The performances have been really good in the group stage. I don't think it's justified that Celtic only have one point.

    Celtic v Shakhtar Donetsk (20:00)

Shakhtar opened with a stunning 4-1 win away to RB Leipzig before drawing with Celtic and picked up another point in their home joust with Real Madrid.

The Ukrainians looked like they were on their way to a famous victory until Antonio Rudiger found a 95th-minute equaliser.

Their only defeat this season came at the Santiago Bernabeu, with Real having to work hard for their 2-1 success.

Celtic's solitary point came from a 1-1 draw away to Shakhtar Donetsk in Warsaw.

It was a game Ange Postecoglou's side really should have won, having spurned several good opportunities in front of goal and having 16 shots to Shakhtar's five.

Home form has been something of a problem for Celtic in this tournament of late...

Real Madrid and RB Leipzig have won in Glasgow in this campaign and their current streak of seven straight defeats on home turf is the joint-longest in the competition, along with a Monaco run ending in 2018-19.

  8. Celtic aim for hat-trick of home wins against Shakhtarpublished at 19:06 British Summer Time 25 October 2022

    Celtic v Shakhtar Donetsk (20:00)

Shakhtar have been to Celtic Park twice before in the Champions League and were beaten on both occasions.

In November 2004, Alan Thompson scored the only goal on a night when the visitors were shown two red cards.

Three years on, Celtic recovered from the loss of an early goal to prevail thanks an equaliser from Jiri Jarosik and Massimo Donati's last-gasp strike.

Shakhtar also have a full-back called Taylor - no relation to Greg.

Lucas Taylor reversed the trend of Brazilians leaving the club to join on loan from PAOK in Greece.

The only other non-Ukrainian is Lassina Traore, the speedy Burkina Faso forward.

Oleksandr Zubkov has scored in his last two appearances in the Champions League, both against Real Madrid, which is not too shabby at all.

Former Celtic winger Marian Shved is missing through injury but rising star Mykhaylo Mudryk, linked with Arsenal and Newcastle, is there and he's got two Champions League goals as well.

  11. Celtic start with Kyogo & Giakoumakispublished at 18:56 British Summer Time 25 October 2022

    Celtic v Shakhtar Donetsk (20:00)

Following Saturday's thrilling 4-3 win at Hearts, Celtic make five changes in what looks like a really attacking side.

Once again the full-backs are rotated with Josip Juranovic and Greg Taylor restored, while Kyogo Furuhashi is back, along with Sead Haksabanovic and Liel Abada.

That means Kyogo and Giorgos Giakoumakis play together, which is rare. The Greek is sure to play through the middle, so will we see the Japanese wide on the left or in a central role supporting the striker?

Anthony Ralston, Alexandro Bernabei, Aaron Mooy, James Forrest and Daizen Maeda are the players dropping to the bench.

  13. Celtic not far away, says Hartpublished at 18:45 British Summer Time 25 October 2022

    Celtic v Shakhtar Donetsk (20:00)

Goalkeeper Joe Hart feels Celtic are close to getting some success in the Champions League as most of his team-mates grapple with the competition for the first time.

"There is no real secret, it’s just fine lines and fine margins and huge moments separate the games," he said on Monday.

"I don’t think it’s been down to inexperience that we haven’t necessarily progressed.

"It’s just been moments that we haven’t seized and our opposition has managed to do that. But we are not far away."

Shakhtar Donetsk’s director of football Darijo Srna is an absolute legend at the club, having spent 15 years playing there, winning seven titles, five cups and the 2009 Uefa Cup.

The 40-year-old former Croatia international was talking to BBC Radio 4's Today Programme this morning.

"We are sending positive emotions to our citizens in Ukraine," he said. "We have five points in the Champions League. We lost 14 players, we lost the coach, but we are still alive.

"We are showing very nice and very quality football in the Champions League even in the championship and we will continue like this. In Scotland it's always difficult: an amazing stadium, amazing fans, but we will try to do our best to not lose the game because if we get one point we will go into Europe."

  17. Shakhtar coach wary of Celtic energypublished at 18:24 British Summer Time 25 October 2022

    Celtic v Shakhtar Donetsk (20:00)

Visiting head coach Igor Jovicevic was highly complimentary about Celtic during yesterday's media conference.

"They must win so we have accounted for this factor," he said. "It will be a pleasure to play at a legendary stadium.

"But we believe we can make another miracle. We will play our football and carry out our plan and we will make chances.

"But we must account for the energy because all starts are frenetic and high tempo from Celtic. It’s tough to play against them.

"I spoke to some Real Madrid players who said the same. Remember in the first half Celtic had three chances against them and they might have led 3-0.

"We know that but we will be mentally strong to suffer because it will be a very tough game for us. Without doubt, Celtic are favourites."

Celtic have been in all of the games. You can look at it and say one point from four games isn't very good. This is a tough group, they've played some good stuff, and created chances, but they haven't taken them.

  20. Is this the night Celtic get rewards?published at 18:11 British Summer Time 25 October 2022

    Celtic v Shakhtar Donetsk (20:00)

Ange Postecoglou isn't going to change his attacking approach any time soon as the Celtic boss seeks his first win in this competition.

"My thought process around this whole thing is that if you keep putting yourself in a position of playing the kind of football we want and creating chances then eventually you get the rewards," he said yesterday.

"That’s the key to this game, we have got to tackle it in the same manner, particularly at home. If we can create the same number of chances then it’s about converting them.

"From my perspective, it’s a lot better being in that sort of situation then trying to figure out how we are going to create chances."
