    Aston Villa 1-0 Arsenal

Aston Villa have taken the lead in three games this season and won them all. Can that continue today?

That is their first goal against Arsenal, who have won their last seven away WSL games without conceding too.

    Kirsty Hanson

    Hello!

Aston Villa work the ball through midfield with Kenza Dali spreading it out wide for Kirsty Hanson on the left wing.

Hanson, who is on loan from Manchester United, fires a speculative left-footed half-volley across Manuela Zinsberger and it finds the bottom corner.

Should Zinsberger have done better? Probably. She was never settled.

    Aston Villa 0-0 Arsenal

This is less convincing from Hannah Hampton, though.

She comes a long way for the corner, but gets nowhere near it, and the ball hits Rafaelle and goes over the bar.

    A double warning for Villa.

  4. GOOD SAVE!published at 5 mins

    Aston Villa 0-0 Arsenal

It only takes one attack for a side with the quality that Arsenal have.

They'd barely touched the ball yet, but they stride forward with Vivianne Miedema.

Stina Blacksteinus drags the defenders around and that opens up a shooting opportunity for Miedema but Hannah Hampton is able to push behind for a corner at full stretch.

    Good save from Hampton.

    Aston Villa 0-0 Arsenal

Carla Ward will be looking for a response from her Aston Villa side after their 5-0 defeat at Manchester United last weekend.

They've started well. They are passing the ball around nicely, and they almost find Alisha Lehmann with a ball in behind but Manuela Zinsberger is out quickly to clear for Arsenal.

Arsenal boss Jonas Eidevall was asked in his pre-match press conference this week if we'd ever had a situation similar to Vivianne Miedema requesting a break.

“Not really. Have I had the situation with players having tournaments in the summer, not having time off and the playing schedule being like this? Not really either. It’s kind of a new situation," said Eidevall.

“The honest answer, though - and I think this is a weakness of me and many people - is that if a player or person working with us doesn’t make us aware of how they’re feeling, it’s really tough to take those decisions.

"Sometimes that’s not the starting point when you’re thinking about things and that makes it difficult when you’re dealing with humans.

"You have to rely on them telling you the information that will allow you to make the decision. It’s that relationship and that openness, that transparency that they feel confident enough to share that information with you.

"I haven’t done it before and probably wouldn’t have done it if the player hadn’t asked."

Netherlands striker Vivianne Miedema has stepped up for Arsenal in the last three games.

She struggled at the start of the season, perhaps due to the amount of football she'd played or her ongoing recovery from testing positive for Covid-19 at the Euros in the summer, but after taking a break to "rest and recharge" she has looked much more like her old self.

Her three goals in the last three games - two of which have been winners - have come after Beth Mead has been ruled out for the season with injury.

Miedema has stood up when needed.

  11. 'We need to kill games earlier'published at 16:06 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December 2022

Aston Villa v Arsenal (16:15 GMT)

It has been a solid start to the season from Arsenal.

They have won seven of their eight WSL games, and were blighted by injuries in their defeat by Manchester United. They are also in pole position to qualify from their Champions League group with two games remaining.

They have won their last two games - against Everton in the WSL and Juventus in the Champions League - by one-goals margins and Jonas Eidevall has been speaking about the importance of that, but also the dangers.

“We need to do that better because now we sit here with two 1-0 victories [Juventus and Everton] and we’re all happy about that," said Eidevall, who joined the Gunners in 2021.

"But in both of these games, the opposition teams had free-kicks in the final minute that they were not successful with.

"We all know that the more times you let that happen, the more they will be successful. Then you will question why you dropped points.

“We must not be in that situation - we need to kill the games earlier. I’m never going to be the sort of manager who says ‘we’re winning 1-0 and I don’t want to risk anything.’ I want us to continue to play and attack because I know, in the long run, it’s better to score a second goal than defend your lead.”

  12. 'Moments like last weekend can help in the long term'published at 16:04 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December 2022

Aston Villa v Arsenal (16:15 GMT)

It has been a solid start to the season from Aston Villa.

They started well, before a blip, but had rediscovered their form before last week's 5-0 thrashing at Manchester United.

They are currently sixth in the table after West Ham's win, and could go back into fifth with three points in this game.

Manager Carla Ward has been asked about the reaction from her side to that defeat last weekend.

“This weekend will be all about competing with one of Europe’s best, because we can all agree that last weekend we didn’t give the best account of ourselves," said Ward.

"This weekend will be about showing what we’re all about. We’re very tight-knit and this is probably going to be the first big test of the group - how close are we and how will we react?

“The way this group have delved into it, held each other and themselves accountable, been there for each other this week and had some tough conversations has put us in a really good place.

"This is an ambitious group who want to look after each other and progress. Sometimes moments like that help you a little bit more in the long term.”
