    South Shields manager Kevin Phillips is a legend of north east football, but despite having graced the Premier League and international football, he told Alex Scott on BBC One even he is feeling the effects of the occasion today.

    "If you haven't got butterflies or nerves then you shouldn't be playing - I have got all sorts of emotions in me, but today is about the players. Days like this are what you play football for," he said.

    Seventh tier South Shields have a some star quality in their midst in terms of manager Kevin Philips, the former Premier League golden boot winner and Sunderland legend.

    Phillips took over at the Mariners in in January in his first managerial role, and spoke to BBC Sport about settling into the job.

    "I always wanted a chance at management but to manage at this level was maybe not something I had dreamed of doing," Philips said.

    "But then you see the infrastructure and ambition the club has, which people will see when they visit the ground.

    "I'm absolutely loving it and I love being out on the grass with the players.

    "It has been a massive learning curve and it can be stressful and I have certainly gone a lot greyer.

    "But I've been in football my whole life - I don't know anything else - and I think I am good at managing players and individuals."

    Seventh-tier South Shields have already had a bit of a mountain to climb just to get to this point in the FA Cup, having come through four rounds of qualifying.

    This is only the second time in the team's history they have made it to the first round - they lost to Cheltenham in 2020-21 - with League One side Forest Green the highest-ranked team they ever faced in a competitive match.

    Forest Green, meanwhile, are the team usually classed as the underdogs and were only promoted to the third tier this season.

    You have to go back to 2019 when they last won an FA Cup match however when they beat Billericay 4-0 in the first round, and have lost five of their last six matches away in the competition.
