Little over two years ago Maziar Kouhyar thought his dreams of making it as a professional footballer were over.

He was working in a fast-food restaurant with his playing career seemingly over after a serious knee injury ended his time with Walsall.

Today, Kouhyar is out of the chicken shop and thanks to a job selling is back on the pitch, this time with York City.

"Football is physically hard but you don't mind because you love it. But working at KFC was draining because you're constantly working," Kouhyar - the first Afghanistan-born footballer to play professionally in the Britain, told BBC Sport.

"I was at a stage where I hadn't played football for so long and I had to find work and earn some money.

"Mentally I was in a very tough place. All I ever wanted to do was play football."

You could be forgiven for thinking this is a picture from Eastern Europe in the build-up to a mid-afternoon Thursday kick-off in some far flung land.

No, it's the International Stadium at Gateshead. Ideal for athletics, less so for football, but Gateshead will hope to find inspiration there this evening.

Level on points at the bottom with Torquay in the National League, they must try and forget about that as they welcome League Two Stevenage up to the North East.

  20. HALF-TIMEpublished at 14:50 Greenwich Mean Time 5 November 2022

    Bolton 0-2 Barnsley

A dream half for Barnsley. A bad one for Bolton. An own goal and Adam Phillips' excellent second has the visitors in real control.

Can the Trotters find something in the second half to keep them in the FA Cup?
