Jacob Ramsey got turned on the halfway line and just saw some space and drove into it. He picked Ollie Watkins who had just drifted off the shoulder of Harry Maguire.

Watkins just lifted the ball over Martin Dubravka.

It was a pretty drab first half but now we've got a game on our hands.

Anthony Rayment: Not surprising these games are really poor right now. World Cup squads have been announced and players are getting injured. Everyone's mind is on the beach.....not holiday beach but the sand in Qatar.

Looking at the benches, Christian Eriksen and Anthony Elanga have the quality to make a difference for United, as do Emiliano Buendia and Leon Bailey for Villa.

Don't worry though, the second half will be much, much better.

It feels like penalties from the way the first half has gone. Neither team has been prepared to over stretch themselves because they don't want to give anything away. But in doing so we've got to half time without anyone having laid a punch.

Unless somebody does something special in the second half it's looking like penalties.

That was not good.

There was barely any excitement and too many passes went astray.

The second half has to be better. Hasn't it?

We'll have penalties if it's level at the end of 90 minutes so there will at least be some drama later on.

But let's be honest, that first half was pretty rubbish. Goalless, with only Scott McTominay's header off his own goal line from Douglas Luiz's inswinging corner the only thing worth mentioning.

Manchester United get a free-kick close to the touchline but Robin Olsen does well to get two hands to the cross from Bruno Fernandes and punch it well clear.

Villa captain John McGinn is then lucky to not have his name taken for a late tackle on Diogo Dalot.

Possession lost stats show the quality of football we've seen tonight. It's 62 times possession lost from the hosts and 60 for the visitors.

Scrappy and not much to get excited about so far.

Harry Maguire joins Scott McTominay in the book with the England defender, named in Gareth Southgate's World Cup squad earlier today, late to the ball and taking out Ollie Watkins. Clumsy, but not malicious.

Gareth: People seem surprised that the quality of football is bad. Have you never watched the likes of McTominay and Van de Beek play before?

Unai Emery is guiding his Aston Villa players through this game.

He is not doing the histrionic pointing, just ushering players into the right positions using more subtle hand gestures.

The meaning behind his applause for his defenders as another home attack petered out was obvious to everyone.

It's a yellow card for Scott McTominay and absolutely deserved with a cynical shoulder charge as Ashley Young looked to move down the right wing.

But Ezri Konsa needlessly blocks off Victor Lindelof just as the free-kick was taken. Waste.

Marcus Rashford lines up a free-kick from 30 yards out and gets loads of power on it, but the Villa wall does its job, stays strong and blocks it.

Aston Villa have grown into the game, Manchester United have still had more of the ball but Villa have had more shots and certainly more opportunities.

United just seem to have lost their way a bit, they're giving the ball away cheaply.

Villa defender Calum Chambers gives the ball away sloppily just outside his own penalty area but he is not punished. It eventually falls to Fred but the cross is no good from the Brazil World Cup man and it drifts out.

This has been a bright spell for Villa, with that Douglas Luiz corner headed off the line by Scott McTominay the closest either side has come to scoring.

Premier League managers have been expressing their dissatisfaction at having to deal with a winter World Cup.

But some clubs will be affected more than others.

Bearing in mind the winner tonight will play a fourth round game a couple of days after the Qatar event finishes, it's worth noting up to six of Manchester United's starting line-up may be going. Villa will have none of their starters away.
