Kai Havertz is a very good guy. We want him to be more mean, we want him to do what he did today. Breaking his neck to get in those positions to score goals, like he did tonight.

He led the line, he was excellent tonight, got a goal and an assist. That was a real bold decision from Graham Potter because Aubameyang is on the bench, a proven goal scorer, he's gone with Havertz and I think that's the way forward for Chelsea.

Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper is backing Jesse Lingard to deliver a big second half of the season, starting with his first return to Manchester United.

Lingard had a poor first half of the season following his surprise free transfer to Forest, but began to show signs of finding some form just before the break.

He registered his first goal and assist in the Carabao Cup win over Tottenham and then added another goal in the victory at Blackburn last week.

The 30-year-old will be desperate to produce as he returns to Old Trafford for the first time following his exit last summer. And Cooper expects him to start having more impact in games.

“You want to see all your players at their best on game days,” Cooper said. “For sure, if Jesse is at his best, he is a player who can have an impact in any game.

“He definitely feels at home here, you can see that. He’s definitely comfortable with the surroundings.

“He’s an excellent trainer. You can see he loves football. You can see he really cares about doing well. Like all of the boys, you’ve got to try to turn that into matchdays, where they can make a difference."

  3. Man Utd looking for a strikerpublished at 19:37 Greenwich Mean Time 27 December 2022

Manchester United v Nottingham Forest (20:00 GMT)

Cody Gapko's move to Liverpool has disappointed many Manchester United fans, who felt the Dutch World Cup star was destined for Old Trafford.

That would have been a hard deal for United to do financially, given they spent more than intended to bolster Erik ten Hag's squad in the summer.

At this stage, unless a deal can be structure in a way that suits United, a more likely striker signing will be as a loan option.

Finding someone at the right level who fits that particular bill will not be easy.

  4. Ten Hag targets 'right' striker for Man Utdpublished at 19:36 Greenwich Mean Time 27 December 2022

Manchester United v Nottingham Forest (20:00 GMT)

Erik ten Hag says Manchester United need to bring in a striker but has emphasised it “has to be the right one” in terms of quality.

United head into their first Premier League match since the World Cup, tonight's home clash against Nottingham Forest, having scored 20 goals in their 14 top-flight fixtures so far this season and with Cristiano Ronaldo having left the club last month.

When boss Ten Hag was asked ahead of the game if he felt United needed to sign a goalscorer in January to give themselves the best possible chance of achieving their aims this term, he said: “First, that can also come out of our club – see (Alejandro) Garnacho, (Anthony) Elanga, (Facundo) Pellistri, who made a good impression at the World Cup (for Uruguay).

“And, yes, we are aware we lost a striker, so I think yes, we have to get a striker in.

“But it has to be the right one, and the right one is the one…he needs to bring the quality in the team, and not just an add to the squad, because that gives you only problems. And. you know, the criteria is high here at Man United.”

  5. Time for United to go on without Ronaldopublished at 19:35 Greenwich Mean Time 27 December 2022

Manchester United v Nottingham Foresr (20:00 GMT)

    Michael Brown
Former Manchester City midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

We've got to understand what a world class talent Cristiano Ronaldo was. Ultimately there was a block between him and the manager and that doesn't come across too well, it seemed to hang over the whole squad.

The legacy is still there, Ronaldo was unbelievable, but now these younger players have to go on and be successful. They have to prove that the manager has made the right decisions.

It'll be a different game tonight against a Forest side who have started to pick up of late. It could be difficult but you would expect United to go on and win this one.

  6. Will Forest move out the relegation zone?published at 19:34 Greenwich Mean Time 27 December 2022

Manchester United v Nottingham Forest (20:00 GMT)

At the bottom, Nottingham Forest will move out of the relegation zone if they get a win today - and would jump up to 15th (14th if they win by a four-goal margin).

Chelsea scorer Kai Havertz to Prime Video: "I know the vision Raheem [Sterling] has. He loves to play these balls. It was a perfect ball and i was happy to score.

"The win and the goals hopefully will give us some confidence. It's an important win. We have to keep on winning. We need the points. We'll give our best in the coming games.

"He [Graham Potter] gives me the freedom to do whatever I feel comfortable on the pitch. I like to play free and to be in the box. He gives me a lot of confidence."

  8. How it standspublished at 19:31 Greenwich Mean Time 27 December 2022

    FT: Chelsea 2-0 Bournemouth

That win for Chelsea takes them level on points with Graham Potter's former side Brighton.

A win tonight for Manchester United against Nottingham Forest in the late game would leave United one point behind fourth-placed Tottenham with a game in hand on them.
