan Power crocks the winger. A booking for the Killie captain.
Motherwell 0-0 Dundee United
Motherwell striker Kevin Van Veen is flat on his back screaming for a penalty.
A long ball forward sets the Dutchman racing away from Charlie Mulgrew, and he prods it past goalkeeper Carljohan Eriksson and takes a tumble.
The goalkeeper just stood his ground really. The ball scuttles away harmlessly.
Livingston 0-0 Heart of Midlothian
James Penrice knocks the ball into the net for Livingston, but the flag was already up for offside and the full-back has no complaints.
Hearts’ Stephen Kingsley and Livingston’s Scott Pitman
FT: Celtic 4-0 Rangers
Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst is understandably "very disappointed" with his team's performance in their 4-0 Old Firm derby defeat by Celtic.
"You know the start you have is very important in how the game will develop," he tells BBC Sportsound. "We knew the threat they had with quick throw-ins and free-kicks.
"We were exposed twice, which gave two goals away. For me, that's very disappointing. We knew they were going to do [restart quick] and still we weren't prepared enough.
"The longer the nil is on the scoreboard, the more you can grow in the game. Today, that wasn't the case. I'm disappointed we couldn't give the game we wanted for our fans.
"Everyone needs to reflect in what they did well and what they did wrong, same for me."
On the five-point gap at the top of the table, Van Bronckhorst adds: "There are still a lot of games to be played, plus three games against Celtic, so we have to move on and get stronger and make sure the moments we had today can never happen again, no matter who we play.
Rangers' Connor Goldson and Steven Davis looked shell-shocked
