Granit Xhaka scored the winner as Arsenal edged closer to the last 16 of the Europa League with a narrow win over PSV Eindhoven at Emirates Stadium.

The result leaves Mikel Arteta's side five points clear at the top of Group A after they maintained their 100% record.

It was also the Gunners' eighth successive victory in all competitions and they more than merited it in the rearranged contest that was originally scheduled to be played on 15 September but was postponed because of "severe limitations on police resources" following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

Gabriel Jesus and Bukayo Saka had the pick of Arsenal's opportunities but some errant finishing and the performance of PSV's Argentine goalkeeper Walter Benitez made for a nervy evening.

However, Swiss international Xhaka drove a low effort into the bottom left corner from Takehiro Tomiyasu's cross to finally break the visitor's resistance.

Arsenal will confirm their progression to the knockout stage as group winners if they claim at least a point in the reverse fixture in the Netherlands next week.

    Arsenal

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, speaking to BT Sport, says: "We had really good moments where we dominated against a really good side. We lacked that final pass or shot but we're happy to win the game and we are qualified which is the first step.

"The difference between finishing first and second is big and we want to get the job done [next week].

"In Europe you have to control the opponent. They are very talented, used to winning and the amount of goals they have scored is incredible - we were really mature."

On Granit Xhaka's goal: "It was a great goal with the right foot, a half volley, he is getting in these positions every game that's why he is scoring the goals."

On Bukayo Saka, who needed treatment but then came back on: "I think he will be OK."

  4. Xhaka 'really important' for Arsenal, says Keownpublished at 20:19 British Summer Time 20 October 2022

    FT: Arsenal 1-0 PSV Eindhoven

Some more from ex-Arsenal defender Martin Keown on BT Sport, talking about Granit Xhaka.

Keown says: "With the role he has, it has given him a lot of licence to move forwards. The quality of the finish was outstanding, the technique was really good and he is going to enjoy that for sometime.

"It was his right foot, his swinger, never scored with Arsenal with his right foot.

"We know he has had a difficult time at the club but that's in the past and he's doing well, but he is really important in the side for Arsenal's success.

"If they are successful and win a trophy, he will get another contract."

  5. 'At the moment we are very dangerous'published at 20:13 British Summer Time 20 October 2022

    Arsenal

Match-winner Granit Xhaka, speaking to BT Sport, says: "We had chance after chance and we didn't have the luck to score earlier but we had the passion to keep the ball, keep creating the chances and I think we deserved the win.

"In the first half we did a lot of pressure, Everyone who comes here is playing similar to PSV, we knew they had the quality to kill us on the counter attack but we did amazing.

"I'm so happy to score. I don't know when I scored for the last time with the right foot but so happy. It doesn't matter which foot, or who scores.

"It gives us confidence and on to the next one. When you win games you have to be happy. Everything is going well at the moment but for us it is not a surprise, we're doing a lot of work.

"We win and lose as a team and at the moment we are very dangerous. We wanted to go through and are very happy."

"Mikel Arteta gets the job done and it's really important to make sure they are in charge of this group.

    And that's it.

Granit Xhaka's lovely 15-yard half volley gives the hosts the victory and it is one that takes them into the knockout stages of the Europa League.

It doesn't confirm them winning the group just yet, but they will definitely finish in the top two of Group A.

Arsenal only need to avoid defeat in the rematch in the Netherlands next week to jump straight into the last 16 and avoid a two-legged play-off against a side dropping down from the Champions League.
