    Only 286 to go.

    FT: England 2-1 USA

Not forgetting as well that tonight was a night of celebration for 50 years of England women's teams.

The players from the very first England team in 1972 were honoured before the game with special caps - they didn't receive a cap for their first international match back then and have finally been given the recognition they deserve.

Great scenes at Wembley and you can read more on that here.

It's difficult not to get carried away after a result like that. We already know this England team are special and to have played like they did tonight just shows there is no fear in the squad.

It wasn't perfect, but they have oodles of confidence and that bodes well for England fans next year.

  5. 'I'm never going to question what Sarina does'published at 22:17 British Summer Time 7 October 2022

    FT: England 2-1 USA

Ian Wright speaking on ITV: "The USA are a very good team but what I think was so good about us today, was that we still played out from the back.

"If we can play out against USA then we can play out against anyone.

"We stuck to our guns in that respect and I really like that about Sarina Wiegman.

"I'm never going to question what Sarina does because whatever she does is alright by me!"

  6. 'That was really intense'published at 22:15 British Summer Time 7 October 2022

    England

England manager Sarina Wiegman speaking to ITV Sport: "That was really intense, just what we wanted. USA played as we expected, they gave us hard times sometimes. I thought we played well in moments, better first half than second.

On Lauren Hemp: "She was enjoying herself and giving them a lot of problems. It helps that she scored a goal!"

On whether they are now among the World Cup favourites: "The target is there all the time! Whatever happens we know this is just a starting point for the World Cup, but it shows you are at a very high level"

On if she was happy with England's defending: "I understand the question, sometimes we were very open and we know the USA are very quick. But we wanted to play a game with the high press. We will review and see if we can do better, but this is how we want to play"

On VAR: "I wouldn't say it was luck, it was very honest."

    England

England goal scorer Lauren Hemp speaking to ITV Sport: "I thought we did really well, especially in the first half. We created a lot of chances and were fantastic off the ball as well. We all put in a shift today and it was a great result. Important we stay grounded now, another game on Tuesday and we're looking forward to that.

On playing No 9: "I think most of the time I don't know what I'm doing! I had a free role to roam where I wanted, I was in the right place at the right time. I'm happy with any goal.

"It's great preparation, it's important to stay grounded. We have a lot of months, a lot of games to prepare for so that we're in the best possible condition."

On the whole, England were worthy winners because they were the better team.

Going off chances created, the USA edged it and England got away with a few chances that weren't executed well by them.

The performance level hit the heights at times that got them the European title!

What a game, what an occasion.

Bit of concentration required from England to deal with a USA set-piece.

Rose Lavelle swings it in but it's picked up by England.

Lauren James attempts to run it away from her penalty area but Lavelle intercepts and pings another cross into the box. It falls to the feet of Sophia Smith but she can't make anything of it.

England breathe a sigh of relief.

What a ball from Lucy Bronze, stunning.

She spots Ella Toone on the far side of the box in loads of space but Toone hits it on the volley and skies it over the bar.

She had more time than she thought, there.

For me, this game ranks highly.

England have had 22 wins under Wiegman but how many of those games have been against much lower opposition?

This was going to be the biggest test against a very strong USA.
