Liverpool need a performance. The season just hasn't got started. They have been miles off it. It is a big game for them. They haven't started well in the Premier League, but last week's performance against Napoli they were well beaten.

For Liverpool to stay in this competition they have to get a result. Maybe tonight is the night where it all starts - but they need a performance as well as a result as too many of their star players have just not been at it.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says there have been four or five days of "absolute truths" told to his players in a series of clear-the-air meetings following last week's heavy 4-1 defeat against Napoli.

"It was the worst game we played since I was here," Klopp said.

"Eight out of 11 were below their level and the three others were not on a top level, just a normal game. I have to do something, I can't sit there and wait for how we react. Is this the situation I wanted? No. But now you are in it you find it interesting and challenging.

"(We had a) general meeting, showing these situations and they are too obvious. It was not needed to say a lot about it but I did anyway. Did I question the players? Generally, no. In this situation, yes. 'Why would you do that? Why would we do that?'

"When James Milner arrives too late in a challenge and we lose challenges where we would usually win them you know something is wrong. There are four or five days now of absolute truth. We didn't hide anything, we didn't hold back anything, there was no need for that."

Manager Jurgen Klopp says Liverpool fans do not need any advice on observing a minute's silence in memory of the Queen Elizabeth II.

There has been some conjecture since the cancellation of the weekend's Premier League fixtures about how the club's supporters - who have regularly booed the national anthem at recent finals and the FA Community Shield - will respond to a show of respect for the monarchy.

Klopp said it should not even be a subject for debate, "I think it is the right thing to do, but I don't think our people need any kind of advice from me for showing respect," he said.

"There are plenty of examples where people showed exactly the right respect; one which surprised me and I was really proud of that moment was last season when we played Manchester United around a very sad situation with Cristiano Ronaldo's family (fans applauded in sympathy following the death of his newborn son).

"That is what I expect. For me, it is clear that's what we have to do. That's it."

Liverpool have not started a Champions League campaign with two consecutive defeats before, while Ajax have won their last seven group stage matches, scoring 24 goals and conceding just five.

Only Bayern Munich (eight) are on a longer current run of group stage victories than the Amsterdam side.

Liverpool and Ajax have not really faced each other that much before in this competition. The Reds won both of their group games 1-0 during the 2020-21 season.

The only other time they were drawn together goes back to the days of the European Cup during the 1966-67 season. The Dutch champions won the first leg 5-1 before the sides played out a 2-2 draw at Anfield in the return leg.

Tottenham will be kicking themselves. It felt like if they had shown a bit more quality going forward, if they had been a bit more assured they may have won the game.

That is not always the case but in those moments you don't concede.

You make sure you get out of there with at least 0-0 and I am sure Antonio Conte will be very frustrated.
