Colin Reardon: 25 minutes gone and the quality from both sides has been appalling!

Scott Collumbell: The football on display here has been shocking from both teams.

    Manchester United 0-0 Aston Villa

Villa's Ashley Young tries a stunning volley from 20 yards out against his former side, but it is over the top and always rising. He made 261 appearances for United and nearly grabbed a goal then against them. What a story that would have been.

So close from Douglas Luiz, who has already scored twice direct from corners this season. He nearly does it again.

This one is swung in right under the bar but Scott McTominay does brilliantly to leap and head it clear on the goal line at the near post when it was going in.

Aston Villa are playing an aggressive line and are playing better without the ball. They're working hard, working as a team, a structure, a unit. They're trying to condense the pitch, pressing up high and working ever so hard in midfield.

They just need to be a bit better in possession.

Diogo Dalot fizzes a tricky backpass at his United goalkeeper Martin Dubravka, but the 33-year-old shows some good skills to take a touch and clear before Ollie Watkins could charge it down.

    Manchester United 0-0 Aston Villa

The best moment of the game so far by miles. Villa are playing with a high line and being hit with a ball over the top. This time it finds Marcus Rashford, he releases the overlapping Tyrell Malacia down the left and his cross reaches Diogo Dalot.

The Portuguese right-back gets a good connection on at it and heads goalwards but it takes a deflection and goes over the top.

There's been no desire from Aston Villa to try and create something or risk the ball to create something. They've done anything but that so far, they're happy to play sideways or backwards but it's been pretty easy for Manchester United so far.

  9. Villa fans singling out Bruno Fernandespublished at 21 mins

Bruno Fernandes just lashed the ball over the Villa goal in frustration after being flagged offside.

The visiting fans responded with some ironic cheers.

It seems like they have decided Fernandes is public enemy number one tonight.

The ball is in the net but the flag had been raised long before Bruno Fernandes finished. Fred had made a bright run and played through a lovely pass to Marcus Rashford, who crossed for Fernandes but Rashford had moved too early and was offside.

Big opportunity for Scott McTominay to play in Marcus Rashford. He could've gone high or wide and Rashford would've been in behind that high Aston Villa line. It was a sloppy, poor pass from McTominay that just found the feet of the Villa defender.

Nothing too testing for either goalkeeper to do so far. A quarter of an hour of football that will be remembered by absolutely no-one.

Donny van de Beek clatters into Ludwig Augustinsson but the United man gets away with it as referee David Coote gives him a lecture but keeps his cards in his pocket.

Diogo Dalot maintains his ever-present record this season.

The full-back has earned a place in Portugal's World Cup squad today and like his fellow countryman Joao Cancelo at Manchester City, is moving inside and into midfield when Manchester United have the ball.

Erik ten Hag may be looking at full-back reinforcements in January, with Aaron Wan Bissaka still out.

Good play from Marcus Rashford, Tyrell Malacia made that underlapping run on the inside of the Aston Villa full-back. Not one Villa player went with him. It was good defending in the end to make sure United only conceded a corner.

Marcus Rashford forward to Tyrell Malacia but it is excellent defending from ex-United man Ashley Young, as he slides it behind for a corner, which is headed clear by Villa's Ollie Watkins.

John McGinn plays it forward for Aston Villa and Ollie Watkins hopes to get on it but the ball bounces kindly for Martin Dubravka, just inside his penalty area, and is very happy to grab hold of it.

At the other end, Villa goalkeeper Martin Olsen has to sprint across his box and produce a centre-half style sliding challenge to keep it away from Bruno Fernandes and send it away for a corner.

But the corner for United comes to nothing with Tyrell Malacia misjudging a cross and sending it harmlessly behind.

Aston Villa have started with both strikers in Ollie Watkins and Danny Ings right up front but they're not playing narrow, they're playing right between the defenders and really split up.

Manchester United's Diogo Dalot plays a ball forwards for Anthony Martial to chase on to but Calum Chambers is across to cover and just about has enough power put on a header back to goalkeeper Robin Olsen.
