  2. Will derby wounds run deep for Man Utd?published at 10:46 British Summer Time 6 October 2022

David Moyes. Louis van Gaal. Jose Mourinho. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Ralf Rangnick. And now Erik ten Hag. The Dutchman has joined the growing club of Manchester United managers since Sir Alex Ferguson to lose their first Manchester derby

So no real surprise or shame there. The manner of it, though, is cause for huge concern.

A return to the Champions League was always the priority this season, but the City defeat is a reality check and evidence the club still has a long way to go.

The players found the right response to their hammering at Brentford and beat Liverpool in their next Premier League game.

This time they go to Omonia Nicosia in the Europa League, then face a trip to Everton.

Can they react again and start another winning run, or will these wounds run deeper?

    Manchester United

Harry Maguire and Raphael Varane will miss Manchester United's Europa League trip to Omonia Nicosia on Thursday.

An injury sustained on England duty meant captain Maguire missed Sunday's Manchester derby defeat, while fellow centre-back Varane limped out of the 6-3 thrashing with an ankle injury.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Donny van de Beek remain unavailable.

United are second in Group F before their trip to Cyprus, having won one and lost one of their two matches.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag says Cristiano Ronaldo is unhappy at not playing regularly.

Ronaldo, 37, has started one Premier League game and two Europa League matches for United so far this season.

He was an unused substitute in Sunday's 6-3 defeat by Manchester City, with Ten Hag saying the decision was "out of respect for his big career".

"He's not happy that he wasn't playing Sunday" said Ten Hag before Thursday's Europa League game at Omonia Nicosia.

"Of course, he wants to play and he's annoyed when he's not playing. It's clear."

Women's World Cup qualifiers: How they work

All being well, Beth Mead will be on the plane with the rest of the England squad for the next Women's World Cup, which takes place in Australia and New Zealand in July and August 2023.

Wales and Scotland could join England at the World Cup if they can make it through the play-offs.

Both play tonight, with Wales at home to Bosnia-Herzegovina (19:15 BST) and Scotland host Austria (19:35 BST).

The above video explains the complicated play-off process.

In a nutshell, victory for both sides will see them progress to a final play-off clash.

The two best-ranked play-off final winners will secure places at the 2023 World Cup, with the other victorious side going into the inter-confederation play-offs, which will take place in New Zealand in February.

The 10-team inter-confederation play-offs will also feature Chinese Taipei, Thailand, Cameroon, Senegal, Haiti, Panama, Chile, Paraguay, and Papua New Guinea.

He joined Spurs in November 2021 as part of Antonio Conte’s backroom staff, having previously held roles at Juventus, Catania, JS Suning, GZ Evergrande and AC Ajaccio.

  8. Arsenal's Mead named England Women's Player of the Yearpublished at 10:12 British Summer Time 6 October 2022

Arsenal's Beth Mead has been named as England Women’s Player of the Year for 2021-22.

After a disappointing campaign for both club and country in 2020-21, which ended with her being left out of the Team GB squad for the Tokyo Olympics, the 27-year-old bounced back with a bang last season.

Voted Arsenal's player of the season, she racked up 11 goals and eight assists in a campaign in which the Gunners came painstakingly close to clinching the title, missing out by just one point to Chelsea.

That was before the winger became a household name during Euro 2022, claiming the Golden Boot and player of the tournament as the Lionesses won their first major tournament.

  9. 'Football can be brutal, but calm seems to have prevailed - for now'published at 10:00 British Summer Time 6 October 2022

    Colin Fray, BBC Radio Nottingham

Since Monday night, Steve Cooper’s future has been the subject of many a column inch, but it appears - at least in the short term - the club’s owners have shown him some loyalty after last season’s exploits.

Football can be a brutal business, and loyalty doesn’t often appear in it – so, while appreciating that things could change again in the not-too-distant future, calm does seem, for now, to have prevailed.

And the fact that Cooper will be in the dugout for Monday’s game against Aston Villa will please what seems to be an overwhelming majority of supporters.

Even while 3-0 down and being hammered just down the road at Leicester, the fans were loud and proud, and belting out Cooper’s name. Rarely, if ever, have I known a groundswell of support like it for a manager under pressure.

Wolves are looking for a new manager after sacking Bruno Lage following Saturday's defeat at West Ham and of course Thomas Tuchel has already been replaced by Graham Potter at Chelsea.

Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper faces and uncertain future after Monday's loss at Leicester, whose boss Brendan Rodgers has also been under huge pressure.

And what of the situation on the south coast with reports that Ralph Hasenhuttl is on the brink of losing his job at Southampton?

It feels as if we could be moving into sacking season - but which coach will end up where?

And if you could pick, which manager would you like in charge of your club?

  11. 'If Lopetegui finally ends up at Wolves six years on, he'll find a very different club'published at 09:49 British Summer Time 6 October 2022

    Mike Taylor, BBC Radio WM

    Wolves

From the press box graphicImage source, BBC Sport

The odds on Julen Lopetegui becoming the new head coach of Wolves shortened quickly this week, as doubts emerged over how long he would remain in charge of Sevilla.

