  4. Can Cowley strike up the Pompey chimes?published at 19:45 Greenwich Mean Time 4 November 2022

It is now 14 years since the greatest moment in Portsmouth's modern history when they won the FA Cup, beating Cardiff City in the final.

The years since then have not been too kind to Pompey and they have spent the last decade outside the top two divisions.

Currently fifth in League One, with games in hand on the teams above them, they would love to get back to the Championship after a series of near-misses.

Danny Cowley is the man in charge and away from league duty, he has plenty of cup pedigree to call upon and will know all about the dangers of a potential cup upset this evening, with Portsmouth one of the prime scalps in the opening two rounds.

Back in 2017, he masterminded (then in the National League) Lincoln City's run to the quarter-finals as the Imps claimed four league scalps - including that of Premier League Burnley - before losing to eventual winners Arsenal.

This is only the second time that Hereford have reached this stage of the FA Cup since the club was reformed in 2014 after the previous incarnation - Hereford United - was wound up in the High Court.

After restarting in the ninth tier Midland League Premier Division, the Bulls had three successive promotions to the National League North where they have been since 2018.

Edgar Street will be packed to the rafters for this one on a night that is sure to be tinged with emotion following the death of Ronnie Radford.

Although in the words of manager Josh Gowling, "it's just another game" as the Bulls try to reach the second round of the FA Cup for the first time in five years.

Our other FA Cup first-round tie is an all-League One affair, as third-placed Sheffield Wednesday host a Morecambe side who are in the relegation zone.

All of that gets forgotten about for 90 minutes but, interestingly, bookmakers give non-league Hereford more chance of upsetting Portsmouth than the Shrimps winning at Hillsborough.

Derek Adams' Morecambe have reached the third round in the past two seasons, losing at Chelsea and Tottenham, while Wednesday have failed to score in their past four home FA Cup ties.

Remembering Ronnie Radford's remarkable FA Cup goal

Those were the words of the BBC's John Motson to describe one of the most iconic goals in FA Cup history.

The day Hereford United (as they were then) toppled the mighty Newcastle United thanks to an equaliser from Ronnie Radford, and then a winner from Ricky George.

Radford's goal summed up everything that we love about this competition as the underdog produced something extraordinary to slay the giant. A moment never to be forgotten.

It's a goal that has been recreated in parks, back gardens and playgrounds in the 50 years since. And mention the name Ronnie Radford to football fans of a certain generation and memories of the white number 11 shirt, the muddy pitch and boys in parka coats invading the pitch come flooding back.

Sadly, two days ago, Radford passed away aged 79.

Somewhat fittingly, the BBC cameras are at Hereford's Edgar Street tonight as the club pays tribute to its most famous player, with the new generation attempting to write a fresh chapter in the Bulls' FA Cup story.
