Joel Matip's late header against Ajax at Anfield gave Liverpool their first Champions League win this season.

Meanwhile, Tottenham conceded two injury-time goals as they fell to a Champions League defeat against Sporting Lisbon.

Tributes to Queen Elizabeth II were respectfully observed across 30 EFL games and at Liverpool and Tottenham's Champions League matches as UK football resumed after the weekend's postponements.

Robert Lewandowski struggled in front of goal on his return to Bayern Munich as his Barcelona side lost in Germany.

More from Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp speaking to BT Sport: "I’m not picky, in that sense [On Joel Matip scoring]. It was a nice celebration that showed pretty much everything about what the boys thought today.

"Nothing is over. It is a first step, a very important step. Now we have a strange break, pretty long. Brighton is waiting."

On Ajax getting in behind the Liverpool defence too easily: "I have to watch it back. I thought we dealt really well with that, in that situation not, but that will always happen in football.

"If Ali [Alisson] has to make a save, then something went wrong beforehand. I understand that we talk about little details but for us it’s not that important because it’s about conceding a chance, which can always happen, and then getting back to what it should’ve been."

Liverpool

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp speaking to BT Sport: "I think everybody could see that we understood and that we had to put a completely different shift into the game. The boys did that. We played a lot of good stuff against a hard fighting opposition. Scored the first goal and should’ve scored more goals, from set pieces especially.

"I'm not sure it was their first attack, but Ajax didn’t have a lot. That’s how it is in our situation, anything can happen, but it was an incredible strike from [Mohammed] Kudus.

"It’s like another test. Everybody is hoping you go in the right direction and then you get another setback. You could see the impact of that. The pressing before the goal was much better than after the goal. Only a yard or two but if we press, we have to do it right."

Bayern Munich currently top Group C on six points with Barcelona and Inter Milan on three points each in second and third.

Viktoria Plzen sit bottom after losing both of their opening two matches.

Barcelona

Xavi, Barcelona coach, talking to Movistar TV: "We made six or seven big goal chances but missed them and Bayern took their opportunity. We competed, we played very well and had we scored it would have been a completely different match.

"This is the Champions League though, you need to compete and you try to avoid the marking error at the corner which let them go 1-0 up.

"Losing is a backwards step but we're still in the group. We came here wanting and intending to win. We need to learn from our errors. I think that we produced a good match overall - good enough to win, not draw."

Liverpool

Joel Matip’s 89th minute winner was his 10th goal for Liverpool in all competitions.

The Reds have avoided defeat in all 10 of the matches that the Cameroon defender has scored in winning nine and drawing one.

Ajax

Ajax goalkeeper Remko Pasveer made eight saves against Liverpool.

Since 2003-04, only Jan Oblak for Atletico de Madrid in March 2020 (Nine - including extra-time) has made more saves in a Champions League match at Anfield against Liverpool.

Barcelona

Barcelona midfielder Pedri, via Uefa.com: "This result doesn't tell the true story. Our first half display merited much more than 0-0 at half time. We had opportunities to go ahead.

"But of course if you fail to put chances away against a big rival like Bayern you'll end up paying. They went ahead from our marking mistake at the corner. But it's time to get on with things now - and to remember that we produced a very good first half."

There were just 231 seconds between Lucas Hernandez’ opener (50th minute) and Leroy Sane’s second goal for Bayern Munich (54th minute) against Barcelona, after the German side managed just one shot on target in the first half of the match.

Bayern Munich have scored 30 goals in their 12 Champions League games against Barcelona – only Real Madrid have scored more against an opponent in the competition (34 against Bayern Munich themselves).

Julian Nagelsmann's side have also equalled Real Madrid record (of 30 matches between 2012-2017) for the longest unbeaten run in the Champions League group stages..

Tottenham Hotspur

Spurs boss Antonio Conte speaking to BT Sport: "Difficult result. For sure when you lose the game you’re not happy. I think that the game was imbalanced in the second half. I think we could’ve scored, and we tried to win the game, and then in the last 10 minutes… we can do much better.

"They scored with a corner and then we conceded the second goal after 90 minutes. I think it’s a pity but it was a difficult game for sure. We tried to get a win but in the end we lost the game.

"When you arrive, you have to try to fill the box and to be accurate. I think we had two or three situations that we can do much better in.

"But now we have to rest and think about the next game in the Premier League."

Liverpool's match winner Joel Matip speaking to BT Sport after the game: "I had a few opportunities before, so I was happy that I could score. I wasn’t sure [it was in] to be honest but when I saw the referee, then the emotions came out.

"It was a long and tough game. We were pushing forward the whole team, defending from the first second and then it was a happy end for us."

Liverpool captain Virgil Van Dijk speaking to BT Sport: "It was very important to show a positive reaction. It's not easy to turn it around, but it is a step in the right direction.

"During the game there were great moments. It was very important to win going into the international break.

"I should have scored. We felt dangerous in the set-piece, especially corners, and it was our responsibility to convert one - thankfully Joel [Matip] did.

"We are not listening to the outside world. A lot of ex-football players, who know what we go through, they say a lot to get us down, but we know the last game was very bad and this was a step in the right direction."

Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann has become the first manager to win his first three Champions League matches against Barcelona in the competition’s history.

Liverpool were still not at their very best but it was a good response after the defeat against Napoli.

I think Jurgen Klopp would’ve wanted a better performance, especially in possession. But they've ground out an important three points - now onto a double header with Rangers.