Lopetegui was duly punished for Sevilla’s poor start following Wednesday night's defeat at home to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.

And the timing may prove fortuitous, allowing Wolves to fulfil a six-year courtship.

Lopetegui has said that, in 2016, he and Wolves’ then-prospective owners, Fosun, “worked hand in hand” as he was lined up to become manager. Just as Fosun was completing the takeover, Lopetegui became Spain coach instead.

Rather than work with Kenny Jackett, Fosun instead plumped for the altogether more colourful Walter Zenga. In terms of a gearchange between the public styles of successive managers, that remains hard to beat.

If appointed, Lopetegui would find a rather different club from six years ago.

According to today's gossip and the earlier back pages Southampton are set to sack manager Ralph Hasenhuttl after the club's poor start to the season.

Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper is apparently a potential candidate to replace Hasenhuttl at St Mary's.

Just to complicate matters Forest face competition from Leicester City to land Rafael Benitez as their new manager, if they decide to sack Cooper and the Foxes decide to get rid of Brendan Rodgers.

And of course Wolves have a post to fill as well.

  14. FIFA chief pushing workers' rights agendapublished at 09:27 British Summer Time 6 October 2022

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has been heavily scrutinised around the issue of workers' rights in Qatar ahead of the World Cup.

There is a massive discrepancy between the Qatar authorities and Amnesty International around how many workers have died in the construction of stadiums for this year's showpiece event.

Infantino is adamant FIFA have been a positive partner around Qatar and yesterday spoke to Gilbert Houngbo, director general of the International Labour Organisation, about the issue.

"We have made significant progress in recent years through our collaboration together on the conditions of workers in Qatar and I am looking forward to a more formalised cooperation between our institutions on a global scale," said Infantino afterwards.

  15. Guardiola dismisses Haaland release clause rumours as 'not true'published at 09:21 British Summer Time 6 October 2022

    Chris Bevan
    BBC Sport

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola says reports in Spain that Erling Haaland's contract contains a special release clause for him to join Real Madrid in 2024 are "not true".

Speaking after the 22-year-old Norway striker had continued his incredible start at City by hitting two goals against Copenhagen in the Champions League, Guardiola denied rumours that Madrid have engineered an exclusive agreement to sign him.

"It's not true," Guardiola said. "He has not got a release clause for Real Madrid, or any other team.

"Am I annoyed by the rumours? No, absolutely not. Rumours, and people talking, you cannot control it - so always we have to worry about what we can control.

"The important thing is that he has adapted [since joining City] really well. I have the feeling he is incredibly happy here, and this is the most important thing."

  16. Steve Bruce on the brink at West Brompublished at 09:16 British Summer Time 6 October 2022

    Preston 1-0 West Brom

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

Steve Bruce's tenure as West Brom's manager is hanging by the slenderest of threads.

The Baggies were supposed to be challenging for promotion to the Premier League this season but a botched transfer window has left Bruce with an unbalanced squad.

However, they still should be doing better than recent results and last night's defeat at Preston leaves them in the relegation zone.

West Brom owner Guochuan Lai must decide whether to get rid of Bruce now, knowing the atmosphere around the Hawthorns will not be great ahead of Saturday's Championship match with Luton if he fails to act.

Lai doesn't attend games but he also knows any chance of selling the club for close to the £200m he paid for it in 2016 depends on them being in the top flight.

  19. Celtic's CL bid dented by Leipzigpublished at 09:02 British Summer Time 6 October 2022

    RB Leipzig 3-1 Celtic

Celtic's hopes of progressing in the Champions League were of course dented after RB Leipzig eventually triumphed in a frantic and entertaining contest.

Jota's second-half equaliser hauled the Scottish champions level after Christopher Nkunku had put Leipzig ahead in a fiercely contested first half in a packed Red Bull Arena.

But their good work was undone when goalkeeper Joe Hart gave the ball straight to Dominik Szoboszlai, who teed up Andre Silva to score the first of his two goals.

The Portuguese striker rounded off a brilliant Leipzig move to ensure the German side leapfrog Celtic in Group F, with Ange Postecoglou's team still searching for their first win before a re-match in Glasgow next week as they now sit bottom of their group.

    RB Leipzig 3-1 Celtic

Celtic 'not here for a pat on the back' - Greg Taylor

Celtic's high-intensity style has caused problems for Real Madrid, Shakhtar Donetsk, and RB Leipzig in the Champions League but ultimately it has been combined with a lack of a killer edge and mistakes at key moments.

Against Leipzig, it was an error from Celtic's most experienced player Joe Hart - who passed straight to Dominik Szoboszlai to allow the German side to score their crucial second goal - which turned the game.

But manager Ange Posteocglou believes his side's overall approach after Jota's equaliser was more to blame.

"A mistake is a mistake," he said. "It's not about that. It's about what happened before that. We kept passing it back to him for no reason. You're doing what you think is safe but that's not really who we are.

"Once we got level we almost wanted to settle for that. I could see it coming. If it wasn't Joe making a mistake, it would have been somebody else."
