It depends if you are overweight or not. For these guys, they do hold themselves to the highest of standards and maybe Kalvin Phillips, and quite a few others I'm hearing, they did put a bit of weight on.

Not everybody was playing 90 minutes every four days. The training was light and the temperatures were so hot during the day that they they tried to manage the loads. It's not the same situation where on a Saturday-Saturday run in the Premier League you try and build fitness throughout the season and throughout the week.

So it's a case of here's the game and then they have a training session on one day and then they get plenty of down time. For some of those guys, your fitness will drop off a bit. It's not everybody because some people didn't play and they came back fine but it's interesting some people did play and they came back overweight.

There is enough time to be able to get it right. I'm sure Kalvin will be playing for City very soon because I'm sure he is very driven to play and be successful there.

Despite the weather, obvious gulf between these two sides and the general sense that Leeds will do very, very well to get even a draw out of this, the Leeds fans are typically out in force.

The tunnel under the motorway at the end of Lowfields Road was busy with fans picking up programmes and scarves. The Peacock was packed as I walked past and there was a healthy queue of folk getting fish and chips at Graveleys. I'm sure many of those here would have preferred this to have remained a traditional Boxing Day game, rather than it being moved for TV. But when you've not had a game for six weeks, you'll take what you can get, even if it means heading out into a cold, wet, windy west Yorkshire evening.

  3. Pep trusts Rico Lewispublished at 19:03 Greenwich Mean Time 28 December 2022

Kalvin Phillips' appearance on the bench less than a week after Pep Guardiola said the midfielder had returned from England duty at the World Cup overweight is the most eye-catching piece of Manchester City team news.

However, Rico Lewis' full Premier League debut is not far behind.

After the win against Liverpool last Thursday, Guardiola said City's right-back slot was secure for the next 10 years in the form of the 18-year-old.

It is clear Guardiola trusts Lewis - and that is not easily earned.

  4. Team news - Meslier fit, Lewis starts for Citypublished at 19:01 Greenwich Mean Time 28 December 2022

Leeds v Man City (20:00 GMT)

Illan Meslier is fit to start in goal for Leeds having recovered from a bout of glandular fever.

Tyler Adams, who captained the USA at the World Cup, is suspended after his sending off at Tottenham prior to the tournament in Qatar. This means Adam Forshaw starts in midfield. Sam Greenwood also starts and could well form part of a midfield three that Leeds have been using during friendlies in the World Cup break.

Wilfried Gnonto, who impressed in said friendlies, starts, with both Jack Harrison and Crysencio Summerville on the bench.

Leeds XI: Meslier, Kristensen, Struijk, Koch, Cooper, Forshaw, Roca, Greenwood, Gnonto, Rodrigo, Aaronson.

Rico Lewis makes his first Premier League start for Manchester City, with Kyle Walker on the bench, where we also find a number of other stars from the World Cup - Joao Cancelo, Aymeric Laporte, Bernardo Silva and Phil Foden.

It doesn't stop Pep Guardiola naming a strong starting XI, though, including Erling Haaland starts up front in the city of his birth, against the club he supports.

Ex-Leeds midfielder Kalvin Phillips, who Pep Guardiola deemed to have returned from the World Cup overweight, is on the bench.

Defender Ruben Dias has a hamstring injury while Julian Alvarez has been given time off after Argentina's World Cup victory.

Man City XI: Ederson, Lewis, Akanji, Stones, Ake, Rodri, Gundogan, De Bruyne, Grealish, Haaland, Mahrez.

  5. Is 'overweight' Phillips ready to feature?published at 18:59 Greenwich Mean Time 28 December 2022

Former Leeds midfielder Kalvin Phillips was surprisingly left out of Manchester City's team against Liverpool last week.

It turns out Pep Guardiola was not happy about the condition in which he returned from the World Cup, with the Manchester City manager saying the player was "overweight" after his time away with England.

"He is not injured. He arrived overweight," said Guardiola.

"He didn't arrive in the condition for the training sessions and to play. When he is ready, he will play. We need him. We need him a lot."

    So, is Phillips involved tonight?

    Let's find out...

  7. At the bottom...published at 18:54 Greenwich Mean Time 28 December 2022

Leeds v Man City (20:00 GMT)

Wolves are so far the only bottom half side to make a winning return to Premier League action.

It means Leeds remain two points above the relegation places and now have two games in hand on all five teams below them in the table.

A win tonight would take Jesse Marsch's side up to 12th in the standings.

Manchester City start the day third following Newcastle United's Boxing Day win over Leicester City, while Arsenal's victory against West Ham means they have an eight-point lead over Pep Guardiola's reigning champions.

It has been tipping it down with rain all day in Leeds. My walk down from the Dragon pub, along the ginnel that spits you out at the top of Lowfields Road, was an assault course of puddles and other damp pitfalls.

I wouldn't want to hazard a guess at the combined number of layers the press folk around me are sporting this evening. I alone am contributing five to the tally.

Thankfully, the rain has relented a bit and pitch looks like it is holding up OK, thanks to the investment Leeds made in improving their facilities not that long ago. It won't be perfect, though, and the run of the ball is sure to be affected somewhat. It's set up for possible errors, slips and sliding tackles. A more modern take on the kind of games littered through the Damned United - the kind the man pictured via the medium of statue above (Billy Bremner) would have revelled in.

We've had some recent fun in the sun in Qatar - this is what football in December is really all about!

We'll get the team news from Elland Road at 19:00 GMT. Until then, here's what we already know...

Leeds are hopeful that goalkeeper Illan Meslier will be able to maintain his ever-present record this season despite a recent bout of glandular fever.

However, Tyler Adams is suspended for this one after he was sent off against Tottenham before the World Cup break.

Manchester City will be without Ruben Dias for a month due to a hamstring injury, while Kalvin Phillips will not feature due to concerns over his fitness.

Forward Julian Alvarez has been given time off after Argentina's World Cup victory.

With nine games and 30 goals behind us since the Premier League's Boxing Day return, the World Cup almost feels like a distant memory.

Ok, perhaps not quite just yet. It's only been 10 days since the final in Qatar after all...

But it has certainly been an action-packed start to part two of the campaign and we'll only have tomorrow without any English top-flight football before the next round of matches begin.

Before then of course, Manchester City and Leeds United make their league returns on a cold December night at Elland Road.

Who will get off to the perfect start? You're in the right place to find out.
