The four Celtic players to enter the attacking third the most tonight were Moritz Jenz (19), Cameron Carter-Vickers (14), Josip Juranovic (12) and Greg Taylor (10).

That tells the story of plenty of corners, plenty of overlapping and, ultimately, plenty of frustration for Ange Postecoglou's side.

Looking ahead to next week's trip to Real Madrid, Ange Postecoglou adds: "We keep chipping away. It's another chance to test ourselves [in the Bernabeu] against a very good team.

"We set out to play football a certain way at this level, and try to be as bold as we can be. Credit to the players, they've done that.

"All I ask of them is to test themselves and measure ourselves against the best."

"Look, it was a tight game", he said at the post-match press conference. "For the most part, we controlled the game well, played in the areas we wanted to, we minimised their threat and got the goal. At that stage we were in control. They scored a great goal on the counter-attack, which was disappointing for us.

"We're disappointed with the outcome, but in terms of the players' effort and what they put into it, I couldn't ask any more of them.

"Wins and goals at this level are hard-earned. We earned the goal tonight, and it's great for Giorgos [Giakoumakis].

"We know the areas we've fallen short in this campaign. That only comes with experience and learning and improvement, that's our task - take what we've learnt this year and improve next year.

"It's hard to just come in and make an impact. My job is to make sure we're here every year."

Shakhtar Donetsk manager Igor Jovicevic can be very pleased with his team tonight.

He has a lot of young homegrown players and they certainly didn't look overawed by the occasion.

Beat RB Leipzig in Warsaw next week and they are in the last 16 of the Champions League.

Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou tells BT Sport: "It was a tight game. A lot on the line for both clubs. I thought we were pretty much in control. They caught us on the counter and scored.

"We had a chance with Kyogo - we miss. They had a big chance - they miss. It was a typical, tight Champions League game, but we couldn't get the result we wanted.

"There's no magic formula, there's just experience and continually striving to improve. The boys in there are flat. I think that shows where our ambitions lie. We want to make an impact in this competition, but it's our first time in five years and we've fallen short.

"There's some areas that we need to improve, but it's not anything that can happen very quickly. We want to be a Champions League football club and that only happens with continual presence in this competition.

"You can't go five years without being here and then expect to come in and make an impact at this level. That's our task. That's our challenge."

Talking to BT Sport, Celtic midfielder Matt O'Riley says: "It's a disappointing night and a disappointing Champions League campaign. I'm a bit gutted for our fans especially, who gave us a crazy amount of support. We'll try to be back next year with more ruthlessness in front of goal.

"I had one at the end that was a big chance. To be honest, if that's in the Scottish league, I reckon we score them. Maybe it's just a bit of anxiety, I'm not sure."

Celtic goalscorer Giorgos Giakoumakis tells BT Sport: "When we started the group stages, we were dreaming bigger. We were dreaming that we could pass to the next stage.

"We've had some good performances but unfortunately, we couldn't combine them with good results and more points, so that's why we didn't pass through.

"Even when you score your first goal in the Champions League - something you've been dreaming of since you were a little boy - in the end, you can't be happy, because you want to succeed with your team.

"We gave everything. We have to move forward. We keep moving and keep going.

"We have to win the league, that's our target this year. We have to win the league so we can play Champions League again next year."

Kyogo had the best chance to add to Giorgos Giakoumakis' first-half strike but fluffed his shot in a one-v-one situation.

Celtic still have a trip to the Santiago Bernabeu to come next week. Real Madrid losing tonight means the Spanish giants cannot coast through that one.

RB Leipzig are just one point behind in second place, while Shakhtar can leapfrog the Bundesliga side with a win in Warsaw.

Rodrygo knocked in a late penalty for the reigning champions but the German side hold on for a famous win.

A very muted atmosphere inside Celtic Park at the end of the match. Few in the crowd could argue that Shakhtar didn't deserve at least a point. Indeed, had the Ukrainians not missed two glaring chances, they'd be leaving with all three points and not just the one.

The long wait for a home win in the Champions League for Celtic goes on as they are consigned to last place in Group F.

Shakhtar Donetsk are still in the hunt for a place in the last 16 thanks to a cracking goal from Mykhaylo Mudryk, who was the game's star man.

It could have been worse for Celtic since Danylo Sikan was guilty of missing an incredible sitter.
